Chapter 149: Trapped at the Exit

“Someone’s escaping!”

“No one’s doing anything? Hey! Guards? Where the hell are you?”

Similar shouts echoed from both sides of the dungeon—the bitter protests of jealous inmates against the endless injustices of this filthy world!

That’s right! Why should someone get to escape? So unfair!

I nodded in agreement, then waved at them, puffed out my chest, and walked past them with utter righteousness—yep, the world really is too filthy and ugly… but that’s none of my business.

Amid the unwilling roars on either side, we swaggered through the corridor and reached the dungeon gate.

Perhaps they were too confident in the magical defenses below. The path was completely unobstructed, and still no city guards blocked us. The silence was eerily strange.

If Alekxia and Sherly hadn’t made other arrangements, then I feared some other NPCs had meddled in this mission. I just didn’t know their purpose. That was important—it could affect the plot’s direction and our rewards.

Just like when we dealt with Baridros sealed by three swords, our choices led to those rewards. If we had foolishly drawn the swords, Baridros would have crushed us the moment he got out.

This game really was full of traps.

Climbing the steps step by step toward the dungeon exit, sunlight spilled onto my face. A few more steps and I’d be back on the surface.

The dungeon entrance was spacious enough for the big guy Ivan to pass through without any problem.

However, the moment I stepped out, I suddenly shivered and retreated.

“What’s wrong, Yaya?” Yingning asked in surprise.

“We might have taken the wrong exit, or else I’m not awake yet,” I said with a shiver.

“What? How is that possible? This crappy dungeon only has one straight path!” Huo Jinjin exclaimed, then walked up by himself.

Huo Jinjin silently backed down.

“We might have taken the wrong exit, or else I’m not awake yet,” Huo Jinjin said, shivering.

“Stop messing around, how could that be?”

Qingyu silently walked up, then silently retreated, shivering: “Looks like we really did take the wrong way.”

Yingning was about to go up, but I stopped her: “Don’t go up. I’m afraid you’ll start fighting them.”

Because up there was an endless expanse of Sword Sweeping the World members.

If that were all… but what was with the red carpet stretching endlessly from the dungeon gate? And the long, orderly rows of bodyguards on both sides? Were they welcoming some VIP?

But we weren’t VIPs—we were their hostile players! If we walked up there, the joke would be huge! So awkward!

“Come out. We’re here to ensure you complete your mission safely. Don’t be afraid.” Jiangu’s hearty voice came down from above. Somehow, I felt there was a hint of schadenfreude in his tone.

“What exactly is Jiangu up to?” Yingning asked after I explained the situation above.

Yingning was thinking, and so was I.

This man was deep. Though he had suffered repeated defeats, he always maintained a calm and collected demeanor. It was no coincidence that he could be the guild leader of a super-large guild.

“When everyone knows that Gunfire Rose and Sword Sweeping the World have irreconcilable enmity, what hidden meaning is there in their sudden, ostentatious display of goodwill?” Qingyu asked.

“They want to snatch a piece of our pie,” I said.

We knew they meant trouble, but we had no choice but to brace ourselves.

“The mission is in our hands. How can they take a share? Even if they have plans, can’t we just refuse?” Huo Jinjin asked.

“Refuse? That depends on whether Jiangu agrees. This is both a show of goodwill and a show of force. He brought thousands of people, not just to help us with the mission, but also to display his strength. If we don’t accept their goodwill, they’ll immediately switch from helping us complete the mission to ‘killing the boss.’ Then they’ll probably focus fire on us and Ivan,” I continued analyzing.

“And if a large-scale fight breaks out, it will attract the city guards, which is clearly very disadvantageous for us,” Yingning added.

Qingyu had a sudden realization, but Huo Jinjin still didn’t get it: “So what? Even then, what do they gain?”

This time Qingyu explained: “Once we go out, Jiangu will definitely propose a cooperation request, asking us to share first-hand mission information. Under his intimidation, we’ll have no choice but to comply… What a clever scheme!”

“So what do we do?” Huo Jinjin asked again. “With so many of them, is cooperation our only option?”

There was no answer to that for now.

Yingning suddenly asked Ivan: “There are thousands of players near level 3 blocking our way up there. Can you take us directly out of the city?”

Even as she asked, she didn’t hold much hope. Ivan was level 55, with a purple-grade Fán Jīn quality. Escaping from players would be easy enough, but fighting would immediately summon a horde of guards—even a level 150 city lord. That was no match for a level 55 boss.

So, if we wanted to escape, we probably couldn’t count on Ivan.

Besides, even if Ivan could run, and I could run, Selene and the others wouldn’t make it.

“Don’t worry, come out quickly. We mean no harm. I already know about your mission, so don’t delay any longer. If you wait, the city guards will come,” Jiangu’s voice came through a loudspeaker into the dungeon.

“No harm” my ass. Smiling daggers—these were the hardest to deal with.

Everyone was smart enough to know each other’s intentions.

Jiangu knew that the feud between Gunfire Rose and Sword Sweeping the World couldn’t be resolved in a day or two, and he knew we wouldn’t willingly let him take advantage. So he resorted to psychological warfare.

“Come out quickly. Do you think all the trouble you caused on your way here was just luck? You managed to complete the mission smoothly so far—don’t you owe us thanks? Without us, you would have been surrounded by city guards long ago… Escaping? That’s no small matter!”

Jiangu’s words struck a chord of frustration, shaking our resolve. So even if we didn’t owe him a favor, we had unknowingly received one? If we refused Jiangu’s goodwill now, wouldn’t we be branded as ingrates?

“Don’t believe him. He couldn’t have offered help without contacting us first to test the waters. That kind of opportunistic bastard only learned about our mission through some channel. Otherwise, he would never have let us rescue Ivan,” I said, dispelling everyone’s doubts.

“So what do we do? It seems we have no choice…” Huo Jinjin sighed.

“No, that’s not true.”
