Chapter 189: The Unexpected Ace

However, this matter finally showed a glimmer of hope. Although it was somewhat troublesome, having a direction was far better than being completely helpless.

Apart from that elven elder, there was no other valuable information. I quickly regrouped with Yingning and the others.

Turret Fairy and the rest were dejected, clearly having found nothing of value.

“Nothing at all?” Yingning asked.

“Nothing except that Aksiya is about to be sentenced to death…” Turret Fairy said.

Huo Jinjin and Qingyu also nodded, indicating their intel was identical to Turret Fairy’s.

“Break her out? How could we possibly succeed… Even if Aksiya and Sherli help, it’d be a 2v5 fight. We can’t win, and we’d be wanted by the Alliance… Might as well delete our accounts…” Huo Jinjin sighed, slumping back in his wheelchair.

“I actually have some clues,” I said with a smile, sharing what I’d learned from the elven elder.

“That means,” I explained, “Aksiya isn’t in immediate danger. Until the court reaches a verdict, not even the Alliance can touch her. Not just five Saint-level fighters—even a hundred Saint-levels have no authority to bypass the Alliance Tribunal and arbitrarily convict Aksiya.”

“At the very least, that buys us some breathing room,” Turret Fairy sighed in relief. “We have something we can work on, a clear direction.”

“But what use is that? We’re not detectives or lawyers, we’ve never investigated cases before. Sure, there might be a chance to turn things around, but we don’t have the ability to do it! A trial sounds simple, but do you even know where to start? How to find evidence? It’s too late to learn now!” Huo Jinjin looked up in despair. “If only I were Sherlock Holmes—even if I had to engage in bromance with Watson, it’d be better than being this clueless…”

After he spoke, the air suddenly grew still.

The silence stretched on. Startled, he turned and saw Qingyu and Turret Fairy staring at Yingning.

“What are you gawking at? Even if you scare the boss, she won’t turn into Sherlock Holmes! Or Conan Edogawa! Rather than that, we should think about hiring a private detective. I remember seeing lots of ads in public restrooms… but I wonder if they handle anything beyond catching cheating spouses… Hey, are you guys crazy? Do you know how creepy your stares are? You’re gonna scare the boss!”

Turret Fairy and Qingyu ignored Huo Jinjin’s chatter, still wide-eyed at Yingning.

“We also need a legal advisor to cram us, a bunch of legal illiterates, on trial procedures… I said, will you stop staring at the boss? You’re making me feel like I’ve forgotten something again. I’m not that dumb!” Huo Jinjin pouted in displeasure.

“Second Fool Gold, you really are dumb. Remember when we casually revealed our professions?”

“Of course I do! You’re the dumb one! It was only a few days ago, how could I forget!”

“Then do you recall what our guild leader said her profession was?” Turret Fairy asked again.

“Student! What, isn’t the guild leader that legendary Japanese high schooler who saves the world with one punch…”

“Then do you remember what she said her *specific* profession was…” Turret Fairy murmured, her eyes gradually shining with anticipation.

“…Holy crap! Am I the last to catch on again?” Huo Jinjin slapped his forehead, mouth agape, murmuring dazedly, “It was the best law school in the world, the Kyoto Royal Institute of Law…”

“Wrong,” I corrected with a smile. “She’s the top student at the Kyoto Royal Institute of Law, and the national law exam’s first-place winner for three consecutive years.”

“…An academic prodigy,” Turret Fairy sighed.

“…An academic prodigy,” Qingyu shook his head.

“I’ll just go read *A Brief History of Time*…” Huo Jinjin silently pulled out the book.

“The courtroom is like a battlefield. I’ve never been in actual combat; the techniques I’ve learned from books may not apply in practice. Don’t pin your hopes on me. My role is extremely limited. I can only help you understand the court process—the final outcome still depends on evidence and reasoning.”

Yingning wasn’t optimistic. Some things can’t be handled even with full effort; exams are one thing, actual combat is another.

For the first time in her life, she felt that what she’d persisted in wasn’t entirely useless. This first real battle would hinge on a life.

“Don’t be nervous. We’ll do what we can,” I comforted.

Yingning looked up, meeting my gaze, and finally nodded firmly.

I wondered if the little girl could handle it. I was ready to step in at the critical moment. After all, the outcome was still uncertain.

Because of this sudden turn of events, we decided not to stay until the end of the carnival but to leave early.

First, Yingning and I found Yang Ye, expressing our wish to exchange our points for items and then depart early.

“Leaving already? The closing ceremony is really exciting!”

“Can’t be helped. Something came up in the game that we have to deal with. We need to head back and prepare early,” I said helplessly.

“In the game, huh… Then I can’t help with that. I don’t play much; I’m just a low-level noob in *The Pursuit*, only around level thirty. Anyway, I can call the host over to exchange your points for items.”

To exchange items, we needed the host, and since we couldn’t find him, we came to Yang Ye.

The host soon arrived in our private room and displayed the exchange list.

There were nutritional pet foods that could replace milk, increasing both satiety and pet experience, with quality ranging from white to gold.

There were also evolution items and some low-quality pet equipment.

Most of the list consisted of pet eggs. The best was the A-grade egg [Mosquito], costing 2000 points, but we didn’t need pet eggs.

Scrolling down, the highest-cost item was [B-Pure Crystal], and only the water-type B-Pure Crystal—Siren’s Hymn—was available, requiring a whopping 5000 points.

No hesitation; I reluctantly exchanged for one. Even if I couldn’t use it, my daughter could, though that was far in the future.

Then I exchanged a skill book for [Soul Link], effect: Allows a pet to share the experience it gains with its offspring across space.

I also exchanged a skill book for [Mirror Mom], effect: Allows a pet to leave a remotely controllable mirror image in the pet space. The mirror image can take care of the young and provide milk.

We used the remaining points to buy gold-quality young pet food and evolution items. The evolution items could only upgrade from C to B rank, but we bought a lot anyway, since they’d be in high demand in a couple days. Even if we didn’t need them, we could resell them for a good profit.

After spending all our battle points, we formally bid Yang Ye farewell and left the carnival.

“Focus on finding witnesses and physical evidence. But since it’s an SSS-rank mission, chances are we can’t win just through the court. Even if we could, it won’t be easy… Anyway, let’s give our all in the court trial, while staying ready to fight!”

“Fight?”

“Yeah, a 5v5 battle. The five of us against five Saint-levels!”

“A super 5v5 elite match even more thrilling than the fight against Sword Sweeping the World! Live broadcast worldwide!”
