Chapter 169: The Moon’s Trial and Error

[What an absolutely adorable bunch of little ones… Congratulations!] Xue Li chuckled.

“Attributes…”

[Don’t worry about attributes. As your tails unseal one by one, you’ll naturally understand. Rest assured, you haven’t turned green.]

“Oh…”

[I have things to do. I’m off. See you later.]

With that, Xue Li hung up before I could reply.

Yingning and the others had already begun their trials of the gods. I was the only one left behind.

But I didn’t want to abandon the little ones here.

How could anyone leave their newborn children behind?

Helpless, I carefully transferred the little ones from one bamboo basket to another, then strapped it onto my back.

I left the pet space to test—confirming that even in combat, I could teleport them back at any time—before returning to Minos City. Because of the recent incident, the city had opened its teleportation array.

Of course, I made sure to keep the little ones warm. These fox cubs, no bigger than mice, were covered only in a thin layer of fuzz. It felt nice to the touch, but it wasn’t nearly enough to withstand the bitter cold of the North.

The little ones were lively, lying in the bamboo basket and peering curiously through the gaps.

I left Minos City and continued onward, heading toward an even colder destination.

I really couldn’t understand why the Moon Goddess had chosen such a godforsaken place for her trial. It was as if she didn’t want anyone to claim her divine artifact—leaving it all to fate.

The other gods were just as bad. They acted like reclusive masters from martial arts novels, passing on their power based on luck rather than skill.

From Minos City, it took half a day to reach the destination. I trudged through the snow for that long. By the time I was almost there, Yingning and the others had logged off again.

Yingning had completed half of her trial. After logging off, she did nothing else but keep a video call with me. She positioned the camera to face the bamboo basket on my back.

She just rested her chin on her hand, chuckling softly as she watched the little ones play in the basket.

[Xiaoya, don’t you have any ideas for their names?]

“Go discuss it with your brother. But… don’t you dare decide on your own!!!”

Yingning’s naming sense was terrifying!

She seemed a bit dejected, pouting without a word.

Luckily, nothing else happened. I continued forward and finally reached the coordinates written on the note.

But as I looked around, there was only endless white snow—not a single prominent building in sight!

What was going on? Buried under the snow again?

[Try digging.] Yingning said.

“Alright, no other choice…”

I pulled out a shovel and started digging.

Human Royal City, Saint Cruz Northwest, Stellar Launch Base.

“The moon will launch in ten minutes. The launch process will last about ten seconds. During those ten seconds, do not, under any circumstances, mobilize any lunar energy!” Nixian, the Saint-rank Grand Mage of the Alliance stationed at the Human Royal City, warned with extreme gravity.

At the same time, he issued an Alliance announcement through the amplification device.

[Jiuhua Alliance Announcement: The backup moon is preparing to launch. Please immediately cease any actions related to Light magic. Wait quietly for the moon to safely ascend. Until the next announcement, all Light magic activities are prohibited! This includes, but is not limited to, alchemy, summoning, rituals… Violators will be executed immediately, or have their magic license permanently revoked!]

With that, Nixian waved his staff, his robe fluttering.

“Her Majesty the Moon Goddess is in position. Open the moon launch silo and begin the launch countdown!”

The massive silo cover slowly opened. Nixian nodded to the Moon Goddess in the lunar module cockpit.

At the same time, he broke into a cold sweat—the entire Alliance had barely managed to soothe this emotionally fragile goddess. If anything went wrong now, this willful and delicate deity might just impulsively destroy the world in a fit of rage…

He’d heard that when she lost her temper, even the legendary God-King couldn’t calm her down.

Heaven help them! The launch had to go smoothly!

****

Oh! The moon was finally launching?

I dug through the snow, relieved—once that moon was launched, the Moon Goddess’s anger would gradually subside, right? And if the culprit was never found, the matter would eventually be dropped, and I’d escape unscathed.

Thank the heavens. I really didn’t want to be hunted by a high-level NPC!

I kept digging. I’d been at it for nearly ten minutes, burrowing several meters deep, but still nothing.

Could this trial site be fake?

No way. A Saint-rank NPC’s quest reward wouldn’t lie.

I continued digging.

Clang—

The sound of metal striking stone jolted my spirits!

Was it stone? No. My shovel had cleared the snow, revealing a milky-white crystalline object. It wouldn’t budge, probably the corner of some massive structure.

Rumble—

The sudden earthquake eased my mind. It seemed I hadn’t found the wrong place.

As I guessed, the crystalline corner slowly rose on its own, higher and higher.

Soon, its full form was revealed before me.

I suppressed my excitement, silently marveling at the gods’ grand scale!

A milky-white crystal palace stood under the sunlight, towering over the endless snowy plain!

The palace was as vast as the Pentagon, styled like a Greek temple. It resembled the Parthenon from the real world, but pristine and new, without any of the Parthenon’s decay!

[System Notification: You have discovered the Moon Goddess’s Ruins.]

[Welcome to my temple, fortunate adventurer. Step forward and activate the Moon Well.]

A female voice rang out, majestic yet kind, merciful, and all-embracing— like that of a saintly mother.

I looked around but saw no one. Only that single line was spoken, so I guessed it was just a residual voice left by the deity through some means.

[Welcome to my temple, fortunate adventurer. Step forward and activate the Moon Well.]

The words repeated. I was right.

But hadn’t the announcement prohibited magic actions for now? Would activating the Moon Well count?

[Don’t be afraid, adventurer. The light of life shines upon all beings…]

[Since you delayed in activating the Moon Well, it has been activated automatically. Please wait…]

Hum—

The air trembled. A beam of white light shot up from the center of the temple!

But strangely, the white light stopped abruptly when it reached the sky, as if it had lost its target. It circled a few times, searching for something…

[Positioning error. No moon at target point. Automatically re-searching… Search successful! Position corrected! Continuing!]

Saint Cruz Northwest, Stellar Launch Base.

“All preparations complete! Beginning final launch countdown!”

“Ten!”

“Nine!”

“Eight!”

“Seven!”

“Six!”

“Five!”

“Four!”

“Three!”

“Two!”

“One!”

“Ignition!”

It was finally launched… Nixian breathed a sigh of relief. Finally, this divine ancestor was off their hands…

“Liftoff successful! Approaching dimensional orbit!”

“The moon will enter multi-dimensional orbit and resume normal operation in ten seconds!”

“Wait… unknown energy approaching!”

“Warning! Unknown energy approaching! Target moving at extreme speed!”

“Energy level assessment in progress—Assessment complete! At least divine level, enough to destroy the moon!!!”

“Immediately abort the launch! SSS-level alert! Immediately abort the launch!”

Too late.

It was over.

Staring at the rapidly approaching milky-white light, Nixian nearly burst into tears.

Boom—

The citizens of the Yade’er Continent stared blankly at the sky.

“The fireworks show this year is really top-notch…”
