Chapter 168: The Hatching of the Fox Cubs

Because I had fallen asleep, I had no idea what miracles had occurred during those sixteen hours.

Now, the eggshell was slightly translucent like a milky crystal, the little tail pattern on it shimmering with a faint white light.

Night had just ended; it was sunrise. Half a great sun was reflected on the sea.

Through the perfectly beautiful crystal eggshell, I could see the fox cubs curled up inside. Their fur was damp, making them look a bit disheveled. But as I looked at them, they too stared back at me with wide, curious eyes.

I thought our first communication would happen after they hatched, but unexpectedly, even before they left their cradle, they had already made contact with my soul through their eyes.

They were my children. It was a call from the blood, so real that it left me at a loss.

I held the egg high, feeling my eyes dry and sore.

“This is the forest!”

I turned them to face the forest, but my hands and tail trembled. The forest in their eyes probably looked like a pixelated mess, not beautiful at all.

“The forest has trees, flowers, and barbecue! Whatever you want to eat, I’ll grill it for you!”

I turned them toward the sea.

“This is the sea!”

The sea has water, fish—edible fish and inedible fish—mammals, reptiles, coelenterates, arthropods, mollusks, invertebrates, plants, which can be divided into edible and inedible. Ask me before you eat!”

I lifted them toward the sky.

“This is the sky!

The sky has the sun, stars, clouds. There used to be a moon, but Third Sister seemed not to like it, so she blew it up…”

The system had flooded me with such intense excitement that I didn’t even know what I was doing.

Crack—

The faint, crisp sound instantly made me stop all my nonsense.

My body tensed. I carefully cradled them with my hands and tail.

Crack—

This sound was even clearer than the last.

I searched carefully and finally found a crack on the eggshell of my eldest daughter.

All three little ones struggled desperately, trying to push open the eggshell’s confinement. I watched from the side, my heart aching and anxious, as if a hateful cat was clawing at it. I suppressed my urge to help them crack the shell.

If they can’t get out, will they suffocate? What if the default setting requires someone else to help them hatch? Even if I help them, it’s fine, right?

Crack—

The crack on the eldest daughter’s egg had encircled the entire shell. She seemed to shrink her body as if exhausted, making me even more anxious.

Crack—

Turns out she wasn’t exhausted, but gathering strength.

The little one, not yet half a palm in size and less than ten centimeters in diameter, suddenly stretched her body, and the eggshell cracked open!

She had finally overcome the first obstacle in her life. I quickly wrapped her in my tail, afraid she might catch cold.

Crack—

Next was the second daughter. After pushing the shell into two halves, she seemed tired. With half the shell on her head, she sat panting inside, too lazy to move.

Crack—

Finally, the third daughter.

Perhaps because she had blown up the moon and had such a thrilling experience, the third daughter seemed much more lively than the first two.

With a burst of energy, she pushed open the shell—and actually sent it flying!

Bathed in the morning wind and blazing sun, the little ones, smaller than mice, quickly dried their fur and regained their energy. Chirping, they crawled all over my body… finally reaching my chest.

Well, this moment had finally come.

I lay flat on the ground, letting them treat me like a mountain, climbing and exploring randomly.

My mind was strangely calm.

The three little ones still had no names, and I hadn’t given them any. I wanted to discuss it properly with Yingning offline when I had time.

For now, I’d just call them Eldest, Second, and Third. I’ll change them when they get names.

[Eldest Daughter – Unnamed]

[Attributes: Ice, Fairy]

[Contractor: Ning Beibei]

[Bloodline: MC Mary Sue’s Dreamy Snow Elegy]

I thought the panel data of my three daughters wouldn’t differ much, but as I looked, when I saw the attributes column, I got a shock!

[Second Daughter – Unnamed]

[Quality: C-Rank (Growth Potential)]

[Level: 1]

[Attributes: Electric, Fairy]

[Third Daughter – Unnamed]

[Quality: C-Rank (Growth Potential)]

[Level: 1]

[Attributes: Psychic, Fairy]

Seeing the second and third daughters’ attributes, I instantly felt a green tinge on my head.

Ice and Fairy I could understand—those were my attributes… But what was with the second daughter’s Electric and the third’s Psychic?!

Where did those attributes come from!

I wanted to ask Shermi, but I couldn’t reach her. Helpless, I had to bottle up the question for now.

Probably it was the effect of the Zimu River water, or maybe the effect of those unlocked tails of mine. Whatever, it didn’t matter.

I opened a video call with Yingning and helplessly showed her my current situation.

The three little ones had drunk their fill and were now wobbling and crawling all over me.

The three were basically identical—they were all foxes—but the eldest had one tuft of hair on her head, the second had two, and the third had three, so I could tell them apart.

But I wondered: if every evolution required drinking Zimu River water, and the distinction method still relied on hair tufts, then eventually my daughters would probably end up with mohawks…

That was terrifying.

[You’ve worked hard, Xiaoya. Really, really worked hard…]

Yingning’s gaze toward the little ones was full of affection. When she looked at me, it was mixed with apologetic pity.

I lay quietly, letting the little ones eat their fill, play until they were tired, burrow into my long hair, curl up between my neck and shoulders, snuggle against me, and fall into a deep sleep.

When they were sound asleep, I took out a bamboo basket nest I had prepared earlier and gently placed the little ones into the soft, warm nest.

Finally, I carried the basket to a small hut in the nearby bamboo forest—one I had bought yesterday. A magical compression hut that could compress a whole house to a few centimeters, and when used, thrown out to build it.

Finally, I could breathe. I felt as tired as if I had soloed a spider nest again.

I connected to Shermi’s communication and shrugged. “What can I do? It’s what my master likes.”

[You damn tsundere! You’re obviously enjoying it too!] Shermi said disdainfully.

“What? I like it? How is that possible! I’m a cold-blooded, merciless, murderous thug!”

I bared my teeth and tried my best to look fierce.

“Growl—”

Hearing that sound, I instantly shuddered and quickly looked at the nest. It was just the third daughter dreaming. My body relaxed.

I turned around and met Shermi’s teasing gaze.
