Join the ServerWe were not frightened by Shermi’s arrival, but by the reactions of Aksiya and Sherli.
Why were two Saint-level beings, both above level 180, acting as if they were facing a formidable enemy when confronting Shermi, the city lord who was supposedly only level 150?
And how did Shermi have the courage to follow us through the space tunnel to face Aksiya and Sherli?
These NPCs were not stupid. The stronger the NPC, the more cunning they were. Shermi was certainly no fool. So why would he make such a suicidal move?
It meant he had confidence. Confidence to face two level 180 Saint-level beings. Either he had already advanced to Saint-level himself, or he had a special means of escape.
But judging by the stern expressions on Aksiya and Sherli’s faces, the former possibility was more likely!
Sherli waved her staff and teleported us behind her, placing herself between us and Shermi.
Despite her unpleasant personality, she was still loyal to her friends. She wasn’t the type of Saint-level who would discard someone after using them.
“Long time no see, esteemed Saint-level lords.”
The light flickered, and Ivan’s massive body vanished into thin air. In his place stood a human male who looked completely normal, dressed in a luxurious magic robe adorned with gems, appearing to be about twenty-five years old.
“No need for formalities, Shermi. When did you advance to Saint-level? Concealing your strength and even deceiving the Alliance—that is a grave crime!” Aksiya struck first.
“Since you bring up the Alliance, I have a question for you.” Shermi’s narrow eyes glittered with cold light. “Attempting to break into an Alliance super-S-grade border city prison to rescue the remnants of the Stars—what crime is that? How about we go to the Alliance Tribunal and let the gods judge? You know their stance on the remnants of the Stars.”
Aksiya and Sherli fell silent. It seemed Shermi’s words had struck a nerve, making them cautious.
The reason they had sent us to break into the prison was precisely because they feared the Alliance and were afraid of being discovered. They just hadn’t expected the matter to be exposed.
Seeing their silence, Shermi smiled and continued, “I’ve already reported this to the Alliance Tribunal. Let’s meet there.”
With that, Shermi, like a proud rooster, held his head high and turned to open a teleportation portal, preparing to leave with the air of a victor.
No one but me noticed that as Shermi opened the portal, Sherli subtly curled her finger… That cat was indeed up to no good!
“Sherli, you might as well stop your little tricks.” Just before stepping into the portal, Shermi suddenly turned around and said with a smile.
“Hmph.” Sherli let out a reluctant snort.
Shermi stepped into the portal and left.
So, was this mission considered a success or a failure? And what about the rewards?
As soon as Shermi was gone, Sherli’s lips curled into a sly smile. “Idiot, I was just bluffing about tampering with the portal. You’re still as clueless as ever… Did you really think that becoming a Saint-level made you invincible? You’re still too young!”
As she spoke, a small goblin-shaped statue appeared in Sherli’s hand. She slammed it heavily onto the ground.
With a bang, Ivan appeared, unconscious. His massive body immediately filled the small room, smashing a table and chairs.
“You didn’t rescue the wrong person,” Aksiya said, dropping her defensive stance and letting out a sigh of relief. “Shermi swapped places during the chaos after you left the dungeon. He transformed himself into Ivan and sealed the real Ivan away. The switch took less than 0.01 seconds, and with everyone’s strength, it was impossible to detect. It’s not your fault.”
“It seems Shermi was well-prepared. He anticipated someone would come for Ivan… What is he planning?” Sherli frowned.
“Let’s ask him later…” Aksiya pointed at Ivan.
“Ivan” suddenly spoke, casting a contemptuous glance at Sherli. “Why would two Saint-level beings be afraid of him? I’m not doubting Lady Aksiya’s strength, but I wonder if a certain priest was holding you back…”
Upon hearing this, Sherli’s fur stood on end. “Which dead fox are you calling useless? Are you tired of living?”
I looked at the sky with an irritatingly cheeky expression and muttered, “Some stupid cat shouldn’t take the bait…”
“Hey, you dead fox, say that again if you dare!” Sherli was so furious she raised her staff as if to smack my face.
Completely disregarding the danger to my life, I sneered, “Look at the twenty-eight layers of buff on my status bar. Do you think I dare?”
“…”
“Pfft…”
Hearing my words, Sherli froze for a moment, her killing intent vanishing instantly. Her face contorted as she tried to suppress a laugh, but in the end, she failed. She collapsed to the ground, letting out an earth-shattering howl of laughter: “Hahahaha… What kind of fox are you? We’re arguing! Don’t make me laugh!”
Like I’m trying to make you laugh… I helplessly pressed my forehead. Thinking of the number twenty-eight, I inexplicably felt drained and could no longer muster the energy to mock Sherli.
“We were indeed wary of him,” Aksiya said softly with a slight smile. “Not because of Sherli, and not because he advanced to Saint-level. It was because he carried a strange aura that made us feel uncomfortable, even somewhat afraid… We weren’t wary of Shermi himself, but of that aura.”
“What aura?” I pressed.
Missions wouldn’t fall from the sky, nor would mission rewards inexplicably increase. Everything I did now was to trigger those hidden mission elements.
I absolutely couldn’t be stingy with questions, because the more I knew, the more possibilities I would grasp.
“You don’t need to know that for now. Knowing too much may not be a good thing… Let me first tell you why you had to rescue him.” Aksiya pointed at Ivan.
We nodded and listened attentively.
“Have you ever thought about what the demonic creations are meant to counter?”
Aksiya’s question startled us. Then, another horrifying thought emerged in our minds, opening a new door to information.
If our guess was correct, then this might be the biggest secret on the continent of Yadel that the officials had never mentioned!
A secret that no player other than us knew!
“The demonic creations are biological weapons from the extradimensional demons, but those weapons pose almost no threat to the three races of the Alliance… Take the mountain guardian Andun, for example. Because of his enormous size, he couldn’t dodge any magic skills. With no defense on his back, a small mid-level mage team standing on his back could easily wear him down. So what was the point of his existence?” Aksiya said.
Aksiya’s words confirmed our guess, and at the same time, a chill ran down our spines!
Aksiya didn’t continue. Even she seemed extremely wary of this matter, unwilling to speak of it or even speculate: “Some things we’re not sure about. The hidden truth is too terrifying. But there’s no denying that if our speculation is correct, then perhaps we are already the last line of defense for the continent of Yadel…”

“Adventurers, we might be summoned to the Alliance Tribunal soon. While we’re away, you need to improve your strength…” Aksiya said solemnly.
