Chapter 195: Four-Stage Frenzy and the Lost Patrol

As impressive as the skills were, this wasn’t the time to use them. Before leaving, I could try using one in this otherworldly space to see if anything came of it.

First, I finished clearing the materials and, as usual, left the looting to myself. This time, I didn’t find any quest items like Ale and Sherry’s surveillance mirrors.

What I did find were the other three parts of the Resurrection spell: the Resurrection Leg, Resurrection Arm, and Resurrection Head. One more Resurrection Torso, and I could revive a gender-neutral target.

I also pulled out an intermediate-level Lightning Mage skill book—[Tesla’s Magnetic Storm]. Its market price hovered around eight thousand gold coins.

These were the standard drops. Next came the Frenzy bonus drops, seven items in total.

One intermediate Assassin skill book—[Dark Affinity], which extends stealth duration. Market price ranged from twenty to thirty thousand gold coins, but unfortunately, Qingyu was a beastkin Assassin and couldn’t use human skill books; he would need a Spirit Sealing Urn instead.

A purple-quality treasure map that could yield pet skill books, gold coins, equipment, antiques, or other decent rewards—random, of course. Opening it revealed coordinates somewhere in the northern regions of the Yad Continent. If you trusted your luck, you could take a gamble. If not, you could sell it on the auction house. Purple treasure maps went for two thousand gold each—a hefty bet.

A Resurrection Torso Spirit Sealing Urn. Now I only needed two more Resurrection spells for the unspeakable parts.

There were three other skill books of decent value, but we couldn’t use them, so I won’t mention them.

One item caught our attention—a bonus drop from the third boss’s fourth-stage Frenzy.

This was the first time I’d heard of a fourth-stage Frenzy. Maybe others had triggered it, but no information had surfaced on the forums.

[Monster Illustration Fragment – ??? – I]

[Collect all three fragments (I-II-III) to unlock the monster’s illustration. Reward: one monster card. The card contains a random power from the monster, allowing you to unleash one of its random skills.]

Another gamble, but given its rarity from a fourth-stage Frenzy, it couldn’t be weak.

We cleaned up the battlefield without needing to divvy up the loot—Yingning and I didn’t bother with that; we barely distinguished what was mine or hers.

Without wasting time, we hurried in the direction those people had gone. It had been two hours since we entered this otherworldly space.

We had to race against the clock—Ale was still waiting for us!

Our haul so far was already quite丰厚. Apparently, by pure chance, the world main quest triggered through Pitting Badirus intersected delightfully with the main quest we’d gotten from the Hell-difficulty Spider Nest.

We triggered the Starfall quest line thanks to Ale and Sherry’s surveillance mirrors and antenna devices. And now, similar devices had dropped here—meaning the connection between these two quest lines was no ordinary coincidence!

By sheer luck, we might have actually found the breakthrough point!

The alliance’s markers were written in a special cipher, which we couldn’t understand. But that didn’t matter… we had Baidu!

With Baidu open, we fumbled around and finally found the group.

They were hiding in a cave resembling the Water Curtain Cave, except the waterfall here wasn’t water—it was fire.

Getting in wasn’t too hard. Just protect your hair and fur, grit your teeth, and charge through. The fire damage was low.

Since the game had so many fire mages, fights often left your tail singed. Fireproof cream was a must for all beastkin. Of course, I had a full grid of it, applying it as soon as I logged in.

My equipment wouldn’t catch fire, so I slathered another few layers on my hair, ears, and tail before charging in.

Yingning had fewer worries. Human players’ hair fibers were different from beastkin—naturally fire-resistant. So she charged in too.

[“They can’t possibly come back…”]

[Ah, but seeing them at least means the alliance is still sending teams here. Maybe… we haven’t been forgotten by the alliance…]

It was the boss’s voice.

[Who’s there!] The boss suddenly stood up.

I looked around. The cave was surprisingly well-equipped. I could see portable furniture from the Yad Continent, even wrappers from compressed snacks.

The five of them stared in shock as we emerged through the curtain of fire.

[You… won?]

[You defeated two king-rank leaders?]

[That’s impossible for anyone below sixth rank! You must have brought an army! Great! Where are they? Has the alliance come to take us home?] A tall, thin mage also stood up excitedly.

Facing their overjoyed and desperately expectant gazes, I could only sigh. “Sorry, it’s just us two. And we were sent by two Saint Lords to save the Yad Continent. I didn’t know you were here until now.”

[What?! How is that possible? How could the alliance abandon us! We’ve risked our lives for the alliance, sold our lives for half a lifetime! Look, look! Every single one of us is laden with merits!] As he spoke, the tall thin mage ripped open his robe.

[This is the Medal of Queen Vissalia… This is the First-Class Exploration Team Medal… This is the Honorary Cross…]

I glanced at his glimmering lapel and looked away. “When you were being besieged, did they save your lives?”

He fell silent.

Though these medals and honors were the sole reason he’d endured this mad world all these years without taking his own life, my words still chilled him to the bone.

[It… can’t be helped, right… The teleportation gate restricts those below sixth rank… And we never made it back… Proving it’s too dangerous here…]

[Maybe for the sake of other comrades’ lives…] the man murmured, tears streaming down his face.

He had thought he possessed an iron will, that he could sacrifice his name for glory—the faith that had kept him alive until now.

But when he realized he was a discarded pawn, he discovered how fragile his will truly was. What had kept him going all along wasn’t willpower at all, but an obsession driven to the point of madness.

He had to dress up that faith as glory because comrades had died exploring the exit. Glory was the only anesthetic that spared him from guilt.

Twenty years ago, he would have passionately retorted, pointing at my nose and cursing—yes, glory can’t directly save your life, but it can sustain you so you don’t give up, so you live for the mission. Glory is a soldier’s life!

But after twenty years, even an iron will had been ground to dust by the endless flames, longing for home, and the ceaseless suspicion of being abandoned.

I reached out and gently lifted the iron tag on his chest. “Alliance Otherworld Exploration Team, Nineteenth Squad—Omicron—Number Five.”

He didn’t resist—whether out of chivalry toward a woman or because of his shattered spirit.

Suddenly, I raised my voice to a deafening volume and shouted at Omicron. “The alliance thanks you for your loyalty! But remember, as a soldier, you serve not the alliance! Not glory! But the verdant Yad Continent that gave you birth and raised you! And the family and loved ones who await your return, who yearn for your success!”

“Now the Yad Continent faces annihilation! They have already destroyed the border fortress of Minos City! The border has fallen; the interior is in peril! I need you to tell me everything you’ve discovered in your surveys! To confirm that Minos’s destruction was caused by these scumbags! Then, you will not only be heroes of the alliance—the alliance will commit all its forces to attack this place, allowing you to return home with true glory, as saviors of the continent!”

“Whether we can make it back or not, I have a way to transmit the intelligence. At this moment, our lives are bound together! The only path to survival is to urge the alliance to mobilize! So now… tell me everything you know!”
