“What happened?”
Initially, I had thought the mysterious atmosphere might hint at a large-scale meeting. To my surprise, the room held only a young woman with sky-blue hair.
“Our leader just took office, didn’t they? The organization’s structure is still unclear. Yet, it turns out we have someone here. If I’m not mistaken, you must be the contact for this area.”
As she spoke, Lan Baiyuan smiled, gesturing towards the sofa beside her, inviting Mu Rong Xin Xue to sit.
Mu Rong Xin Xue observed the emblem pinned to Lan Baiyuan’s chest. It featured a black background, with a striking lightning bolt design at its center. Four red characters, “CXZG,” along with other intricate details, completed the badge.
Seeing that distinctive emblem, she could confirm that Lan Baiyuan was indeed a member of the organization.
With that assurance, any lingering hostility or wariness Mu Rong Xin Xue held dissipated.
“It truly took considerable effort to discover we had someone here, and to locate you.”
Lan Baiyuan sighed deeply, appearing as though she had genuinely expended great energy. In truth, a simple inquiry with the organization’s human resources department would reveal whether anyone had been dispatched to this location.
Before her own transfer, Lan Baiyuan had already conducted such a search, so discovering Mu Rong Xin Xue’s presence required no effort at all. Her visit today was merely a matter of convenience; she happened to have some spare time and wished to meet Mu Rong Xin Xue.
“Then, might there be a task you wish to entrust to me?”
Seeing that Lan Baiyuan remained silent, Mu Rong Xin Xue decided to initiate the inquiry herself. ‘Logically, based on Lan Baiyuan’s words, she claimed to have gone to great lengths to find her.’
‘To have found her, brought her here, and acted with such secrecy, it must surely be about a mission.’
‘Could it be…?’
‘No, it couldn’t be that. No matter what, if the mission truly involved, even in the slightest, something harmful, she would absolutely refuse.’
‘Gazing into Lan Baiyuan’s eyes, Mu Rong Xin Xue nervously clutched the hem of her skirt. This was truly the first time a mission had ever made her feel such apprehension.’
Observing her demeanor, Lan Baiyuan suddenly let out a soft chuckle. “Honestly, there’s no need to be so tense.”
“It’s not really a ‘mission’ per se. I merely needed someone to lend a hand.”
“Is that so?” Mu Rong Xin Xue instinctively exhaled in relief.
However, as Lan Baiyuan was about to speak again, Mu Rong Xin Xue found herself holding her breath once more.
“Really, there’s no need for such tension. The mission is quite simple: the MRZZ people have arrived. The leader’s instruction is for us to locate them, ascertain their purpose, and then the leader will personally handle their elimination.”
“The leader, he’s come to Qingshan City?”
Mu Rong Xin Xue unconsciously relaxed. It was just as Huang Beifeng had said; nothing major, and certainly not a difficult task. For someone adept in reconnaissance, this was hardly a challenge.
Yet, more than the mission itself, she was concerned by the leader’s presence here. Hadn’t he been lurking elsewhere all this time? His sudden, long-term stationing in Qingshan City surely had a significant reason behind it.
“Indeed. It’s likely this mission concerns someone extremely important to the leader.”
“Someone important?”
She pondered carefully for a moment. Her knowledge of the enigmatic leader was limited. The only thing she knew was that, judging by appearance, he might be a year or two younger than Mu Rong Luo Ye, but to truly assess him by age would be a grave mistake.
She understood that the leader could not be viewed through ordinary human eyes. Yet, how could someone utterly devoid of emotion possess a person of such profound importance to him?
Regardless of the truth, it was beyond her purview. Her immediate focus was to communicate effectively with Lan Baiyuan and determine their next steps.
“The leader’s mission is to find those individuals. Do you have any leads so far?”
“The leads are sparse. We know they are active within Qingshan City, but their movements are infrequent. Specifically, their last known whereabouts were in the west of the city.”
Listening to her words, Mu Rong Xin Xue mused for a moment. If their likely trail led to the west of the city, then something they desired must certainly be there. But what, precisely, could it be?
“I understand. I’ll investigate what specific targets might be in the west of the city, and then I’ll upload the information to you.”
With that, Mu Rong Xin Xue provided Lan Baiyuan with her contact details, noting that online communication would greatly simplify matters.
“Aside from this, is there anything else?” ‘Based on this limited information, finding anything truly useful would be challenging.’
“All the information is here, though frankly, the difficulty is considerable; these details are almost as good as nothing.” As she spoke, Lan Baiyuan produced a USB drive and placed it in Mu Rong Xin Xue’s palm. This, for now, represented all the clues she had managed to gather.
“Very well. If there’s nothing else, it’s getting late, so I’ll take my leave.”
Glancing at the dimming sky, Mu Rong Xin Xue couldn’t help but remark. Before arriving, she had walked the entire way, having once again forgotten her wallet and finding no balance in her WeChat or Alipay accounts. The journey had consumed considerable time, transforming the twilight she left in into the current gloom.
“Indeed. Let’s conclude for today, then.”
“Yes, that works.”
As she spoke, and just as Mu Rong Xin Xue prepared to push open the door and depart, Lan Baiyuan suddenly called out to her.
“Wait, I forgot to give you my contact information. Also, start making preparations these next few days; action might commence very soon.”
“Understood.”
With a slight nod, Mu Rong Xin Xue exited the room.
Watching Mu Rong Xin Xue’s retreating figure, Lan Baiyuan flopped back onto the large bed in the room. ‘Mu Rong Luo Ye, Mu Rong Xin Xue… I wonder what their relationship is. A coincidence, perhaps? I suppose I’ll find out soon enough.’
