“Hey, what’s wrong with you?”
I’d only opened a door, so what could possibly be wrong? Could it be that opening a door somehow transported her to another world, only for her to immediately retreat? That’s too absurd.
Huang Beifeng remained silent, merely covering her mouth to let out a few soft coughs as she continuously backed away. Even in her retreat, she didn’t forget to point towards the doorway, gesturing for me to go inside and take a look.
Something was truly amiss. I decided to investigate.
Gently pushing open the slightly ajar door, I hadn’t even taken a single step inside before a thick, musty scent of dust abruptly assailed me.
“Cough, cough, cough, so much dust.”
Just like Huang Beifeng, I was no better off. Clapping a hand over my mouth and nose, I retreated from the room and pulled the door shut.
Curiosity truly was a killer.
“How could there be so much dust?”
Having finally managed to stifle her coughing, Huang Beifeng looked at me and couldn’t help but ask.
I had no idea why there was such an exorbitant amount of dust. If I had, would I be in this state?
“It’s probably because no one has lived here for so long, and the room has remained sealed. The dust has simply accumulated over time. It seems impossible to clean all of this today, so for tonight, you can just sleep in my sister’s room.”
“That seems to be the only option then.”
Sighing with resignation, Huang Beifeng took my arm once more and led me downstairs.
Though our movements were not particularly loud, Mu Rong Xin Xue, still reclined on the sofa, opened her eyes to glance at us. She then pointed a finger towards the phone resting on the coffee table.
“Your phone dropped. Also, I just spoke with Mom and Dad. No need to go into details, just that Beifeng will be staying here for a while.”
Subconsciously, I patted my non-existent pocket – indeed, my phone was gone. Trousers truly were more convenient; holding a phone in hand meant it could drop at any moment.
Taking the phone, I unlocked it, and the sight of a dozen missed calls in the call log sent a jolt of alarm through me, making me break out in a cold sweat.
How truly embarrassing. Mom and Dad had called so many times, and I hadn’t heard a single one. But judging by Mu Rong Xin Xue’s demeanor, she must have smoothed things over with them for me.
Phew, I certainly hoped so.
“Mu Rong Luo Ye, isn’t it time to start dinner?”
Wait, dinner?
Alright, alright. Since you helped me smooth things over with Mom and Dad, I suppose I’ll cook.
My stomach was growling anyway. After getting home, I’d immediately rushed to my computer, completely forgetting to eat.
Just as I was about to head off, I suddenly realized I seemed to have overlooked someone.
“Oh, right, Beifeng, have you eaten?”
“Not yet.”
Shaking her head, she looked at me with a hint of surprise in her eyes.
“When did you learn to cook?”
From what she remembered, I was only capable of making “dark cuisine.” The thought of me cooking now was almost beyond her imagination.
“Well, I picked up a few things over the summer.”
I explained with a smile, turning to head for the kitchen, but Huang Beifeng suddenly caught my arm.
“Wait, I’ll come with you.”
“What, afraid I’m going to make ‘dark cuisine’?”
She didn’t reply, but the faint blush that crept onto her cheeks told me all I needed to know.
So, she still had no faith in me, huh? Well, she would soon learn that her worries were entirely unfounded.
The only one present with nothing to do was Mu Rong Xin Xue, still reclined on the sofa. Watching the two figures gradually disappear from her sight, she slowly closed her eyes.
“I wonder how much longer these peaceful days will last. The time… it must be drawing near.”

Upon entering the kitchen, I, as usual, surveyed the contents of the refrigerator to decide what dishes to prepare.
“Oh, Beifeng, what would you like to eat?”
“Hey, aren’t you going to ask Mu Rong Xin Xue’s opinion?”
Hearing her, I simply smiled, then carefully rinsed the cutting board under the tap.
“My sister? No need to ask her. She’s not picky at all; she’s practically an omnivore.”
After cleaning the cutting board and setting it aside, I walked to the refrigerator and, tilting my head, consulted her again for her preferences.
After a brief moment of contemplation, Huang Beifeng spoke.
“How about this? A medium-rare black pepper steak, served with a side of pasta, and a bowl of cream soup. No, wait, it’s a bit late now, so let’s skip the cream soup.”
Listening quietly as she finished, I merely glanced at the cucumber I was holding. Inadvertently, I squeezed a little too hard, almost snapping it in two.
“My dear lady, do you think this is a Western restaurant? How about something more ordinary?”
“But sometimes we eat like this at home, too.”
Huang Beifeng looked at me with a hint of confusion, her tone slightly questioning.
“Ugh, the evils of capitalism, indeed.”
I increased the pressure in my hand once more, and the cucumber, held so tightly, finally snapped under my grip.
“Forget about steak. We don’t have the ingredients at home, and even if we did, I wouldn’t know how to make it. It’s getting late, so let’s just make some simple vegetarian dishes.”
“So, do you need any help?”
I pointed to the vegetables I’d taken out, gesturing for Huang Beifeng to help wash them. As for the snapped cucumber, it would just have to be made into a cold salad.
Oh, and those steamed buns! Can’t forget them. I’ll just pop them into the steamer rack when the rice is cooking.
With everything prepared, it was time to get cooking.
