Chapter 52: Detention and a Confrontation

“So, what is your reason for spending half the class period changing clothes?”

Watching Meng Yue approach, I instinctively recoiled a half-step. ‘This is it, we’re done for! If it weren’t for you, Huang Beifeng, would we really have returned so late?’

Thinking back to what had just transpired, it should have taken no more than half an hour to change and return. Yet, because of Huang Beifeng, we had wasted half a class period there.

By the time we realized our folly and rushed back, it was, predictably, too late.

And to make matters worse, we were caught by Meng Yue, who was patrolling the hallway, checking on the classes.

Now, we were truly doomed.

“Um, Teacher Meng, it’s really just as we said! We truly didn’t bring our clothes with us initially, so we had to run back to borrow some, and that’s why we’re late. So…”

Slightly sticking out her tongue, Huang Beifeng feigned an expression of deep regret over being tardy.

‘Unbelievable, this girl is quite the actress, even better than me.’

“Teacher Meng, we genuinely didn’t mean to be late. Truly, it was just an accident, so…”

Her unspoken plea was clear: she hoped Meng Yue wouldn’t punish them. However, judging by the expression on Meng Yue’s face, it seemed she had already seen through Huang Beifeng’s scheme.

“Alright, you two may return to class. Stay after school; this week’s cleaning duty is yours.”

‘Huh? I thought we’d have to write a self-criticism essay or something. Just cleaning duty? That’s acceptable. Wait, a whole week? Could we perhaps change it to a thousand-word essay instead of cleaning?’

But upon seeing the hesitant look on Huang Beifeng’s face, I instinctively broke into a sweat. ‘No, no, absolutely not. If this girl opens her mouth, it might turn into a month of cleaning duty.’

‘No, absolutely not.’

Quickly covering Huang Beifeng’s mouth before she could utter another word, I swiftly pulled her out of the faculty office.

‘You, my friend, should really learn to keep quiet.’

“Wuwu, Luo Ye, let me go! I can still talk! I won’t let us get cleaning duty!”

‘Tsk, if I let you keep talking, it’ll probably turn into a month of cleaning. We need to make a quick escape.’

Returning to the classroom, I tried to be discreet, perhaps due to the clothes I was wearing. Yet, opening the classroom door abruptly during a lecture was bound to draw attention.

However, beyond the normal glances, I sensed a different kind of gaze, one laced with something else.

A chill ran down my spine!

Even as I carefully made my way back to my seat, I could feel that I had indeed attracted many eyes. ‘This outfit truly brings nothing but trouble!’

Among the curious stares, I vaguely detected a hint of hostility.

‘Tsk, no need to guess.’ Shifting my gaze to a seat in the back corner on my left, I found that the owner of that hostile look had met my eyes.

‘Tsk, Fang Kehan, what grudge do you hold against me? I don’t recall ever interacting with you, yet from your perspective, it’s as if I’ve infringed upon your interests. It’s utterly unreasonable.’

Shaking my head slightly in resignation, I redirected my attention to the lesson. At this moment, focusing on class was paramount.

Time passed swiftly, and before I knew it, school was dismissed.

“See you tomorrow, Classmate Luo Ye.”

After waving goodbye to Tang Xiao Rou, I waited for everyone to leave before grabbing a broom with Huang Beifeng and beginning our cleaning duties.

After shooting her a disgruntled look, I suddenly heard a loud bang. The trash can by the back door of the classroom flew up, landing heavily and scattering its contents across the floor.

At her command, seven or eight girls filed into the classroom.
