As Bai Yu stood by the window, gazing up at the starry sky, Moweila’s voice, long unheard, resonated within her mind.
[Are you looking at the stars? That’s good. Frequently gazing at the night sky benefits both of your spiritual cores.]
“I’m alright,” Bai Yu replied, “just a little melancholic. Things have been changing so rapidly lately that I haven’t even fully come to terms with these sudden shifts myself.”
Bai Yu shook her head, the recent Outer God invasion instilling in her an ominous premonition.
As for the duel with Cecilia, she hadn’t given it much thought; victory or defeat held little consequence for her. After all, there was no pressing urgency between her and Cecilia, and the so-called engagement felt entirely unreal to her.
Moreover, Lu Xingyao seemed unaware, and Bai Yu had a dreadful feeling that if she were to find out, something terrible might ensue.
[As long as you’re fine, that’s what matters. The person coming this time won’t be easy to deal with, after all.]
Bai Yu immediately reacted, pressing Moweila for more information.
“This time? Who’s looking for me again?”
A sudden jolt of alarm shot through Bai Yu’s heart. She was awake now, but how perilous would it have been if she hadn’t been?
[Don’t worry. Even if you hadn’t woken up, I would have roused you. At the very least, your little girlfriend wouldn’t be in danger.]
“What ‘little girlfriend’!”
Bai Yu’s face flushed crimson; she and Lu Xingyao were not *that* kind of couple yet.
[Hmph, this isn’t the time to be discussing such things, is it?]
“So, who exactly is it, and will I be in danger?”
Bai Yu felt a little bewildered. Why wasn’t Moweila the least bit nervous?
[I don’t know, but based on their spiritual aura, it seems similar to the monsters from the dream last time. They’re heading your way now.]
Upon hearing this, Bai Yu could no longer sit still. ‘Isn’t this explosively dangerous?’ she thought. ‘How do they even know my location?’
Yet, Bai Yu’s immediate reaction wasn’t to ponder the identity of her pursuers, but to swiftly leave Lu Xingyao’s home, fearing that the impending battle might inadvertently endanger her.
[I speculate it might be from when you left the dream, and it’s connected to your weapon. Don’t you think its appearance was a little too coincidental?]
“Are you saying this is a trap?”
[Of course, but that Old Man is an exception; he genuinely seems to want to help you.]
“What should I do then? How much longer until they get here?”
Without a moment’s hesitation, Bai Yu slipped on her shoes, grabbed [Morpheus’s Whisper], and, snatching two fruit knives from the kitchen, rushed out.
She was now filled with immense regret. She should have acquired a proper cold weapon when she returned; otherwise, she wouldn’t even be able to use her few mystical arts.
For now, she could only make do with fruit knives, though she wondered how long these two blades would last.
[Based on their speed, I estimate they’ll arrive in about ten minutes.]
“Holy hell, that fast? What kind of power do they wield?”
Bai Yu’s head spun at the revelation; this was tantamount to having a blade pressed against her throat.
[Hmm… I haven’t fully recovered, so I can only get a rough estimate, but I can say for certain that, by the standards of this era’s mystic system, they are at least Tier 6 or above.]
“What did you just say?”
Bai Yu seriously considered whether she should quickly leave a will. With that level of power, even if she and Lu Xingyao teamed up, they wouldn’t stand a chance.
[Of course, I didn’t make a mistake. This time is different from when you were in the dream. In the dream, no monster would exceed your ability limit, except for that final one. You did quite well in that battle, by the way.]
“What’s the point of talking about that now? They’re practically at my doorstep!”
Bai Yu felt like cursing, but then realized Moweila likely had no father to curse at.
[There’s no need to panic. Since I’m telling you this, there’s definitely a solution.]
Moweila’s tone remained calm and reassuring as she spoke.
“A solution? What is it? Can you still give me a power-up?”
Bai Yu’s interest was instantly piqued. If Moweila could speak so casually, then there had to be a way out.
‘Sure enough,’ she mused, ‘with my protagonist’s luck, there must be a cheat or a power-up.’
[A power-up? You’re thinking too much. No matter how much I help you, it’s impossible to cross four or five tiers to contend with them.]
Moweila delivered a direct, negative response.
“Huh? Then why are you so relaxed? I’m about to die here!”
Bai Yu truly admired Moweila’s composure. Hadn’t Moweila said that if Bai Yu died, she would vanish as well?
[Hmph, have you forgotten what abilities I possess?]
Moweila stated dismissively.
“Abilities? What are you talking about?”
Bai Yu racked her brain, but could only recall that Moweila was the last witch.
[How do you think I knew of your existence in the distant past? Surely you haven’t forgotten that?]
“Are you saying you foresaw the future?”
Shock surged through Bai Yu’s heart. Could it be that in the future, she truly defeated the approaching enemy?
[While it’s not entirely clear, the future I saw assures me that you will certainly not die. That much is definite.]
Hearing this, Bai Yu finally felt her worries subside.
“So, that means I must have defeated them somehow, right?”
Bai Yu asked, entertaining the thought that perhaps her opponent was merely a paper tiger, possessing high-tier power but inherently weak.
[Impossible. In my foresight, there’s no scenario where you could defeat them.]
“Ha, then how did I survive?”
Bai Yu was utterly speechless.
[I don’t know, but you can only try to stall them for as long as possible. There will always be a sliver of hope.]
“This… do you know anything about them?”
Bai Yu could only brace herself and prepare for the inevitable.
[They are very unique. They seem to be non-human, like you, but their physical constitution is quite poor compared to humans, though their mastery over mystical arts is very high.]
“Non-human!”
This piece of information, however, piqued Bai Yu’s interest; she was curious to see what a race beyond humanity looked like.
[Exactly. In a fight against them, your best bet is close-quarters combat. Witches possess excellent physical attributes, with almost no weaknesses.]
“If that’s the case, would I stand a chance using [Kin of the Night]?”
[Impossible. A tenfold amplification simply can’t bridge such an enormous gap. However, I did preserve some power during my slumber, which can enhance your mystical art’s effect once.]
Bai Yu immediately perked up. ‘Sure enough, there’s a cheat after all,’ she thought. ‘Heaven never bars all roads.’
“Enhance my mystical art? By how much can it be boosted?”
Bai Yu knew that the most beneficial thing for her right now was the boost provided by [Kin of the Night].
[From ten times to fifty times. But even with that, it will only ensure you can resist for a period without being instantly killed. The disparity between tiers is truly immense.]
“Fifty times!”
Bai Yu swallowed hard, marveling not only at the sheer magnitude of the amplification but also at the fact that even with such an immense boost, it would only guarantee she wouldn’t be instantly killed, not that she’d be able to truly fight back.
Bolstered by this newfound confidence, Bai Yu immediately left the vicinity of the house, making sure to avoid populated areas. She couldn’t fathom how her pursuers dared to attack in broad daylight.
Perhaps if she could hold out for a while, the Dragon Summer Investigation Bureau would arrive to assist, especially since she had provided them with quite a few valuable pieces of information.
