Chapter 169: Assassination in Kari City

In Kari City, Bai Yu and Ellie Roth raced through the streets. The [Aura Concealment] magic worked flawlessly on them, ensuring no one could detect their presence.

“Ellie Roth, have you memorized the location?”

Bai Yu turned her head, addressing Ellie Roth. In a short while, they would have to split up; the church and the City Lord’s manor were quite far apart. To ensure the element of surprise, separate routes were essential.

“Of course, no problem. Also, how long will this arcanist skill last after you leave?”

Ellie Roth asked casually. While she didn’t strictly need the skill, given her strength, she could easily rampage through the city.

However, to avoid implicating innocent civilians who might discover her, she had asked Bai Yu to use the arcanist skill on her as well.

“Approximately ten more minutes. But we could recast it on you now, which would extend the duration even further.”

Bai Yu’s cowlick swayed as she looked at Ellie Roth. She added, “However, this aura concealment state will be dispelled after you attack or use an arcanist skill, so be mindful of that.”

“No need. The time is perfectly sufficient.”

Ellie Roth flashed a confident smile. She estimated it would take her less than two minutes to reach Kari City’s church, even while being careful not to alert anyone.

“Very well then, I’ll be off.”

Bai Yu nodded, heading in the opposite direction from Ellie Roth.

It was only on her way to the City Lord’s manor that Bai Yu finally had the chance to truly observe the town.

Before, having just arrived, she had been too rushed to pay attention to her surroundings.

Now, she could clearly see the suffering of the city’s inhabitants.

It was evident that the common folk here lived even more miserably than the medieval people described in history books; they were all skin and bones.

Bai Yu recalled Ellie Roth’s words and understood. This was likely the result of the previous City Lord, who seemed to be no good. He must have constantly oppressed these ordinary people.

Killing him outright had been too lenient; such a person deserved to be burned at the stake.

Bai Yu shook her head helplessly. She didn’t want to meddle further in this matter. If they truly succeeded in breaking through that icy wall, these people would be accepted by various nations, and Bai Yu wouldn’t need to worry so much.

After all, this was a civilized society now. At the very least, their lives would surely be far better than they were currently.

Still under [Aura Concealment], Bai Yu quietly arrived at the City Lord’s manor gate.

Unlike the dilapidated houses in the town, the City Lord’s manor was exceptionally luxurious. Not only were the buildings exquisite, but even the guards were fully armored.

Bai Yu remained expressionless. In her [Aura Concealment] state, it was impossible for these gate-watching ants to discover her.

A true assassin needed no stealth.

Bai Yu walked directly through the main gate, her strides swift, yet not a single person showed any doubt. They continued to glance around, as if Bai Yu didn’t exist.

Bai Yu chose not to alert anyone. To catch the bandits, one must first catch their king; she would deal with the newly appointed City Lord first. Without a leader, any offense would be much easier to handle.

Moreover, this City Lord held no intelligence value, so there was no need to capture him alive.

Bai Yu entered the City Lord’s manor, finding the opulence within reaching a terrifying degree. Even in modern times, creating such grandeur would require immense financial and material resources.

She wondered how it was produced in a place with such low productivity.

‘Forget it.’

Bai Yu quickened her pace, arriving directly at a place that resembled a grand hall. On a massive, luxurious throne in the distance sat an arrogant young man.

He was surrounded by fully armored soldiers, as well as several combat personnel in different uniforms. Bai Yu sensed spiritual power emanating from them.

These were likely the Knights that Laika had mentioned, as they were the arcanists within the noble factions. Bai Yu casually scanned the room, noticing that all the arcanists were gathered here.

There were over thirty individuals, ranging from Tier 1 to Tier 3. It seemed this new City Lord was truly terrified of death, having assembled such a vast force solely for his protection.

However, Bai Yu could understand it, given how tragically his father had been killed. “But he doesn’t seem to be grieving at all.”

Bai Yu watched the young man on the throne leisurely eating grapes someone had given him, looking utterly content. A normal person, shortly after their father’s death, would hardly appear so cheerful.

It seemed this fellow had harbored ambitions of becoming City Lord for quite some time. Bai Yu scoffed, pulling out Morpheus’s Whisper from her waist.

A faint smile played on Bai Yu’s lips, as if mocking these ignorant parasites. The enemy was right before them, yet not one of the thirty-plus individuals had noticed.

The large-caliber pistol was aimed directly at the new City Lord’s head. He showed no reaction, still eating grapes. Spiritual power continuously gathered within Bai Yu’s pistol.

This spiritual bullet was astonishingly potent, as if imbued with the grievances of the town’s populace. “Die.”

Bai Yu’s sweet, clear voice instantly jolted everyone present into awareness. But it was already too late. That bullet, or rather, a cannon shell, instantly reached the new City Lord, traveling at an unimaginable supersonic speed.

A massive explosion erupted within a small radius, ensuring maximum lethality. With a single shot, Bai Yu’s Aura Concealment failed, and her silver-white figure suddenly appeared before everyone.

“What’s going on? Who are you?!” A Knight stared at Bai Yu in the distance, shouting in shock.

“The City… the City Lord…”

A trembling voice echoed, accompanied by the clatter of armor hitting the ground. Some soldiers, terrified by the City Lord’s appearance, had collapsed onto the ground, their legs unable to support them.

The scene was simply too horrifying. The once carefree young man on the throne had completely vanished. Even the luxurious throne behind him and the row of pillars were gone.

All that remained were scattered bits of flesh and blood splattered across the surroundings. “Ahhhhhh!”

A nearby servant, utterly terrified, dropped the fruit platter in their hands and fell to their knees. They had never witnessed such a brutal scene.

Bai Yu casually flicked the pistol in her hand, performing a perfect gun twirl. “It seems my shooting skills have indeed improved significantly.”

Morpheus’s Whisper, being the weapon that had accompanied Bai Yu for the longest time, was naturally handled with unparalleled familiarity.

“She assassinated the City Lord! Seize her!” A Knight roared in fury, his eyes bloodshot, and charged recklessly toward Bai Yu.
