Join the ServerBai Yu and Ellie Roth continuously observed their surroundings, yet found nothing out of the ordinary.
From within, the proprietress’s cooking sounds drifted, making it truly feel as if she were preparing lunch specifically for them, two weary travelers.
The two exchanged glances, wondering if they had truly misjudged the proprietress.
Bai Yu and Ellie Roth did not, however, relax their vigilance. Instead, they meticulously scanned every corner of their surroundings, hoping to uncover any useful clues.
The most suspicious detail, the one that prevented them from truly letting down their guard, was the complete absence of other customers.
Even if this establishment was considered more luxurious and didn’t attract a massive crowd, surely it shouldn’t be entirely devoid of patrons.
How could such a place possibly stay in business? Wouldn’t it surely operate at a catastrophic loss?
Bai Yu had never run a shop herself, so she remained oblivious to such intricacies.
A moment later, the proprietress emerged from the kitchen, her hands conspicuously empty.
She saw Bai Yu and Ellie Roth sitting there with perfectly calm expressions, seemingly unbothered.
Her face instantly contorted, and she nearly lost her footing.
Bai Yu and Ellie Roth did not miss this subtle detail, yet they remained silent, simply watching the proprietress with wary eyes.
The proprietress hastily waved her hands, a bead of cold sweat trickling down her face. She then scurried back into the kitchen, only to reappear carrying two plates of food.
Bai Yu could see they were indeed two steaks, topped with an unknown sauce that, nonetheless, looked incredibly appetizing.
The proprietress spread her hands, resuming her gentle smile, and gestured for Bai Yu and Ellie Roth to eat.
This time, she remained standing, clearly intending to watch Bai Yu and Ellie Roth as they ate.
Yet, Bai Yu and Ellie Roth made no move, merely staring at the proprietress with icy gazes.
Under their scrutinizing stares, the proprietress began to show signs of fear, retreating slowly and muttering words Bai Yu couldn’t comprehend.
At this moment, Bai Yu and Ellie Roth also rose from their seats, not even sparing a glance at the steaks before them.
While they longed for a proper meal, they understood that maintaining vigilance was paramount in such a place.
The proprietress before them was clearly expressing more than simple goodwill.
“Moweila, is this person an Arcanist?”
Bai Yu wasn’t sure if the concept of an Arcanist existed in this region. However, any civilized place was bound to have individuals with extraordinary abilities.
From ancient times to the present, no matter the location, mystery had always interwoven with history. This was the only truth Bai Yu currently understood.
[No, but this person likely carries something akin to a wondrous item. You must be cautious.]
Moweila’s voice resonated within Bai Yu’s mind. She had been in a dormant state recently, using Bai Yu’s spiritual core to slowly repair her own soul.
This, of course, did not affect Bai Yu in any way; her spiritual core reserves were vast. Moweila’s actions were merely a preparation for her own slim chance of future resurrection.
Though she no longer held much hope, in Bai Yu, she genuinely saw the glory of a Witch.
Heeding Moweila’s words, Bai Yu nodded. She stood and, alongside Ellie Roth, began to approach the proprietress.
The proprietress continued to retreat, but as she reached the bar, her expression abruptly transformed.
It was an instantaneous change, a complete shift without any prior warning.
Her face suddenly twisted into a vicious, malevolent sneer, her eyes gleaming with pure malice.
At this moment, she fixed Bai Yu and Ellie Roth with that hateful gaze. Simultaneously, she began to shout loudly.
“Hēi, lāo, Xī Lā Lǐ!”
Bai Yu couldn’t understand the meaning of these words. However, she immediately sensed that something was amiss, and she and Ellie Roth stood back-to-back.
In an instant, the restaurant’s main door was kicked open. One by one, fully armed guards strode in, completely surrounding the interior of the dining hall.
Their expressions were ferocious. All of them glared at Bai Yu and Ellie Roth.
Simultaneously, a middle-aged Man emerged from the restaurant’s entrance. His attire was distinctly different from that of the others.
Bai Yu casually glanced at him, surmising he was likely a figure akin to the town’s Lord.
As he entered, the proprietress immediately knelt at his feet, as if she had just beheld an Emperor. She babbled incoherently, her words unintelligible.
All the while, her finger pointed directly at Bai Yu and Ellie Roth.
“My Lord, these two appear to be Audfoger people who survived from before, or perhaps their descendants!”
The proprietress continued to lament, believing herself incredibly fortunate today. Unlike the ignorant masses, she had actually seen people who came from outside.
Such individuals were the most hated by the nobility and the Church, the very ones ordered to be utterly annihilated.
These people had brought notions of a ‘new world’ to the ignorant populace, severely threatening the established rule of the nobles and the Church.
Therefore, upon learning of such a group, the Church and the nobility initiated a large-scale hunt for the Audfoger people.
They even implored the deities to unleash endless blizzards, meant to obstruct those who, for reasons unknown, had managed to cross the ice wall and return to their homeland.
From that time onward, no new Audfoger people ever appeared again.
The Church and the nobility then began their final extermination of the Audfoger people.
A few years prior, they had believed themselves to have finally eliminated all of the Audfoger people.
‘This maiden in luxurious attire, speaking incomprehensible words…’
‘How could those ignorant masses possibly know? At this very moment, only a select few were aware of the Audfoger people.’
‘To think she had actually found these lingering remnants again! Perhaps they were even descendants of the Audfoger.’
The proprietress thought this to herself, steadily accusing them to the Lord.
After hearing the Woman’s words, the middle-aged Man’s expression grew solemn. He had never imagined such a situation could arise in his own city-state.
His subconscious told him something was amiss. He intended to hand the two individuals before him over to the Church.
“Advance, seize them! Alive!”
Incited by the Lord’s command, all the soldiers immediately surged forward, steadily closing in on Bai Yu and Ellie Roth.
“It seems we’ve been thoroughly played.”
Bai Yu shrugged helplessly. She had felt this way from the very beginning—how could good people possibly exist in such an environment?
“…”
Ellie Roth, however, offered no response. This surprised Bai Yu somewhat; Ellie Roth shouldn’t be easily frightened.
After all, the people before them were merely ordinary individuals. They could be dealt with effortlessly.
Bai Yu turned her head, witnessing Ellie Roth’s face, now contorted with unbridled fury.
While it did not diminish Ellie Roth’s beauty, the overflowing killing intent was so potent that it even made Bai Yu flinch. It seemed Ellie Roth was truly enraged.
Bai Yu surmised that Ellie Roth was now unleashing all the pressure she had accumulated over the past few days. She was like a powder keg, perfectly ignited at this very moment.
At this moment, Ellie Roth’s gray left eye flickered with a faint glow, meticulously imprinting every single person before her into her mind.
“Not one… will escape.”
Ellie Roth smiled faintly, murmuring to herself.
