Chapter 162: An Unexpected Alliance

Upon reading the letter, Bai Yu and Ellie Roth frowned, exchanging uneasy glances.

Laika watched them with confusion. Their faces remained hidden beneath the dark cloaks.

Moreover, her mother had only taught her the language of the ‘outsiders,’ not their written script, leaving her completely ignorant of the letter’s contents.

“Has something happened? What did Mother say…?” Laika asked faintly, a hint of worry in her voice. She feared they might refuse to help.

After all, she had nothing to offer them. Without any exchange of benefits, why would anyone lend their aid?

As Laika wrestled with her inner turmoil, Bai Yu and Ellie Roth simultaneously removed their dark cloaks.

At this moment, Laika’s gaze was completely glued to Bai Yu’s face, her eyes unblinking.

“What is it? Is there something on my face?” Bai Yu asked, a little embarrassed, as she scratched her cheek.

Ellie Roth, meanwhile, was silently sulking. Bai Yu had completely stolen her thunder, and the young girl hadn’t even spared her a glance.

“No, nothing at all. I just… didn’t react quickly enough,” Laika stammered with a laugh, unsure of what she was even saying.

“What’s your name?” Bai Yu asked next. Unsure of what else to say, she decided to simply ask the maiden’s name.

“My name? I’m Laika!” Laika puffed out her chest. Her own development was similar to Ellie Roth’s—neither too big nor too small.

Bai Yu merely glanced at her for a moment before looking away. However, Laika’s confident and sunny demeanor was somewhat appealing to Bai Yu.

Despite her earlier embarrassment, Bai Yu could tell that Laika was a very strong-willed child.

She had simply never experienced anything on a grand scale, making her easily startled.

“My name is Bai Yu.”

“I am Ellie Roth Charlotte.”

Bai Yu and Ellie Roth introduced themselves as well.

“We just read the letter your mother gave us. If the information within is true, we have no objections to cooperating with you. After all, our goal is also to leave this place,” Bai Yu stated simply.

She had no reason to refuse. They currently had nowhere else to go, and joining Laika’s organization would allow them to gather more information.

“Really? That’s wonderful!” Laika exclaimed excitedly, springing to her feet.

“Er, while that’s true, there are still a few things that need clarification,” Bai Yu added. Seeing Laika’s reaction, she found herself at a loss for words.

Laika spoke earnestly, her tone serious. “Though our scale is small, our resolve to overthrow the nobles and the Church is unwavering.”

“Including myself, there are thirteen Transcendent individuals. However, with two such powerful Transcendent beings as yourselves, I’m sure we can succeed!” Laika said with a cheerful smile, causing Bai Yu and Ellie Roth to frown.

“Wait, there are too many questions,” Bai Yu quickly interjected. She couldn’t understand anything Laika was saying.

“First, your pants…” Bai Yu pointed a finger at Laika’s soaking wet pants.

Laika looked down, then quickly squatted in embarrassment. Fortunately, she hadn’t worn trousers today, or it would have been even more awkward.

To be so startled by two girls was utterly humiliating. Laika felt she couldn’t face anyone.

“Don’t look at me, wuwuwu!” Laika squatted, burying her head in her arms, not daring to look at Bai Yu.

“Forget it, I’ll help you dry them,” Bai Yu said, shaking her head. She used [Fantasy World] to generate a ball of flame in her hand, heating the surrounding air.

“This is?!” Laika exclaimed in shock.

“Is Lady Bai Yu a Transcendent who controls fire?!” Laika asked, astonished. She had never seen such power before.

“Er, I don’t know what you mean by ‘Transcendent,’ but this is just one of my arcanist skills,” Bai Yu said, scratching her head, as she thoroughly dried Laika’s pants.

Bai Yu controlled the heat perfectly, giving Laika a pleasant warmth.

“Thank you…” Laika said, her face flushed crimson, to Bai Yu.

“It’s nothing. After all, it wouldn’t be good if others saw you like this.” As a girl herself, Bai Yu understood that Laika would naturally care about her image.

However, seeing Laika still somewhat worried, Bai Yu helplessly shook her head. ‘I won’t tell anyone, so don’t worry. Don’t be so silly.’

“Understood, thank you…” Laika’s face grew even redder. She felt as though she had been lectured by a child who appeared much younger than herself.

“Now, let’s get down to business,” Ellie Roth said from the side. She had held back for too long, with far too many questions for this timid maiden.

“What exactly is this ‘Transcendent’ you speak of? Is it an Arcanist?” Ellie Roth felt that the concept of an Arcanist barely existed here, and the development of mysterious powers was ridiculously low.

This was evident from the arrows Laika had shot earlier; they were utterly pathetic. From her and Bai Yu’s perception, there were only three Arcanists in this small team.

Besides Laika, who was Tier 2, the remaining two were merely Tier 1. Their spiritual cores were pitifully small, and their combat power was hardly different from that of ordinary people.

Ellie Roth felt she could kick them to death.
