Join the ServerWaking up the next morning, Chen Lin yawned, washed up, then dressed neatly and headed to school.
When he opened his door, Chen Lin cautiously poked his head out to check the hallway. Confirming Yan wasn’t there, he breathed a slight sigh of relief.
It seemed Yan had been obedient. He had told her not to come today, and sure enough, she hadn’t.
Chen Lin shook his head helplessly. Maybe he shouldn’t have doubted Yan in the first place.
But she was a little girl—who knew if she might suddenly change her mind on a whim?
As he neared the school gate, Chen Lin spotted his friend Jin Jie from a distance. Jin Jie stood by the roadside outside the school, as still as a lamppost.
Chen Lin instinctively wanted to greet him, but the words died in his throat. He noticed a luxury car parked beside Jin Jie.
Jin Jie was leaning down, talking and laughing with someone inside the car.
Chen Lin stepped closer to get a better look. After careful observation, he confirmed he wasn’t mistaken.
That luxury car belonged to Shihan, Meiyue’s younger sister. He had seen it just yesterday—why was it here again today?
Could she be monitoring him to make sure he wasn’t harassing Meiyue on the way to school?
The more he thought about it, the more plausible it seemed.
Maybe after school yesterday, she had lain in wait beside Meiyue, hoping to catch him red-handed.
Failing that, she hadn’t given up and was now staking out the morning commute as well.
Chen Lin’s head throbbed. She had completely misunderstood the situation.
He shouldn’t assume the worst. Maybe it was something else entirely—perhaps Shihan was just chatting with Jin Jie about other matters.
Chen Lin quickly retreated into a convenience store by the roadside and waited for ten minutes. Only when the school gate was about to close did the luxury car drive away, and Jin Jie slip into school just in time.
Seizing the opportunity, Chen Lin dashed into the school and caught up to Jin Jie.
Jin Jie saw his friend panting beside him and teased, “Did you sleep in today? You’re so late.”
“Not at all. I was watching you just now,” Chen Lin said, catching his breath.
“Watching me for what?” Jin Jie raised an eyebrow.
“I saw you talking to Meiyue’s sister. What were you discussing?” Chen Lin asked bluntly.
Since they were best friends, Chen Lin didn’t beat around the bush.
“Oh, you mean Shihan? She’s Meiyue’s sister? No wonder she’s so naturally beautiful—I was almost smitten. She looked familiar, now I know why,” Jin Jie remarked.
“Get to the point. What did she want from you?” Chen Lin was anxious to know.
“Actually, nothing much. She just asked me for some personal info about you,” Jin Jie admitted.
“Personal info about me?”
“Yeah, like your name, class, age, birthday, all sorts of random stuff.” Jin Jie confessed honestly.
Hearing this, Chen Lin frowned.
He knew it. She was indeed gathering intelligence. Probably trying to know her enemy inside and out to protect Meiyue.
It seemed the misunderstanding between him and Shihan ran deep.
Even though Shihan bore him hostility, Chen Lin thought Meiyue was lucky to have such a sister.
How could a sister who cared so much for her older sister not be a blessing?
“Did you give her all my info?” Chen Lin asked.
“Of course. Everything I knew. From your love for fried noodles and milk candy, to your social media accounts and phone number.
Shihan asked very detailed questions, so I answered for quite a while.” Jin Jie spoke freely, without any guilt for divulging Chen Lin’s privacy, as if it were trivial.
Chen Lin wasn’t angry. He knew Jin Jie was just that easygoing.
Jin Jie always believed that privacy was something only girls had; boys had no such concept.
Not one to dwell on things, Chen Lin figured telling Shihan this info wasn’t harmful.
In fact, it might even be beneficial.
He half-hoped Shihan would add him on social media. Right now, he lacked a platform to explain things to her.
“By the way, why did Meiyue’s sister ask for your contact info? Did she think you’re the creep harassing her sister and wants to know her enemy?” Jin Jie suddenly asked.
That was the only explanation he could think of for why Shihan would want Chen Lin’s social media.
As for the absurd idea that Shihan or Meiyue might like Chen Lin—that never crossed his mind.
Hitting the nail on the head, Chen Lin felt a metaphorical arrow pierce his knee.
Seeing Chen Lin’s bitter expression, Jin Jie knew he had guessed right.
“Looks like you did something that’s easy to misunderstand. Find a chance to explain yourself later,” Jin Jie said earnestly, patting his friend’s shoulder, knowing Chen Lin’s character.
Faced with his friend’s consolation, Chen Lin could only force a bitter smile.
During lunch break, after eating, Chen Lin sat at his desk and checked his phone. He found a friend request from a social app.
Without hesitation, he accepted it.
Then he immediately typed in the chat box:
[Hello, may I ask who you are?]
Chen Lin hoped this stranger was Shihan, not some salesman.
Perhaps his prayer worked—his wish came true.
[I have something to say to you. Wait for me outside the school gate after class.]
A message came back.
Although the tone was aggressive, it actually delighted Chen Lin. The sender hadn’t identified themselves, but the accusatory tone was ten-to-one Shihan.
Salesmen or random strangers wouldn’t ask him to wait outside the school gate.
He typed a few lines to reply, then deleted them all.
Better not send polite pleasantries—that might only muddy the waters.
[Got it.]
He replied with a concise message. Chen Lin felt this was the best approach.
