Chapter 103: A Watchful Night

Liying lay on Chen Lin’s bed, covered by the bedding he’d provided. She wore the T-shirt he’d given her and had used his shower gel, shampoo, and facial cleanser. His scent seemed to softly wrap around her.

In such an environment, how could Liying possibly fall asleep? In the darkness, she lay comfortably, occasionally squirming with excitement.

If she closed her eyes, it was as if Chen Lin was lying right beside her.

Outside the bedroom, Chen Lin lay on the sofa. Since he hadn’t changed clothes, he only used a corner of the blanket to cover his belly.

He couldn’t help glancing toward his bedroom.

For various reasons, he had let Liying stay for now.

Although Liying hadn’t shown any signs of being a threat, Chen Lin didn’t think that meant he could relax his guard.

Perhaps Liying was planning something terrible and vicious. It wasn’t impossible.

Due to lack of rest, after staring for a while, drowsiness quickly swept over him. Chen Lin felt his upper and lower eyelids start to fight, occasionally wrestling together.

He shook his head, reminding himself to stay alert. Now wasn’t the time to rest.

He must not fall asleep tonight. He had to stay up through the night, guarding against Liying the whole time.

His upper and lower eyelids started wrestling again. At first, they’d fight for just three or four seconds before Chen Lin immediately opened his eyes.

Then they’d wrestle for several minutes, and Chen Lin would open his eyes for one second before closing them again.

When Chen Lin realized he’d fallen asleep, he jolted awake, unsure how long he’d been out.

When he opened his eyes, it was already starting to get light outside. Chen Lin checked his phone; it wasn’t yet time for his set alarm.

He estimated he’d slept for nearly five full hours.

He had no idea how it happened. Chen Lin hadn’t expected to fall asleep, let alone sleep for such a long time.

He knew very well that falling asleep was dangerous. Perhaps his subconscious felt Liying posed no threat, so he’d actually drifted off.

Still, Chen Lin admitted he’d slept very soundly. Fortunately, nothing terrible had happened. Otherwise, the consequences would have been unthinkable.

He checked his body and found that he hadn’t lost any limbs, nor was there any trace of injury.

Chen Lin lowered his head in thought for a while. Could Liying really be that obedient? She’d agreed to sleep properly, and she’d actually done so?

What about a “night raid”?

It wasn’t that Chen Lin was looking forward to it. He just didn’t dare to sleep, because he was guarding against that likely possibility.

Chen Lin got up from the sofa, stood on his tiptoes, and crept quietly toward the bedroom where Liying was.

He wanted to check whether Liying was really resting well.

He didn’t intend to peek at Liying. He simply wanted to confirm the situation.

So Chen Lin carefully approached his bedroom, feeling his heart beat a little fast. It was only a few steps away, but Chen Lin took a full minute to creep over, afraid of making the slightest sound.

Chen Lin poked half his head out and looked into the bedroom.

He saw Liying hugging her pillow like a stuffed animal as she slept. Her even breathing showed that she really did seem to be sleeping soundly.

After one look, Chen Lin immediately withdrew his head, afraid that the sleeping Liying would notice, and went back to the sofa.

Chen Lin remained silent. It seemed he had worried too much. There was no sign of anything unusual.

His set alarm time was five in the morning.

Although it was a bit early, Chen Lin had deliberately set it that way. He wanted to get up early so that Liying would leave his home sooner.

Chen Lin stared at the time on his phone screen. The virtual second hand ticked forward, notch by notch, until it returned to its starting point. The minute hand also returned to its starting point, and the hour hand advanced one notch.

At the same instant the hour, minute, and second hands all moved, the phone’s alarm rang.

“Liying, it’s already late. Time to get up.” Lying on the sofa, Chen Lin called out to Liying in the room.

Chen Lin’s home wasn’t large, so there was no need to shout. The person in the bedroom could clearly hear him.

Liying’s eyelids moved with some difficulty, then she rubbed hard against the pillow she was hugging. She seemed to be having trouble getting up.

Seeing that Liying didn’t respond, Chen Lin urged again: “Get up.”

Only then did Liying struggle out of bed. “…Yes, yes, I’m getting up.” Without opening her eyes, Liying stretched lazily.

Because she’d slept so comfortably on Chen Lin’s bed, Liying had no desire to get up. She even had the thought of skipping class.

Liying knew that even if she skipped class, Chen Lin wouldn’t let her stay, so she extinguished that thought.

After getting up, Liying walked over to the desk in the bedroom, where her neatly folded clothes were placed.

After a difficult mental struggle, Liying finally took off Chen Lin’s T-shirt that she was wearing.

Liying glanced behind her. Since last night, the bedroom door hadn’t been closed.

So if Chen Lin wanted to, he could observe the situation in the bedroom at any time.

Sure enough, even though he knew she was changing clothes, Chen Lin had no intention of peeking.

After sighing, Liying finished dressing. While washing up in the bathroom, she also combed her soft, smooth hair.

“What would you like for breakfast?” Chen Lin asked Liying.

Since preparing breakfast for one person was the same as doing it for two, Chen Lin planned to make a portion for Liying as well.

“I’ve already troubled you for a whole night. There’s no need to bother with breakfast. I should be heading to school around now.” Liying replied.

Chen Lin had only asked out of politeness in the first place. Since Liying declined, he was more than happy for her to leave his home as soon as possible.

Chen Lin nodded. “That’s true. It’s already late. You should head to school soon.”

“…” Liying had expected that Chen Lin wouldn’t try to keep her. Although a bit deflated, there was nothing she could do.

After Liying went downstairs, Chen Lin chased after her to remind her: “Don’t forget our agreement.”

“Of course I’ll keep it. Don’t forget to contact me, alright?” Liying shot back.

“Of course I won’t forget. There are still many issues between us that need to be properly discussed.” Chen Lin responded.

After leaving Chen Lin’s home, Liying walked a long way until she reached an empty bus stop. She opened her phone with delight.

The phone’s photo album was now filled with photos of Chen Lin sleeping, his face completely defenseless.

Looking at these photos, Liying felt extremely satisfied.

Originally, last night, Liying hadn’t planned to miss this opportunity. She’d intended to make something happen. Unfortunately, after seeing Chen Lin’s defenseless sleeping face, she’d ultimately chosen to give up, only taking a hundred or so photos to commemorate the night.

It wasn’t that she didn’t want to take more. Even if she took a thousand photos, Liying wouldn’t get bored.

She only stopped because she was worried Chen Lin might suddenly wake up.
