Chapter 110: Waiting for a Reply

After sending the message, Chen Lin waited patiently.

About a minute later, the teacher for this class entered with a textbook tucked under one arm. The class bell rang at the same time.

Chen Lin quickly stuffed his phone back into the desk. Normally, you couldn’t sneak looks at your phone during class.

But a quick glance, he figured, wouldn’t get him caught.

The phone was on silent. His hand rested on top of it, so if a message came in and it vibrated, he’d notice right away.

After about ten minutes with his hand on the phone, Chen Lin pulled it back.

He’d waited this long and still hadn’t gotten a reply from Liying.

Barring any surprises, she probably hadn’t noticed the message, or maybe she couldn’t reply during class.

In that case, there was no need to keep his hand in the desk in that odd position.

When the class ended, Chen Lin took out his phone, woke the screen, and checked if Liying had replied on the chat app.

Just as he’d expected during class, Liying hadn’t replied at all that period.

Not replying immediately wasn’t really strange.

If she hadn’t noticed earlier, she’d probably see it during the break.

So Chen Lin waited patiently, checking his phone from time to time.

Unfortunately, even when the next class started, Liying’s message still hadn’t arrived.

Chen Lin didn’t overthink it. Maybe Liying hadn’t checked her phone during either break.

He did that sometimes too, forgetting to check messages. That was normal.

Who stares at their phone all day? Everyone had things to deal with.

Morning classes were over, which meant lunchtime.

After lunch, Chen Lin sat on a bench by the playground, waiting for Liying’s reply.

It was already lunch break. Normally, she’d at least glance at her phone, no matter what.

Under the basketball hoops, some students who loved basketball were playing. Some even skipped lunch to grab the courts during break.

Even after the intense game under the hoops ended, Chen Lin’s phone still hadn’t received a reply from Liying.

Chen Lin checked the time. The next class was about to start. He needed to get back to the classroom.

He stood up from the bench and headed back. Once in the classroom, he sat down.

The teacher for the first afternoon class walked in right behind Chen Lin, almost brushing past him.

Inside, the teacher turned to the board and started writing quickly with chalk.

Unlike most of the students, Chen Lin didn’t watch the teacher. His eyes were on his phone screen.

Even now, Liying hadn’t replied.

For some reason, Chen Lin felt something was off.

In the past, Liying would never make him wait this long for a reply.

Besides, during lunch break, people normally didn’t forget to check their phones. Had she seen the message and decided not to reply right away? Or had something unexpected happened that kept her from replying?

Should he call her to check?

But this was class time; he couldn’t make a call. He decided to call her after this period.

With that plan, the class seemed to drag even more.

During class, Chen Lin kept glancing at his phone to see how much time was left.

Thirty-five minutes to go…

Twenty-six minutes…

Eighteen minutes…

Thirteen minutes…

Nine minutes… seven… six…

As the end of class approached, Chen Lin’s gaze stayed glued to his phone.

Finally, the bell rang through his agony. But the teacher hadn’t finished the lesson and kept the class going a little longer.

Why did they have to drag it out now? Chen Lin bounced his knee, waiting anxiously.

When it finally ended, Chen Lin rushed out of the classroom to an empty corner by the stairwell.

He took out his phone and pulled up Liying’s number, but just as he was about to press call, he hesitated.

Would calling directly make him seem too eager?

It was just one unanswered message. Calling her over that might set a bad precedent.

In the future, if Liying wanted to hear his voice, she might deliberately not reply.

The break was already short, and with the class running late, there was barely any time left.

Just as he was hesitating, the bell for the next class rang, and Chen Lin had to head back.

He didn’t need to be this anxious. Maybe Liying simply hadn’t seen the message.

School wasn’t over yet. He should give her more time.

Rushing her to reply would make it seem like he cared too much.

If she still hadn’t replied by after school, he wouldn’t call right away. He could send another message to ask what was going on.

Even when school was over, Chen Lin still hadn’t gotten a reply from Liying.

Because he was on duty that day, Chen Lin cleaned the classroom, and after finishing, he was the only one left in the empty room.

The orange-red glow of the setting sun slanted into the classroom and cast an orange pastel light over it.

Chen Lin sat on his desk, with no intention of leaving school right away. He took out his phone to check if Liying had replied.

But even now, there was still no chat bubble from Liying.

Chen Lin decided to send another message. He typed out a concerned inquiry, then deleted it, and pressed a single symbol.

[?]

In the end, he decided to send only that symbol. It wouldn’t make him seem uncaring, nor too concerned.

If he got home and still hadn’t heard from her, he could call then.

At the same time, Chen Lin received a new message from Yan.

Since there was still nothing from Liying, Chen Lin switched contacts and opened Yan’s chat window.

What caught his eye was a photo. It looked like a venue inside an indoor gymnasium, already set up, decorated with many handmade flowers.
