Chapter 11: A Child’s Confession

Like most boys his age, Chen Lin, an ordinary high school student, had never been confessed to by any girl.

He wasn’t deaf; he had heard Yan’s words clearly.

Every single word had reached his ears.

What was this? A little girl had just confessed to him?

He never imagined that such a situation would arise in his life.

Should he be happy?

No, what was there to be happy about? Yan was just an elementary school student.

As a high schooler, could he possibly take a child’s words seriously?

Maybe Yan hadn’t meant it as a confession at all; she had just blurted it out impulsively.

If he overanalyzed a child’s words, wouldn’t he, the older brother figure, seem childish and foolish?

That was right, this probably wasn’t a confession.

It might have been more like saying, “When I grow up, I’ll be Daddy’s wife.”

Still, for her to say something like that to him showed just how much she trusted and liked him.

He didn’t need to be rigid and reject her seriously; he could just treat this confession as a child’s playful whim.

Having figured this out, Chen Lin took a deep breath and spoke to Yan gently, “You said you want to be my wife when you grow up?”

“…Yes, yes… Is that not allowed?” Yan asked nervously, her heart feeling as if a big hand was squeezing it tightly, making it hard to breathe.

She was even a little afraid, afraid that the big brother in front of her would reject her.

Because she feared a cold rejection, she already regretted confessing.

She had been so happy just being in Chen Lin’s life, able to spend time with the person she liked. Confessing like this so hastily seemed too strange.

Maybe she had even scared Chen Lin.

She was such an idiot. She was already happy just cooking for the person she liked.

She felt happy just being able to see Chen Lin every day.

Why couldn’t she cherish this small but firm happiness? Why did she have to let her emotions get the better of her and say something like this?

She was really an idiot.

What if the person she liked now thought she was a weird girl and avoided her because of the pressure?

Involuntarily, Yan’s thoughts became more chaotic, negative thoughts overwhelming her mind.

Just before the pressure became too much, Chen Lin gently reached out his left hand and stroked Yan’s delicate cheek.

“Of course you can. Be my wife. But you have to wait until you grow up,” Chen Lin replied gently.

With Chen Lin’s words, the dark thoughts in Yan’s head vanished as if they had never existed.

Light dispelled the darkness. She had received the ideal response from the person she liked.

“Really?” Yan looked at Chen Lin blankly, never feeling such happiness before.

At that moment, nothing else mattered as long as she was with Chen Lin.

Chen Lin looked at her strangely because large teardrops were falling from Yan’s eyes. “Yan, why are you crying? Did I say something wrong?”

To be honest, Chen Lin was terrible at handling girls’ tears. He fumbled, even wondering if he had said something wrong.

“Eh… Really? Am I crying?”

Yan, as if she were an outsider, reached out and touched her own eye corner.

Ah, it was wet. So these were tears!

When had she started crying? She hadn’t even noticed.

Maybe her feelings of affection had overflowed uncontrollably and turned into tears.

These weren’t tears of sadness; she didn’t feel sad at all.

She felt very happy now, super super super happy. So these were tears of joy~

Even while crying, Yan smiled.

So the idiom her teacher had taught her was true: people really do cry tears of joy when they are happy.

Chen Lin didn’t know how to handle the little girl in front of him. She had been crying just now, but now she was smiling. What was going on? He was completely at a loss.

Was Yan-chan perhaps a bit mentally unstable?

Yan wiped away her tears with her hand, not wanting to lose composure in front of the person she liked.

“Are you okay? Did I say something wrong?” Chen Lin asked with concern.

Yan shook her head and immediately denied it. “Big brother, you didn’t say anything wrong. I just want to ask you one more question. Can I be a little willful?”

Chen Lin actually didn’t want to agree, because he felt it would be troublesome.

Somehow, he could already feel the intangible pressure coming from the little girl—a difficult premonition.

But Yan looked at him with her tear-stained, clear eyes. Who could refuse a little girl’s whim? Besides, it was just one question. If it was too inconvenient, he could just change the subject.

“Okay, go ahead,” Chen Lin said.

“Can I really take everything you just said seriously?” Yan asked very seriously.

Chen Lin thought Yan was going to ask something important, but it was just this.

Anyway, he was just humoring the little girl, so he might as well keep humoring her. That promise was for when she grew up. By then, Yan might not even remember him.

Chen Lin really didn’t think such a childish ‘engagement’ was something either of them should take seriously.

When she grew up and if he was still single, could he force a high schooler like Yan to marry him based on this ‘engagement’?

Don’t be ridiculous. By then, not only would Yan disagree, but the police wouldn’t agree either. No one would consider this oral ‘engagement’ legally binding.

Because of that, compared to the future, it was more important not to make the cute Yan in front of him cry.

Seeing Yan cry just now had already flustered him.

So Chen Lin coughed. “Of course, you can take everything I said seriously. I have no reason to lie to you, right?” Chen Lin said to Yan with a straight face.

But inside, he was completely joking.

Still, even if it was a joke, he really couldn’t let his best friend Jin Jie know about this. Otherwise, he would definitely be given a nasty nickname like ‘Loli’s Fiancé,’ and it would spread throughout the school by afternoon.

Because he was his best friend, Chen Lin knew that Jin Jie was the kind of guy who thrived on chaos and mischief.
