Join the ServerTo protect his first kiss, Chen Lin naturally couldn’t let Yan have her way.
He turned his head, letting her lips land on his right cheek.
Yan’s soft, pink lips were tender and plump, leaving a smooth sensation where they touched.
Realizing she had only kissed his cheek, Yan pouted discontentedly. “Why did you dodge?”
“Why wouldn’t I dodge?” Chen Lin retorted immediately.
The subway station entrance was crowded with people. If anyone saw a burly high schooler like him kissing a little elementary school girl, he’d be socially ruined.
“But we’re clearly…” Yan’s tone carried a hint of grievance, “…clearly future husband and wife.”
Chen Lin was sweating profusely. How could such an easily fooled little girl exist? Was she really okay? He felt that with her personality, she’d be in great danger if she encountered a bad person.
Fortunately, she had met him—he wasn’t a gentleman with peculiar hobbies.
After thinking for a moment, Chen Lin said seriously to Yan, “That’s something for when you’re older. To show that I cherish you, can we wait until then?”
Chen Lin’s words left Yan stunned. After a long pause, she nodded dazedly. “That makes sense.”
Seeing that he had successfully persuaded Yan, Chen Lin breathed a sigh of relief.
His biggest fear right now was Yan crying again. As long as she listened to his reasoning, everything would be fine.
“See you tomorrow.” After saying this softly, Yan clutched the insulated lunch box and quickly ran into the station.
Only when Yan’s figure disappeared from his sight did Chen Lin turn and leave.
Not bothering to dwell on Yan’s behavior, Chen Lin returned home. He was a high school student—how could he take a little girl’s childish jokes seriously?
While waiting for Yan to bring him dinner, he had already finished all his homework.
Following his usual routine, after finishing homework, Chen Lin would take a shower and get ready for bed.
But since he had just eaten dinner and was a bit stuffed, his stomach still feeling a little bloated, he decided to rest for half an hour before showering.
He could, however, take his change of clothes to the bathroom in advance.
When grabbing his underwear from the closet, Chen Lin noticed something odd—it seemed he was missing one pair.
To confirm he wasn’t mistaken, he searched thoroughly.
He remembered there should be six pairs of clean underwear, but now there were only five.
Could he have miscounted?
It was really strange; there was no reason for him to be wrong.
Maybe one pair got blown away by the wind while he was drying clothes. Chen Lin placed his change of clothes on top of the washing machine and returned to the living room.
Sitting on the sofa, Chen Lin felt his pocket vibrate. He took out his phone.
It was a message from Yan on a messaging app—she had arrived home safely.
[What would you like to eat in tomorrow’s lunch box?] She then sent another message.
Chen Lin wasn’t in the mood to reply. He set his phone aside, leaned back against the sofa, and stared at the ceiling.
For some reason, he suddenly felt a bit tired from chatting with Yan.
How should he describe this feeling? Being the recipient of Yan’s special attention for no apparent reason put him under some intangible pressure.
As the saying goes, ‘One who accepts favors is short-tongued; one who takes gifts has soft hands.’
His upbringing had never allowed Chen Lin to accept benefits from others for no reason.
In his eyes, only people with bad character could comfortably accept others’ kindness without giving anything in return and without any guilt.
It was precisely because of his personal code of conduct that Chen Lin felt pressure, even unease.
Having realized this, Chen Lin picked up his phone and replied to Yan.
[Take a break tomorrow. Don’t bother bringing me lunch. I feel a bit embarrassed always putting you to trouble.]
Just seconds after he sent it, Yan immediately replied.
[Am I causing you trouble?]
Yes, exactly—it is a bit troublesome for me.
That was what Chen Lin wanted to say, but he wasn’t that unkind. If he answered like that, Yan would be very sad.
Moreover, from all angles, Yan only wanted to make lunch for him; she hadn’t done anything wrong.
So he needed to respond more tactfully.
While Chen Lin was struggling with how to reply, new messages came in rapid succession.
[Was I being willful earlier? Did I make you angry?]
[I’m sorry.]
[If you think the lunch tastes bad, I’ll work harder.]
Seeing Yan jumping to wild conclusions, Chen Lin quickly typed to prevent further misunderstanding.
[It’s not what you think. I just feel it’s too tiring for you to run back and forth like this. As a high school student, being taken care of by an elementary schooler like you is really unbecoming, isn’t it?]
Chen Lin pressed send, delivering the message.
Then, as if something occurred to him, he typed again.
[How about this weekend when you’re free? I’ll treat you to a meal at a restaurant—think of it as a thank you for the lunch boxes.]
Soon, that message was sent too.
After a long pause, Yan replied.
The top of the messaging app showed she was typing for a while, but the message that finally arrived was unusually short.
[Can we change it to watching a movie?]
After much editing, it was only eight characters, or nine with punctuation.
[Of course.]
Almost without thinking, Chen Lin replied. Since he wanted to thank her, going along with her wishes was fine.
Since Yan proposed watching a movie, she probably had one in mind.
Honestly, aside from school-organized trips to the cinema, he hadn’t bought a ticket to go alone in a long time.
The last time he went alone was in eighth grade, when his best friend Jin Jie had two tickets from a relative and asked Chen Lin to accompany him.
[Can we meet this Saturday noon to watch a movie?]
Seeing Yan’s message, Chen Lin did the math.
Today was Thursday, tomorrow Friday, Saturday the day after—he didn’t have any other plans and was free, so he replied.
[Sure.]
After a moment, two messages from Yan came through.
[Just the two of us watching a movie—that counts as a date, right~]
[I’ll look forward to it and prepare well.]
After reading, Chen Lin was a bit speechless. What kind of date was this? It was just a simple gesture of gratitude toward Yan, a return favor.
A high schooler and an elementary schooler watching a movie together—who would consider that a date? At least Chen Lin didn’t.
