Chapter 28: The Trap

Finally found Yan.

To prevent her from escaping, Chen Lin immediately took action.

Creeping up to the mailbox, he saw that Yan hadn’t noticed him at all. He made his move first, reaching out to grab her wrist, not giving her time to draw her weapon.

His hand touched Yan’s body, but what happened next dumbfounded him. Her body dissolved like foam.

Looking closer, it wasn’t really disappearing like foam. It was just a stick supporting Yan’s coat.

When he touched her coat, the delicate balance broke, and the stick and coat toppled over.

This meant the coat was bait!

He hadn’t found Yan’s whereabouts. She had deliberately tricked him into this trap.

At this moment, the danger alarm in Chen Lin’s mind screamed loudly, warning him of danger.

He had no time to think. Chen Lin immediately turned to flee.

But before he could turn around completely, he felt something cold plunge into his back from behind.

“Guilty conscience, so you’re being so cautious?” Yan’s voice came from behind him.

Realizing she had done something to him, Chen Lin spun around and tried to push her away.

But Yan’s blade sliced off four of his fingers, leaving only the thumb.

Chen Lin didn’t understand how an ordinary imported fruit knife could become a godly weapon in her hands that cut through metal.

An ordinary fruit knife shouldn’t be able to slice through bone like soft mud.

Seeing his left hand missing four fingers, the proverb ‘the fingers are linked to the heart’ came to mind. Even a tough man couldn’t bear such pain, let alone an ordinary person like Chen Lin.

“My fingers…” Chen Lin stared in horror at his mutilated hand. At the broken ends, he could clearly see bones and muscle tissue.

His body weakened, he fell backward onto the ground.

He wanted to run away now, but his trembling body couldn’t manage it.

“…Don’t kill me, don’t kill me…” Chen Lin begged as Yan approached.

But Yan showed no emotion at his pleas. Instead, she comforted him mockingly, “Don’t pretend to be the victim. I’m the one who’s hurting. I’m just sharing a part of my pain with your body.”

She whispered this into his ear, words he couldn’t understand.

Before he could react, the sharp blade slit his neck, forming a perfect cut.

It seemed to hit an artery. Blood splattered instantly, staining Yan’s front.

Chen Lin tried to speak but no sound came out. Due to blood loss, his mind went blank as if struck by a heavy mallet. His thoughts slowed.

Perhaps it was his imagination, but the air around him seemed to turn bitterly cold.

He wanted to wear a thick coat to keep warm…

He had no energy left to think. His consciousness fell into darkness, swallowed by the void.

*****

After an unknown time, Chen Lin found himself in darkness.

When he retrieved his consciousness from the darkness, a circle of bright light appeared before him. Following it, he opened his eyes.

Where was this?

After a moment of confusion, he realized he was home.

That’s right. He had just been killed by Yan.

Unconsciously, he touched his neck. Just like the last time, there was no wound.

Compared to the chaotic confusion after his first death, this time he was much calmer.

Suppressing the urge to vomit, he grabbed his phone from the pillow and checked the time.

No mistake. He had returned to the time point before the reset. Soon, it would be time for him to wake up and go see Shihan.

Maybe because of his death, his breathing was very rapid, like someone who had just finished a long run.

He knew he had no time to hesitate. He had to meet Yan and ask her something clearly.

Some things should be done sooner rather than later. If not resolved quickly, he wouldn’t be at peace.

He originally wanted to call Yan right away, but unable to suppress the nausea, he stumbled into the bathroom to vomit wildly before calling her.

He hadn’t even wiped the sour liquid from his mouth. So squatting by the toilet, he tore off some toilet paper to clean up.

The call connected quickly. Yan’s voice came through. “Hello?”

Chen Lin fell silent. He had only thought about calling her, but hadn’t considered what to say.

His mind was a bit messy; he needed time to organize his thoughts.

“Big brother, why aren’t you saying anything?” Yan’s voice came again, but Chen Lin still didn’t answer.

“Did you accidentally press the screen?” Yan muttered to herself, as if explaining the situation.

After a minute, seeing that Chen Lin still hadn’t spoken, Yan hung up.

Only a short while later, Yan called back.

On his phone screen, Yan’s name appeared. The ringtone, like a death knell, pierced his eardrums. The constant vibration made his hand shake along with it.

He had been the one to call, yet he hadn’t said a word. Now that she was calling back, he found he didn’t have the courage to answer.

He shook his head. How could this be? He couldn’t be so cowardly.

She was just a little girl. From any angle, he should have the advantage. As a high school student, what was he afraid of?
