Chapter 116: A Bishop’s Burden

In any case, that’s how it is. I, the Head Bishop, have caused trouble for everyone!

I’m truly sorry!

During the time before the adventurers had officially set off, Menglinna had already brought Jijige to the Adventurer’s Guild early to apologize to Miaomiaonia.

Looking at the two bowing before her, Miaomiaonia couldn’t help but cover her mouth with a hand and let out a light laugh before slowly speaking: “Do you know what mistake you’ve made?”

“Of course, we…”

Menglinna started to speak, but Miaomiaonia stopped her: “Let your bishop explain. After all, this only happened today.”

It was clear that Miaomiaonia was quite annoyed at having her sleep disturbed by the bell.

Though somewhat unwilling, Jijige still stepped forward and bowed her head to Miaomiaonia: “I’m truly sorry. Our church did not comply with the city management regulations of Yanan City. The unauthorized ringing of the bell caused unnecessary disturbance to the surrounding residents…”

These were words Menglinna had taught her before coming. Of course, just this superficial politeness wasn’t enough.

From behind her back, she brought out a money pouch: “Just a small token. We don’t expect your forgiveness, but at least let the church express its apology with this.”

‘Not a bad attitude, after all.’

Just as Menglinna had anticipated, Miaomiaonia accepted Jijige’s money without a moment’s hesitation, even weighing it in her hand. Though her facial expression didn’t change much, her eyes did flash with a hint of surprise.

“Alright. Considering you probably meant well, I’ll let you off this time!”

With that, Miaomiaonia signed the mediation agreement.

“Thank you so much for your understanding.”

Seeing that Miaomiaonia had finally signed the mediation agreement indicating her willingness to forgive, Menglinna let out a long sigh of relief.

At least the church wouldn’t have to close.

Back in the office at the church, Jijige slammed the door shut, then immediately collapsed onto the sofa.

“Wow, no one told me managing a church would be this troublesome! How can there be such boring people coming to complain about me? Yanan City is full of petty troublemakers!”

Having made this unambitious, complaint-filled declaration, Jijige reached for a bottle of wine, intending to take a swig.

Though she didn’t really approve of Jijige drinking during the day like this, Menglinna didn’t stop her. After all, this woman was a complete alcoholic.

She sighed and poured herself a glass as well. “Being a manager is exactly this kind of role. I suggest you don’t entertain any illusions of ease. Every order must be carefully considered before being issued; otherwise, a sudden brainwave might bring about catastrophic consequences.”

“But luckily, I have Xiao Meng here!”

Jijige downed the wine in her glass in one gulp and couldn’t help but grab Menglinna’s hand. “I don’t know how you’re so capable, but I can feel your genuine dedication to the church. How about from now on…”

Jijige’s words grew more impassioned, but at that moment, a knock sounded at the door.

Mengna felt this matter wouldn’t end so easily.

Jijige, however, ignored it and continued, “Our cooperation has been very pleasant. How about you stick with me from now on? I definitely won’t treat you badly!”

By then, the person at the door seemed to have grown impatient and directly opened the door.

Mengna, who had followed Jijige into the office, hadn’t locked the door, so Nanaya, tired of waiting outside, simply pushed it open.

“I heard everything! What are you two saying?”

Though she had only caught Jijige’s last few words, seeing the empty wine glasses beside them and Jijige reaching out to grab Mengna’s wrist, Nanaya’s mind quickly defined the scene.

‘Damn Jijige is confessing to Mengna.’

It felt like a warm current was rushing to her head—maybe it was blood speeding toward her brain. Nanaya felt herself getting angry.

‘Why am I so angry that that scumbag is confessing?’

Being highly logical, Nanaya quickly reached a conclusion: Jijige had claimed she wanted to prohibit improper relationships among the holy maidens, yet here she was doing exactly that.

She was merely outraged by the unreasonable behavior of the church’s high-ranking officials.

While Nanaya was silently fuming, Jijige was considering the situation.

Although she had been drinking, Jijige wasn’t drunk. The alcohol had merely emboldened her a bit, and she had been about to use that boldness to pull Mengna to her side.

But Nanaya’s sudden intrusion had undoubtedly ruined her plan. Without noticing that Mengna had secretly breathed a sigh of relief, Jijige let go of her hand, straightened her posture slightly, and put on a serious expression:

“Candidate, while as a holy maiden candidate you do enjoy certain special privileges within the church, I must remind you that even a holy maiden candidate entering a high-ranking bishop’s office without a special reason is not something to be encouraged.”

The threat in Jijige’s words was barely veiled, but Nanaya didn’t seem to care. In fact, she wasn’t really afraid of Jijige.

Both of them were connected to Duke Mengming’s interests, so in a sense, they should be allies in the same camp.

Nanaya wasn’t flustered: “It’s not like I don’t have a special reason.”

“Let’s hear it, then.”

Jijige was fuming inside. Not only had she been harassed by Miaoniaonia this morning, but now a holy maiden candidate was also challenging her.

If this were any other time, Jijige, as a cardinal bishop, wouldn’t bother to argue with her. But Nanaya had happened to pick a moment when Jijige truly wanted to lash out.

Jijige had made up her mind: if Nanaya’s reason wasn’t valid, she would seize the opportunity to give her a thorough scolding.

Nanaya wasn’t afraid either. She put her hands on her hips and looked at Jijige. “Previously, Bishop Jijige said that improper relationships between women are forbidden in the church. Now I want to report that someone is engaging in such improper relationships. I think that should be a valid reason, right?”

This was something Jijige had said herself. If she denied it now, where would that leave her dignity?

So she had no choice but to pinch her nose and say, “Go ahead, then.”

“It’s you, Bishop Jijige.” Nanaya pointed directly at Jijige’s nose. “Calling a female subordinate alone into such a private office and drinking with her— I’d say this isn’t just improper relationships; this is outright using your position to take advantage of a subordinate!”

“Ha, me taking advantage?”

Jijige instinctively wanted to refute, but after a quick mental review, she felt that from an outsider’s perspective, Nanaya wasn’t entirely wrong. So she changed her approach.

“You’re being too subjective, aren’t you? The person in question is right here, and she hasn’t said anything!”

With that, Jijige turned to look at Menglinna beside her. “I think you can prove I haven’t taken advantage of you, right?”

Both their gazes focused on Menglinna. Sensing something amiss, Menglinna thought for a moment before choosing to tell the truth: “So far, Bishop Jijige has not done anything inappropriate to me.”

Nanaya naturally couldn’t accept that. She looked at Menglinna with some frustration: “You mean even after she said that, it wasn’t harassment?”

“That?” Menglinna pondered for a moment before realizing Nanaya was still referring to Jijige’s strange words. “She was just trying to recruit me for work.”

For some reason, Nanaya felt a surge of anger at Menglinna’s response, like frustration at someone who wouldn’t stand up for themselves. “Fine…”

“You heard that yourself, didn’t you? The person herself admits there was no harassment!”

Jijige, now at an advantage, couldn’t help but show a smug expression.

“Fine. Just wait.”

With that, Nanaya left the office. Though Jijige was irritated by Nanaya’s casual comings and goings, she decided, as a bishop, to maintain her composure and let her go.

Watching the door slam shut, Menglinna felt in her heart that this matter wouldn’t end so easily.

She looked nervously at Jijige: “Bishop Jijige?”

“Hmm? Are you going to accept my request?”

“No, you misunderstand.” Menglinna waved her hand dismissively, changing the subject. “Um, I think you should revise that regulation about improper relationships between women.”

“Oh, that…” Jijige mused for a moment, then nodded. “Maybe you have a point. That holy maiden candidate’s argument just now was indeed valid.”

Undoubtedly, she had only dodged Nanaya’s accusation of taking advantage of a subordinate. But if Nanaya insisted on pursuing the charge of improper relationships, she really wouldn’t have much to say in her defense.

“After thinking about it, this regulation could easily become a catch-all charge. How about we abolish it? What do you think?”

Meeting Jijige’s inquiring gaze, Menglinna nodded. “That would be more practical.”

Since Menglinna thought so too, Jijige simply said, “Then it’s settled!”

Menglinna was speechless. ‘So you just wanted to use me as a workhorse. Even though I didn’t agree to work for you, you sure don’t treat me like an outsider.’

But she didn’t say much and began making arrangements.

***

Lunchtime.

Because Menglinna had announced the repeal of the ban on improper relationships between women, the nuns around were visibly more lively. Laughter and chatter occasionally echoed from the dining hall.

A meal tray suddenly appeared in front of her. Menglinna looked up, and sure enough, it was Nanaya.

The holy maiden candidate sat down opposite her as if it were the most natural thing and started eating.

“Are you working for her now?”

Even while eating, she didn’t forget to chat—or rather, Nanaya was more accustomed to discussing such topics over meals.

“She” clearly referred to Jijige. Menglinna had no choice but to nod: “After all, she’s the direct manager of this church.”

Nanaya raised her knife and fork to cut a small piece of the steak in front of her: “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

Seeing her slightly excessive cutting motion, Menglinna suddenly realized that the girl in front of her seemed to be in a bad mood, so she carefully asked, “Are you bothered by it?”

“A little bit.”

Unexpectedly, Nanaya admitted it quite readily, which left Menglinna unsure how to respond.

‘Between the two of them, they’re just ordinary teammates now, right? Interfering in each other’s private matters like this somehow feels off.’

Thinking this, Menglinna couldn’t help but shrink her neck. “She and I are just doing official business. I’m not acting out of personal feelings or anything…”

‘The more you explain, the worse it gets.’ Menglinna didn’t know why, but even though she hadn’t done anything to wrong Nanaya, she now felt like a husband suspected of infidelity earnestly confessing his whereabouts from last night to his wife.

“Even if that’s the case,” Nanaya repeated with emphasis, “even if that’s the case, I still feel very unhappy—because you’re helping her like this!”

“I’m just…”

Menglinna wanted to say more, but someone nearby suddenly coughed loudly.

Both of them looked up. It was Bishop Jijige, carrying a meal tray. Seeing them apparently arguing, she walked over and sat down next to Menglinna.

“What are you arguing about?”

Though it was just an ordinary inquiry, Jijige’s tone carried an air of superiority, like a mother asking about a quarrel between sisters, as if she were a referee naturally a step above them.

“It’s none of your business.” Nanaya barely glanced at her before averting her eyes. “This is a private matter between us. Please mind your own business, okay?”

Feeling a strange hostility from Nanaya, Jijige became all the more unwilling to back down. She was stubborn by nature. “As a mutual friend, can’t I even listen to what you two have to say?” She blinked and chose to compromise, “If you’re so averse to me, then I suppose there’s nothing I can do.”

Though she wanted to tell Jijige that she had never considered her a friend, recalling the lighter incident, Nanaya had indeed benefited from her. Not wanting to cause too much friction, she reluctantly nodded: “I’m just dissatisfied with your relationship with that scumbag.”
