Having pretended to examine the board for quite a while, Shiya casually ripped off a page and tossed it in front of Miaomiaonia.
“Hey, Shiya, since when are you the one calling the shots?” An adventurer familiar with Shiya’s team asked, puzzled. “Where’s your team’s Dean? Doesn’t she usually pick the commissions?”
“Ah, Teacher Meng isn’t feeling well today.” As Shiya explained, a cloaked figure at the back of the team pulled down their hood, offering the adventurer an apologetic smile.
Though the adventurer couldn’t fathom why the Dean would smile at him, he didn’t dwell on it. Instead, he teased, “If you’re not feeling well, why not take the day off and rest?”
“Got to earn money,” Shiya urged Miaomiaonia deliberately. “Hurry it up.”
“Of course!” Miaomiaonia handed over a commission document she had prepared in advance, at the same time noting down the name of the adventurer beside her.
With that, the four-person team’s alibi was set.
Shiya and Kaili left the guild with two substitutes disguised as Menglinna and Nanaya. They would, of course, carry out the commission—right under everyone’s noses, pushing carts in the factory where all the workers would see them.
As for the real Menglinna and Nanaya, they were…
Far from the southern outskirts, west beyond the forest, lay a vast desert. Beyond that desert were the settlements of beastmen.
Rumors said a cannibal tribe dwelled in the desert’s heart, but that was surely nonsense. Even the caravans heading to the beastmen territories rarely took this route. If cannibals truly existed, they’d have starved long ago.
A little deeper into the desert, near an oasis, stood an abandoned hunter’s workshop.
Legend said the city of Yanan was buried beneath this desert. Yet for some reason, this old-era workshop hadn’t been swallowed by the sands along with the city. Instead, it stood quietly by the oasis, as if offering a temporary resting place for passing travelers.
“I wonder how they found this place.”
Quyi held a rope, walking slowly at the desert’s edge. The workshop’s outline gradually emerged in the distance. Behind him, Yixing, though dissatisfied, could only follow.
Perhaps sensing her displeasure, he turned and patted Yixing’s head. “Hungry? Don’t worry, I’ll give you a feast soon!”
Menglinna and Nanaya were already inside the workshop. Miaomiaonia had chosen this place for them. As a veteran receptionist at the adventurer’s guild, her familiarity with the surrounding area far exceeded that of those two out-of-towners, Menglinna and Nanaya.
The abandoned workshop’s desert location was remote; hardly anyone passed by. It perfectly suited Menglinna and Nanaya’s requirements.
Though Quyi had been surprised when the location was proposed, on second thought, since Menglinna didn’t want to make a public scene, choosing such an isolated spot was understandable. More importantly, in such a secluded place, they could play bigger, couldn’t they?
“This place doesn’t look like it’s been abandoned long. No dust, and even the weapons aren’t rusted.”
As a hunter’s workshop, it naturally contained many oddly shaped weapons. Most were broken, and though the blades weren’t rusted, they were hard to use—unless one was willing to grip the blade and risk injury.
Nanaya kicked a discarded weapon aside. “No big deal. In this dry desert, lack of water keeps the weapons from rusting.”
“Alright.” Unable to think of a counterargument, Menglinna lowered her head and checked her own waist weapon again.
If circumstances allowed, they would kill that pair of bastards the moment they walked through the door.
Knock, knock, knock. The sound of knocking came, followed by Quyi’s frivolous voice: “I’m here, my two little darlings. Miss me?”
The two women were about to strike immediately, but when they saw Yixing behind him, they put their weapons away.
The rope in Quyi’s hand extended naturally behind him, tightly binding Yixing, who was like a beast.
Calling her “like a beast” rather than a beast because, although Yixing was now covered in fur, walking on all fours like an animal, and drooling with her tongue out like a dog, she still retained one feature utterly un-beastly. On her huge, werewolf-like head were attached multiple eyes—dense as compound eyes of an insect, a sight that caused physical revulsion.
Faced with such a monster, the two women couldn’t help but step back simultaneously.
“Sorry, did my girlfriend scare you two?” Quyi wore a malicious grin. “She looks dangerous, but she won’t hurt anyone—if you two can… satisfy her.”
“Tsk.”
A direct confrontation might allow them to kill him with their firepower, but the intense battle traces would leave evidence.
“I know this sounds low, but I’ve already investigated you two,” Quyi said, pulling out two files from behind. “Stolen from the adventurer’s guild. You two seem tough, but you only know support magic. Your actual attack power is zero, isn’t it?”
As he spoke, he stepped forward, pulled the dagger from Menglinna’s waist, and tossed it aside. As for the flame giant whip at Nanaya’s waist, he just glanced at it and gave a meaningful smile.
Of course, their files had been tampered with by Miaomiaonia to fool Quyi. But since they had gone this far, the act had to be convincing.
“What do you want?” Menglinna’s eyes followed the dagger pulled from her waist until he kicked it out the window.
“I already told you. Go satisfy her.” Pointing at the beast-like Yixing behind him, Quyi smiled.
“You bastard,” Nanaya gritted her teeth. “Do you know who you’re talking to?”
“A candidate who hasn’t become a saint yet, and a dean of a church with only two people?” Quyi shook his head. “Don’t be so full of yourselves. Here, my word is law.”
