Relying on their well-trained personal guard, the two managed to hold out until Jijige arrived.
With the addition of high-level combat power, the Flame Evil God was successfully defeated once again.
Nanaya felt a flash of light before her eyes, and she was back in the real world.
‘Did I pass?’
Looking down, the candle beside her still had a long stub left. She hadn’t been in the illusion for long. The ritual array drawn with Saint’s Blood at her feet had vanished without a trace, its magic presumably exhausted.
Come to think of it, she had been an Inquisitor in that illusion. It seemed there really was something connecting her to the Trial Warrior profession.
Nanaya looked down and realized she was still holding the Raven’s Beak Warhammer from the illusion.
Moreover, Nanaya, who had always struggled with magic, could now more easily sense the traces of mana flowing through the air. Although it was still difficult for her to manipulate this mana, for a Trial Warrior pursuing heretical mages, this ability was invaluable.
For instance, she could smell a faint magical aura left by the residual array—it felt similar to her own, as if the mana had been completely assimilated into her body. There was also a familiar water-element mana.
Wondering why water-element mana would be here, Nanaya looked up and saw Menglinna’s face appear in the doorway. Seeing that she had been noticed, Menglinna stopped hiding and walked straight into the room. “Looks like your class change was successful?”
“Yes,” Nanaya nodded. “I am now an official Trial Warrior.”
“Congratulations,” Menglinna said dryly, her expression still far from pleasant. “So let’s talk business—how do we drive that damned Flame Evil God out?”
The Flame Evil God Fram suddenly popped out. “I can hear you!”
“Hearing me doesn’t help,” Menglinna clearly didn’t take him seriously. “Either leave Nanaya’s body, or I’ll physically eliminate you. Your choice.”
“Ha, just a mere mortal?”
As a god, Fram was not easily intimidated by a mortal’s threat.
“Ah, I’ve been too gentle with you. If I don’t make you suffer a little, you’ll never learn.”
Saying this, Menglinna stepped forward and pressed against Nanaya. She sat directly on Nanaya’s thighs, clamped Nanaya’s arm under her armpit, and grabbed the Flame Evil God’s face with both hands.
Caught off guard, Fram’s eyes showed terror. He sensed something wrong with this human. “Hey, what are you doing!”
“A wild god who got kicked aside like a stray dog, and yet you put on airs? If I don’t teach you a lesson, you’ll think you’re actually a god.”
With that, Menglinna pulled her hands apart, and a surge of water-element mana poured in.
“No, no! I was wrong!” Fram grew more terrified as his existence weakened from the water mana. “I was too arrogant before; now I know I was wrong!”
“Hmph.”
Menglinna chuckled softly and got off Nanaya’s lap.
Frankly, Menglinna’s actions had been quite bold, catching even Nanaya off guard.
Sitting on her lap, then clamping her arm to channel mana—even though it wasn’t directed at her, Nanaya still blushed a little.
That posture just now had essentially held Menglinna in her arms.
With the Flame Evil God now cowed, Nanaya couldn’t help feeling a bit regretful.
She wanted to hold her more, especially since the other had willingly come into her arms.
“Um…” Seeing that Menglinna seemed ready to go all out, Nanaya spoke up. “Can we not eliminate him?”
“Not eliminate him?” Menglinna looked puzzled. “Are you awake? He’s the Flame Evil God. Think about the fate of those fire thieves and fire giants. Can you guarantee they acted entirely without his influence?”
Unlike Menglinna’s insistence on killing the Flame Evil God, Nanaya chose to defend him. “But he did help us. Back at Buchen City, he lent me his power to get us out of danger. Later, he helped me create those holy marks… I think he’s a good god!”
Menglinna didn’t bother arguing. She simply said, “I don’t care if he’s good or not, but he has to leave Nanaya’s body. That’s non-negotiable.”
“But I can’t just leave,” Fram said pitifully. “I need a host, unless you’re willing to create a new divine body for me.”
“Don’t even think about it!”
“If we give him a divine body, he’ll probably start setting fires everywhere the next day.”
“Then what do you suggest we do!”
The two reached an impasse, and because of Nanaya’s wishes, Menglinna—though eager to eliminate the Flame Evil God—didn’t want to make things too tense.
“How about this?” Menglinna suddenly had an idea. “Let’s ask the Goddess. She is a wise deity and will surely have a solution. Besides, since it involves a god, she won’t stand idly by.”
“What do you mean by ‘wise deity’?” Fram grumbled. “Are you implying some god is stupid?”
Menglinna retorted seriously, “Don’t start with Fram!”
Ignoring their exchange, Nanaya nodded. “Indeed, asking the Goddess as a believer isn’t a bad idea.”
Although she had kept the Flame Evil God for a while, the Goddess probably wouldn’t mind such trivial matters—probably?
Without further ado, the two went to Nanaya’s desk. On a nearby bookshelf stood a small statue of the Goddess of Law. Though the size of a figurine, it was still a sacred icon, and communicating with it could reach the Goddess.
“Great Goddess, your loyal followers have encountered a problem and urgently need your help…”
Facing the Goddess figurine, Menglinna rambled on for a while, adding several embellishments to badmouth the Flame Evil God.
True to the saying that matters concerning gods are important, the stone figurine actually moved. “I’ve heard your problem.”
“Goddess!”
Seeing the Goddess manifest, the two quickly bowed.
“No need to be so formal. I’m actually a very approachable good god!”
The two exchanged glances and stood up. She could indeed be considered a good god, but it was hard to imagine someone who specialized in exploiting legal loopholes being truly approachable.
“Alright, your problem is actually easy to solve.” After a moment’s thought, the Goddess made her ruling. “Purify him thoroughly, then expel him from little Nanaya’s body. After that, he’ll come back with me to the divine realm to be my little maid.”
“Huh?” Fram’s eyes widened. “I refuse!”
The stone Goddess closed her eyes. “Then eliminate him, little Meng.”
“Hey, no, no!” Seeing Menglinna actually approaching, Fram immediately backed down. “I’ll be a maid or a pet dog, anything, just don’t kill me!”
The Goddess nodded in satisfaction. “That’s more like it!”
“But,” Menglinna looked troubled, “how do I purify him? After all, he’s a deity…”
“Oh, you’re hopeless. I’ll grant you my divine power.”
With that, the Goddess figurine pointed a finger, and a beam of light shot straight into Menglinna’s forehead.
‘So this is the power of purification!’
Having received the Goddess’s power, even the usually composed Menglinna smiled like a child.
Though a bit envious, Nanaya wanted to resolve this quickly. “So, what do we do?”
“Just purify him simply. Like ‘pew pew pew,’ shoot the divine power into him!”
The Goddess made it sound easy, but obviously, executing it wasn’t hard.
‘Brute force will do, right?’
Thinking this, Menglinna slowly approached Fram. “Sorry for the intrusion.”
The Flame Evil God looked scared. “Can I leave without purification?”
“Absolutely not!”
Saying so, Menglinna grabbed Fram’s head with both hands, and with a double thunderclap, she channeled the purifying power directly into his head.
“Aaaah—my head is going to explode!!!”
The Goddess clapped in delight. “That’s it! This is exactly what I wanted to see!”
Menglinna and Nanaya pretended not to hear and just gritted their teeth and bore it.
“Damned Goddess, I’m going to screw you— wait, no, no, I’m wrong! Don’t zap me anymore! If you keep this up, my head will turn weird, and I’ll become a dumb, obedient good god…”
Fram’s words grew more incoherent. Menglinna didn’t dare look at anyone else’s expressions and simply increased the output.
Why had such a simple purification turned out like this?
The Goddess rubbed her hands together like a fly, clearly impatient. “Alright, alright, he’s a good god now. Hand him over to me; I can’t wait to go back and… influence him!”
Faced with such an excited Goddess, Nanaya felt her worldview shatter. “Goddess, don’t you think you should maintain your image?”
“Eh, fine. Then I’ll just take him away.”
The dismissed Goddess waved her hand, and in an instant, Fram was sucked into the sky.
The figurine returned to its original state, but before leaving, the Goddess left one last message:
“Oh, by the way, there’s still a trace of the Flame Evil God’s divine power left in Nanaya’s body. Make sure you clean it up for her!”
