Chapter 121: A Suspicious Affection

“Wait a minute!” Nanaya closed her notebook. “What did you just say?”

Menglinna rubbed her nose sheepishly. “Do you think Bishop Jijige likes me?”

Nanaya put the notebook aside and sat up straight, instantly alert. “Why would you ask that? Has Jijige done something to you recently?”

Menglinna looked up at Nanaya. Why was she reacting so strongly?

She cautiously asked back, “Does it matter to you?”

“Of course it matters!” As soon as the words left her mouth, Nanaya realized she had slipped up. She added, “After all, that woman is really annoying!”

“Really? But I think she’s pretty nice.”

Although the previous Nanaya hadn’t gotten along with Jijige either, Menglinna still felt neither of them was a bad person.

“You’ve been completely fooled by her appearance!” Nanaya couldn’t help reaching out and grabbing Menglinna’s ear. “That woman is not a good person. For her own selfish desires, she wouldn’t hesitate to trample the sanctity of the church underfoot.”

“Isn’t that a bit exaggerated?” Menglinna pouted dismissively, clearly unconvinced by Nanaya’s words.

Knowing that empty talk wouldn’t persuade Menglinna, Nanaya changed the subject. “So why do you think she likes you?”

Ah, right. She had come to ask Nanaya’s opinion, but almost let her lead the conversation astray.

Menglinna coughed and answered hesitantly, “This might sound narcissistic, but don’t you think she’s been seeking me out a lot lately?”

Nanaya replied expressionlessly, “s*ave owners also like to chat with their hardest-working oxen and horses.”

Menglinna couldn’t help but cover her forehead. “But I feel like there’s something different about her. Have you heard the saying that when someone likes you, they smile when they see you?”

“Thanks, no, I haven’t,” Nanaya shook her head. “It could just be politeness.”

“But she’s a girl!”

“Ninety-nine percent of women in this world are girls,” Nanaya waved her hand casually. “That’s nothing special.”

“And she said she really likes girls like me…”

“That’s nothing special. Ninety-nine percent of women in this world like…” Nanaya stopped mid-sentence, realizing what she was saying. “Wait, what did you just say?”

Menglinna didn’t answer. She just blinked at Nanaya. “Do you like me?”

“Crazy!”

Unfortunately, she got a scolding in return.

“Hey, didn’t you say ninety-nine percent of women…”

Nanaya immediately retracted her earlier statement. “I never said that!”

“Aw, what’s with that!” Menglinna pouted in disappointment. “You don’t keep your word!”

“I think you’re asking for a beating!” Nanaya reached out and pinched Menglinna’s cheek.

“Sorry!”

Afraid of pain, Menglinna chose to back down.

After pinching her a bit to relieve her mood, Nanaya asked, “So how did you answer that woman?”

Although she had no interest in the woman’s personal feelings, she still wanted to know. After all, it wouldn’t be good if she accidentally stole someone else’s crush.

Nanaya explained this to herself.

“I just brushed it off!”

“How exactly?”

“I said I like myself too, and then she stopped,” Menglinna scratched her head sheepishly. “She also said she wanted to recruit me into the Natural School as her successor.”

Hearing this, Nanaya clenched her fists. “Absolutely not!”

Faced with Nanaya’s sudden assertiveness, Menglinna chose to be cautious. “I really didn’t agree.”

“Good,” Nanaya nodded, reaching out to pat Menglinna’s head. “That woman is very hypocritical. I think her liking you and wanting to recruit you into the Natural School are all fake. Her real aim is to take you for research.”

“Research!” Menglinna was startled. “What’s there to research about me?”

Nanaya then dropped a bombshell that shattered Menglinna’s composure. “Aren’t you able to unleash B-rank divine spells with D-rank strength? Isn’t that enough to research?”

“Huh? What are you talking about? Did I do something like that?”

Struck at her weak point, Menglinna reacted like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.

Her ability to use B-rank divine spells early relied on her previous life’s knowledge of divine arts. If anyone found out…

Whether it was Nanaya or Jijige, she absolutely couldn’t let it slip.

Nanaya revealed a playful smile. “Oh my, you don’t really think I believe your lies, do you? When we killed that water spirit earlier, didn’t you use the B-rank divine spell Lightning Pillar?”

“I didn’t…”

“Don’t rush to deny it,” Nanaya pressed down on Menglinna. “Of course, this is just a guess. Maybe some unknown archbishop happened to pass by and kindly cast a divine spell to save me. But for some reason, they didn’t show themselves.”

“However, that archbishop was stingy and used cheap goods, and even the Holy Emblem exploded.”

At this point, Nanaya deliberately paused.

A chill ran down Menglinna’s spine. “No, you’re just making this up…”

“Of course, I’m just speculating. It’s not like I have any evidence!”

Nanaya spread her hands, as if proving she was harmless.

But the more she did so, the more Menglinna felt threatened. “You can’t…”

“Of course I won’t. But you should understand—keep your distance from that woman,” Nanaya laughed heartily. “You don’t want the Inquisition to find out about your special constitution, do you?”

It was a whisper like a demon’s, yet Menglinna had no choice but to nod in agreement.

“By the way, you’re free tomorrow, right?” Nanaya put the notebook back on the shelf. “It’s been a while since I’ve been an adventurer. Let’s go on an adventure tomorrow.”

This wasn’t a question; it was an order.

Menglinna collapsed weakly onto the sofa back. Before losing all her strength, she answered, “Okay.”

“See you tomorrow.”

Without another word, Nanaya left Menglinna’s room. It was getting late, but it wasn’t time to rest yet.

Leaving Menglinna’s room, Nanaya headed straight for Jijige’s office. As she walked, she pondered her conversation with Menglinna.

Even without Menglinna saying it, Nanaya had long realized that Jijige held different feelings for Menglinna. She just hadn’t taken it seriously before.
