Chapter 135: The Upper Being Proposition

The day for the hospital checkup had arrived.

Yushi set down the detector in her hand. “Congratulations. The vampire factor in your body has now been reduced to one-thousandth of its original level.”

Menglinna smiled. “So does that mean I’m almost cured?”

Yushi shrugged. “I’m not sure. This is my first time handling such a case. There’s only a theoretical possibility of a cure.”

Menglinna pouted. “At least there’s a theoretical possibility.”

“I’ve done everything I can,” Yushi said, putting down her notebook. “By the way, have you ever heard of ‘Upper Beings’?”

“Upper Beings?” Nanaya, who was nearby, looked puzzled. “Are you talking about deities?”

Aside from the universally worshipped Goddess of Law, most deities were wild gods like the Flame Evil God. The term ‘Upper Beings’ came from the Yanan people, referring to high-ranking races superior to humans in every aspect. However, since no actual examples existed, even their existence remained uncertain. Many people simply regarded them as urban legends, much like the Beast.

“Deities? If we must say, they are all races more advanced than us humans.” Yushi did not refute Nanaya’s statement; she merely compared the two.

Menglinna honestly shook her head. “If you’re talking about legitimate Upper Beings, we really know very little.”

“What if I told you we’ve found a way for humans to ascend to the position of Upper Beings?” As Yushi suddenly brought this up, a flicker of unease crossed Menglinna’s heart.

“That shouldn’t have anything to do with us, right?” Having already obtained the potion, Menglinna was somewhat eager to make a quick exit.

Yushi just smiled. “This technology is still under research, but if you fail to suppress the vampire transformation and absolutely don’t want to become a vampire, you could try this. Becoming an Upper Being is better than turning into a vampire, isn’t it?”

Seeing Yushi’s calm smile, Menglinna couldn’t help shivering. “I don’t want to be a guinea pig.”

“That’s a pity then.” Having failed to persuade her, the three quickly ended their conversation.

Yesterday, Jijige had announced her departure for the Central Church, and now the church was once again under the management of Nanaya and Menglinna. The only difference was that the two now had a bunch of staff under them.

Menglinna sat upright in her office, with a tall stack of documents on her desk. At that moment, her head was resting on the papers, as she dozed off while shirking work.

‘What a joke. She had already done this kind of work for a lifetime; if she had to do it again, wouldn’t her rebirth be wasted?’

The little nun Anna was in charge of cleaning the church as usual. At first, seeing the pile of documents on Menglinna’s desk, she sighed inwardly at the dean’s misfortune. But she never expected to see Menglinna sleeping right there.

“I never expected you to be this kind of dean.”

Startled awake by Little Anna’s shout, Menglinna wiped the drool from the corner of her mouth. “Ah, it’s Little Anna. Sit down and have some tea first.”

Without waiting for a refusal, Menglinna reached for the teapot on the table and poured Anna a cup.

A bit flattered, Little Anna accepted the tea, then slowly said, “Even if you treat me like this, I won’t go easy on you. I have evidence of your laziness now!”

Menglinna yawned. “Then go ahead and report me. I don’t want to continue anyway.”

Little Anna slightly retracted her arrogant expression. “As always, you dislike your job, Dean. Yet your position in the church isn’t low at all.”

“I do dislike it.” Menglinna shrugged. She really didn’t want to continue, since in her previous life she had died in this very position. If possible, she wanted to live a relatively peaceful life this time around. She wanted to find a loli wife and live a shamelessly happy life, making up for all the regrets of her past life.

“Speaking of which, Miss Nanaya isn’t clinging to you today, Dean!” When Nanaya was mentioned, a spark of gossip lit up Little Anna’s eyes.

“What do you mean by ‘clinging’? That makes us sound like a pair of clueless lovers with no sense of occasion.” How irritating. She didn’t want to admit the relationship between them, but she couldn’t deny Little Anna’s gossip at all.

Seeing Dean Menglinna unconsciously twirling her hair around her finger out of frustration, Little Anna couldn’t help smiling. “Your thoughts are just too easy to read.”

“Did something happen? Are you two getting tired of each other?” Faced with Little Anna’s wild guesses, Menglinna couldn’t help panicking. “What nonsense are you saying? What do you mean by ‘tired’?”

“Then what is the problem?” Little Anna’s eyes practically sparkled. “Actually, I’m a famous expert on relationships!”

“Really?”

“Why would I lie to you?”

Menglinna, of course, hadn’t encountered any relationship problems. She had known from the start what she needed to do: simply correct Nanaya’s mistaken notions. That Nanaya’s emotional guidance towards her was merely a mistaken perception formed due to some influence in childhood—definitely not love.

“In that case, let me ask you,” Menglinna paused, then decided to speak. “If you suspect your girlfriend doesn’t love you anymore, what method would you use to find out?”

‘Better ask Little Anna for advice. Use the method she teaches to prove that Nanaya’s feelings aren’t true love.’

Although the question sounded dangerous, considering Miss Nanaya’s behavior, Little Anna didn’t believe at all that Nanaya had cheated or anything.

“You’re feeling insecure in this relationship, Dean?”

“No… well, maybe?” Menglinna suddenly felt flustered. She found herself unsure what attitude to take when chatting with Little Anna.

“It seems the Dean is a tsundere who says one thing but means another!”

“I am not!”

“Alright, enough joking. As for the method you want…” Little Anna’s expression turned serious. “Just do it once.”

“Oh… wait, what did you say?” Hearing such words from Little Anna’s mouth, Menglinna couldn’t believe it.

“As they say, ‘When beauty fades, love wanes.’ So just do some lewd things and you’ll know her attitude toward you.”

Little Anna’s expression was surprisingly serious when spouting such nonsense.

“Is that the meaning of that saying? And in your eyes, am I the kind of woman who uses my looks to seduce others?” Menglinna grew angrier as she spoke, nearly slamming the table.

Realizing she had gone a bit too far, Little Anna quickly waved her hands and explained, “No, no. I was just joking. Of course, if you really want to know, I have other methods…”
