Chapter 102: The Sandworm Emerges

Yixing—no, the beast that once bore the name Yixing—was now stretching out its tongue, saliva slowly dripping onto the ground.

It was impossible to tell whether the drool came from hunger or some other desire. Faced with a beast like this, any normal person would surely lose their mind, wouldn’t they?

“Don’t look directly into its eyes,” the Flame Evil God warned. “That creature’s eyes are a curse; if you stare too long, you might go mad.”

Nanaya averted her gaze and looked at Menglinna beside her.

As for the veteran bishop, Menglinna had encountered many heretics and naturally sensed something was wrong without needing a reminder.

Their eyes met, as if they had reached some unspoken understanding.

“I told you, she needs to be satisfied,” Quyi’s somewhat displeased voice sounded from behind. “Just standing around watching from a distance won’t satisfy her. Don’t keep us waiting too long.”

It was pure coercion.

With no opportunity to strike, Menglinna had no choice but to do as Quyi said.

Since it was a beast-like existence, she had to treat it with caution.

Menglinna crouched down. It was said that crouching made it so the beast didn’t have to look up at you; the visual disparity would make them subconsciously perceive humans as less threatening, and it could reduce the hostility caused by the size difference.

Unable to see any trace of human rationality left in Yixing, Menglinna tentatively spoke: ‘Good doggy?’

Behind her, Quyi clapped his hands in satisfaction. “That’s right, treat this one like a dog!”

As if agreeing with the comment, Yixing actually allowed Menglinna to slowly approach.

‘If I’m supposed to treat her like a dog, then I should pet her, right?’

“Good doggy, nice doggy,” Menglinna murmured while reaching out to stroke the fur on its back.

Yixing turned its canine head and snapped at Menglinna’s petting hand. Luckily, Menglinna had been prepared and pulled her hand back just in time; otherwise, she would have been bitten.

“She just wants to play with you!” Quyi explained loudly from behind.

“Hmph.” Nanaya also slowly approached, and the two of them flanked Yixing on either side.

‘Could I kill this monster in one blow?’ Nanaya stared at Yixing’s head, beginning to consider the possibility of a surprise attack.

But then the ground suddenly began to tremble, and the three people and one dog present all staggered.

“What’s happening?” Quyi steadied himself and looked at the other two. But Nanaya and Menglinna couldn’t keep their balance; their feet slipped and they fell into a pile of discarded weapons, their skin scratched by blades, drawing a little blood.

No, it wasn’t those two who did it. If they had caused this, they wouldn’t be in such a mess.

Quyi turned his gaze to the window. At some point, the view outside had become pitch black, nothing visible. Was it poor visibility due to a sandstorm? No.

As Quyi approached the window, he gradually realized a terrifying truth: the reason it was dark outside was simple—something was completely blocking the light.

The next second, a bolt of lightning blasted through the workshop wall, and a giant sandworm appeared before them. There was no doubt it was the one blocking the light and breaking through the wall.

What kind of monster was this? What kind of monster was this? Stunned for a moment, Quyi slowly stepped back.

At that moment, Menglinna and Nanaya were also dazed. Although they had planned to frame the two deaths on the mysterious creatures of the desert (cannibals), having such a giant sandworm appear before them was a bit beyond their expectations.

The two fallen on the ground exchanged a glance and made a decision: run. They didn’t necessarily have to complete the assassination this time; the key point was that this sandworm in front of them didn’t look like something to mess with.

Realizing they seemed ready to flee, Quyi couldn’t help but shout, “Hey, you two!” However, his answer came from Menglinna’s holy bell—a simple water cannon struck him. Though the damage wasn’t great, it slammed him solidly to the ground.

Because of his shout, the sandworm’s attention focused on Quyi. “Damn it!” Quyi yelled, then also fell to the ground, his flesh rapidly bursting open. Soon, like Yixing, he transformed into a strange creature with compound eyes.

The sandworm didn’t care. Since these two little bugs in front were so noisy, it would just eat them. Menglinna and Nanaya scrambled out of the workshop ruins just in time to see the sandworm spit out another bolt of lightning. But this time, there was no wall to block it; the lightning struck Quyi’s body directly, and he collapsed.

As for Yixing, the moment she saw the sandworm, her biological instincts froze her in terror, too scared to move. In the end, the sandworm bit her alive and swallowed her whole.

Nanaya raised her camera and captured the moment the sandworm devoured Quyi and Yixing. ‘With this, we can have evidence of their elimination… With this, we can submit the evidence of their elimination to Miaomiaonia, right?’

“We’ll talk about that later,” Menglinna grabbed Nanaya’s hand. “Right now, the most important thing is not to get eaten by that sandworm.”

She had intended to grab Nanaya’s hand and quickly leave, but on second thought, in the desert, could she outrun a sandworm that burrowed directly through the ground? Fortunately, the sandworm seemed a bit full after eating Quyi and Yixing, so it actually didn’t chase them.

Just then, two extremely long ropes shot out from underground, wrapping around the sandworm’s neck. Menglinna looked closely and saw a group of undead soldiers emerging from the ground. They tightened the ropes around the sandworm’s neck, forcing it to regurgitate the food it had just swallowed. Then they devoured the remains, lying directly on the desert ground in an unseemly manner as they ate.

This gave Menglinna two pieces of information. First, the two were indeed dead. The assassination targets had died in an accident beyond their plan—whether it was a killer’s intuition or sheer luck, she didn’t know. Second, this sandworm seemed to be enslaved by those undead soldiers.

After all, they ate people too, so calling the undead soldiers cannibals wasn’t wrong. Menglinna let her mind wander as she waited for an opportunity. Escaping from a sandworm’s pursuit in the desert wasn’t easy, especially since the sandworm had just been forced to regurgitate its meal and was now hungry again. From that perspective, the undead soldiers pulling on the ropes around the sandworm’s neck were actually helping the two of them.
