Chapter 91: The Assassination Contract

Since Menglinna had already signed the agreement, the others followed suit.

Although the penalties were severe, there would be no issues as long as they didn’t disclose anything.

Miaomiaonia carefully checked everyone’s signatures, then placed the four agreements into a document bag before looking at the group.

“As I said earlier, it’s out of trust in all of you that I’m entrusting this task to you. On one hand, I believe you won’t easily leak these secrets; on the other, your strength is just right for resolving this incident.”

Shiya, being impulsive, couldn’t help but ask, “So what exactly is the commission?”

“Don’t rush, I’m getting to it,” Miaomiaonia said as she turned on a projector, and an image of a massive beast appeared on the screen. “Does everyone recognize this?”

Menglinna nodded. She had used this as an excuse to sneak into Nanaya’s room just yesterday, so how could she not know?

Shiya and Kaili also nodded. After all, the urban legend of Yanan becoming reality had caused quite a stir.

Shiya couldn’t help but ask, “So you need us to hunt that beast?”

Miaomiaonia nodded, then shook her head. “Yes and no. This commission isn’t a typical adventurer quest—it’s an assassination mission.”

“An assassination mission?”

At these words, everyone fell into silence.

Quests like monster subjugation or caravan escort—those that mainly involved fighting monsters—were standard adventurer commissions. Although they might occasionally encounter human bandits during escort missions, adventurers primarily fought monsters; their main targets weren’t human.

Assassination missions, on the other hand, targeted humans. Since murder was illegal, ordinary adventurers didn’t get involved in such tasks—they belonged to the assassin’s guild.

Finally, Menglinna spoke up first, “Are you sure you want us to hunt humans?”

Miaomiaonia nodded. “At least, they’re still human for now.”

Nanaya couldn’t help but retort, “Shouldn’t this be the assassin guild’s business?”

“Indeed, it should be entrusted to the assassin guild. Unfortunately, the current situation doesn’t allow us to hand this over to others. I can only try to find trustworthy people within the adventurer guild,” Miaomiaonia blinked. “So I found you.”

“Can you tell us why you can’t go to the assassin guild?”

Though the assassin guild was legally forbidden, everyone knew that ban was just for show. Even if it was a bit difficult, as long as one was willing, finding the assassin guild wasn’t hard.

“As I said, your targets are still human for now, but honestly, I can’t be sure what they’ve become,” Miaomiaonia pulled out two files from under the table. “These are their profiles. Unfortunately, they are adventurers of our guild.”

“They?” Menglinna frowned. “Do you mean they are the beasts from the urban legend?”

Miaomiaonia nodded. “Exactly. Though I don’t know the principle, the guild’s security cameras captured them transforming into beasts late at night. For everyone’s safety, I want to hire you to assassinate them.”

Menglinna looked at the two files in Miaomiaonia’s hands and asked hesitantly, “Can they turn back into human form?”

“Of course. If you’re seen, you might be charged with murder and put on trial,” Miaomiaonia’s expression turned serious. “This is not only my request but also for your protection. I hope you’ll handle these two in absolute secrecy, preferably destroying the bodies completely.”

Shiya still couldn’t help asking, “But then, wouldn’t professional assassins be better suited for this?”

Miaomiaonia held up the files. “The problem is their adventurer status. Assassins have superiors too, and we can’t easily force them to keep absolute confidentiality. If word gets out that two adventurers from our guild have become monsters, it will definitely trigger a thorough investigation from above, and the guild might even be temporarily shut down.”

As for a C-rank team like theirs, the guild had enough power to control them. Miaomiaonia didn’t say this outright—it was like killing the donkey after it finished milling—but it was the truth.

If things were as Miaomiaonia said, then in the foreseeable future, adventurers like them who relied on the guild for a living would lose their shelter.

“Additionally, I must make it clear: Although this matter is closely tied to our adventurer guild, the client is me, not the guild receptionist Miaomiaonia, but just a catgirl. If the mission fails, at most it will involve only me.”

It seemed the guild was taking this very seriously.

Menglinna looked at the others’ reactions; everyone seemed hesitant. Better to clarify the rewards first.

“So, for such a dangerous mission, what’s the reward?”

Hearing Menglinna ask about the reward, Miaomiaonia knew there was still hope and perked up. “Those two adventurers aren’t very strong. If you can take them out before they transform, the difficulty isn’t high. Still, the guild will provide generous compensation. Each of you will get five hundred gold coins and one request—anything within the guild’s capability.”

Though the adventurer guild was a government agency under the empire, it still retained grassroots traits. Many strong individuals were attached to it, and a request within the guild’s capability was intriguing. You could ask an S-rank expert under the guild to teach you swordsmanship, or claim the most precious treasure from their warehouse.

Undoubtedly, this represented an opportunity—a chance to glimpse the upper echelons.

With these words, everyone’s stance gradually became clear.

Shiya and Kaili stepped forward first. “We think it’s worth a shot.”

Nanaya also nodded. “I have no objections.”

Looking around, Menglinna nodded. “In that case, we accept the commission.”

With that, she reached for the two files on the table.

Miaomiaonia smiled and handed them over.

“Then, here’s to a pleasant cooperation?”
