Join the ServerAfter snapping back to reality, Menglinna still felt something was off.
If, as Nanaya said, the flame came from her system, shouldn’t it have been manifested as a spell or curse? Why would it directly attach to the Giant Flame Whip?
Sure, she could wash it off, but Menglinna instinctively knew something was wrong. Although Nanaya’s expression had been normal when she received her, her tone carried a hint of impatience, as if she wanted Menglinna to leave as soon as possible.
Something was definitely wrong!
Intuition told Menglinna that she absolutely couldn’t let this slide.
But she had already been there once. Nanaya might be on guard now. What excuse could she use to go back and confirm?
Sitting on the chair, Menglinna looked at the holy bell on her desk and suddenly had an idea.
****
The flame totem on Nanaya’s hand opened its eyes, carefully examining the immature remains in her hand. “Three options. First, make the rough stones into a flail, maximizing their attack power. Drawback: durability might be low, so the weapon’s expected lifespan would be short.”
“No way. An unreliable weapon would harm the user.”
Nanaya naturally vetoed the first forging plan. Using such a rare material as a blunt weapon would be a waste.
“Since you don’t want a melee weapon, options two and three are essentially the same: make it into a holy seal or a staff. Both are casting mediums.”
That sounded more reasonable. Just as Nanaya was about to ask further, the door was knocked again.
*Knock, knock, knock.*
Nanaya made a face like she’d seen a ghost. Normally, the scumbag lady was still keeping her distance, right? Why would she come looking for her multiple times tonight?
This was wrong. Nanaya felt something was very wrong.
“She suspects you,” the Flame Evil God couldn’t help but say, “or she’s into you.”
“Shut up.”
Nanaya habitually ignored the Flame Evil God’s words and picked up the Giant Flame Whip.
She was leaning toward there being something dirty.
Opening the door cautiously, she found Menglinna still standing there. Now wearing loose pajamas, a sleep cap, and holding a pillow, for a moment Nanaya thought she was sleepwalking.
“See? I told you she’s into you!”
Ignoring the Flame Evil God’s meaningless muttering, Nanaya spoke. “What can I do for you?”
Menglinna scratched her cheek sheepishly. “Sorry to bother you. You remember the news we saw this morning at Meow Meow Meow’s place?”
News? Nanaya thought for a moment. “Oh, you mean about the beasts roaming around Yanan City, right?”
Menglinna nodded emphatically. “The news said these monsters like to hunt lone people. From a monster’s perspective, we’d definitely seem like weak prey, right? So shouldn’t we take some precautions?”
“Precautions?”
To be honest, Nanaya had already guessed what Menglinna meant.
“I mean, maybe we should sleep in the same room for a while. That way, if anything happens, we can look out for each other?”
Menglinna deliberately lowered her posture, looking up at Nanaya like a little girl asking for help.
What the hell? A grown woman acting childish over something like this?
Nanaya couldn’t help but pout, wanting to give her a cold shoulder but finding no good reason.
“You’ve already brought your pillow and blanket. You never planned to ask for my opinion, did you?”
With her arms crossed, Nanaya sighed helplessly, then stepped aside to let Menglinna in.
“Thanks, then!”
With that, Menglinna dashed toward Nanaya’s big bed with her pillow and blanket.
“Wait right there!” Nanaya grabbed the scumbag lady by the collar. “I said same room, but I never said you could sleep in my bed, did I?”
*‘As if I want to! I’m just trying to get a closer look to see if you have that mark.’*
Though reluctant, Menglinna couldn’t voice her true thoughts.
The nun lady obediently said, “I’ll do as you say!”
Nanaya waved her hand. “Sleep on the couch.”
Despite her reluctance, Menglinna had no choice but to put her pillow and blanket on the couch nearby. Figuring nothing else would happen tonight, she simply lay down.
Seeing the other preparing to sleep, Nanaya turned off the room’s main light, leaving only the desk lamp.
She couldn’t forge the immature remains tonight, so she decided to look up some related materials. After all, the Flame Evil God’s words might not be accurate; he might hide something for his own purposes.
Thinking this, Nanaya pulled an illustrated guide from the bookshelf.
‘Immature remains’ was just the Flame Evil God’s term. Nanaya couldn’t even confirm what this thing was actually called.
Subconsciously, she picked up the thermos beside her feet to pour herself a cup of hot water, and coincidentally met Menglinna’s gaze from the couch.
The atmosphere was a bit awkward. Nanaya took the initiative to ask, “Do you always sleep this early?”
Menglinna answered honestly, “Normally, I occasionally brew potions for clients, or if a new ruin appears, I check the guide to learn about possible monsters.”
“Seems like you have nothing to do today,” Nanaya said, tossing some tea leaves into the hot water. “Want a cup?”
Menglinna blinked, curious. “If you drink tea before sleep, won’t you have trouble sleeping?”
Nanaya shook her head. “Whether it’s coffee or tea, things that supposedly invigorate others have no effect on me. They don’t affect my sleep at all. In fact, I sleep better after drinking coffee.”
“I see,” Menglinna nodded. “Maybe you’re caffeine intolerant.”
“Either way, it’s fine. If the effect is just reversed, what does it matter?” Nanaya was indifferent to such things. Unconsciously, she stopped flipping through the guide, and the bookmark accidentally fell to the floor.
Snapping back to reality, Nanaya picked up the bookmark and looked apologetically at Menglinna. “Am I disturbing your sleep?”
“It’s fine.”
