Chapter 27: A Different Outcome

Instead of taking the aquarium shuttle, Shihan had her personal driver drive Chen Lin to the station where they first met.

After all, the return shuttle was far too crowded. Considering Chen Lin’s poor mood today, Shihan arranged this out of thoughtfulness.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to take you home?” Shihan asked Chen Lin. She had just suggested it, but he had refused.

“No need, I can go home by myself,” Chen Lin replied.

“Then see you next time~” Shihan waved goodbye cheerfully.

“Goodbye…” Chen Lin said.

Originally, Chen Lin had expected Shihan to confess to him, following the script from his memory.

But to his surprise, Shihan didn’t do that. She simply left.

Watching the car disappear down the road, a new question arose in Chen Lin’s mind.

At first, everything had matched his memories exactly. But the subsequent developments seemed completely different. Why hadn’t Shihan confessed this time?

Maybe that meant the future wasn’t set in stone, and outcomes weren’t inevitable.

Perhaps it was like reaping what you sow—different choices lead to different results.

In the car, Shihan happily opened her phone gallery, filled with photos she had secretly taken.

There were pictures from the dolphin show, where she leaned close to Chen Lin. And from the underwater tunnel, where she rested her head on his shoulder.

In many of these photos, the angles and poses made them look like an affectionate couple.

Shihan had deliberately taken them that way, hoping for that effect.

Her proudest photo was taken at the dolphin stadium bleachers. She had playfully pressed her lips close to Chen Lin’s cheek, just a millimeter away from actually kissing him. It looked as if she had really kissed him.

Since Chen Lin was dazed and unresponsive, Shihan had wanted to tease him, leading to that photo.

“Miss, did something good happen today?” the driver asked, noticing her particularly cheerful mood.

“Plenty of good things. Today was really enjoyable,” Shihan replied happily. Even though the aquarium trip had been a bust, she had gained a more meaningful experience.

Shihan pressed the button to lower the window. The wind rushed in, whipping her beautiful, waterfall-like black hair into the air, creating a picturesque scene.

Actually, Shihan had initially planned to convey her feelings to Chen Lin today, even preparing to confess.

But after various events, she had abandoned that idea.

The reason was not that she didn’t like Chen Lin, but that after understanding him better, she had given up on her immature plan.

‘If I confess, I’ll definitely scare him away,’ she judged.

Only a fool would knowingly court failure.

‘Cowardly Chen Lin is also cute. I feel that after a bit more time together, he’ll fall in love with me,’ she said confidently. ‘Confessing is definitely something girls shouldn’t do; it’s better if the guy takes the lead.’

Having seen another side of Chen Lin, Shihan readily abandoned her confession plan.

Meanwhile, Chen Lin was walking home alone.

After all, by common sense, Yan looked more like a victim than a perpetrator.

That was why Chen Lin knew he had to handle this alone.

Physically, he was far stronger than Yan. If he stayed alert, Yan had no chance against a high school student like him.

And maybe, just as Shihan hadn’t confessed, perhaps Yan wouldn’t hurt him this time either.

With this thought, Chen Lin arrived at his doorstep.

The familiar streets, the familiar house. He had been born and raised here, day after day, year after year, to the point of utter familiarity.

But today, for some reason, his own home felt a little strange.

Chen Lin didn’t rush to approach the house. He looked around but found nothing suspicious.

The night was quiet and peaceful, just like any other day.

Even so, he didn’t go near his home. Instead, using his familiarity with the area, he began searching nearby.

There was a reason: if Yan planned to ambush him later, she must be hiding nearby, waiting for an opportunity.

So if he found her first, he could turn the tables and catch her off guard.

This was Chen Lin’s childhood neighborhood. He knew every alley, even the location of every trash can.

After a thorough search, he finally spotted a familiar sleeve behind a large red mailbox.

It was a bit hard to see, but if he remembered correctly, that bunny hoodie was the one Yan had worn before.

It was the same one she had on when she stabbed him with a fruit knife.

Chen Lin crept toward the mailbox. His plan was to circle behind Yan and, at an unexpected speed, subdue her before she could draw a knife.

With his high school boy’s strength, Chen Lin was confident that Yan, an elementary schooler, was no match for him. Once he grabbed her wrist, she couldn’t escape, and she’d be like a lamb to slaughter.

After capturing her, he intended to interrogate her thoroughly, asking why she wanted to hurt him.
