Chapter 62: Morning Intrusions

Chen Lin got out of bed and looked at his bedroom door. Although it was closed now, there were signs that it had been pushed open just moments ago.

It was not his imagination. To confirm, Chen Lin had set up a small trap last night.

In simple terms, he took a paper cup and placed it behind the door.

If anyone had secretly pushed the door open, the cup would have moved or fallen over.

Now the cup lay on its side on the floor. Clearly, the door had been opened just now, proving that the past few mornings had not been his imagination.

Chen Lin got dressed and left his bedroom. As soon as he entered the living room, he saw Yan sitting on the sofa.

She had her hands on her knees, looking obedient and cute.

“Go wash up, breakfast is ready~” Yan stood up and greeted him warmly. On the dining table lay steaming breakfast: a bowl of hot soy milk and two buns.

Seeing Yan, Chen Lin knew it must have been her who had opened his door. There was no other possibility.

The reason she could enter his home was that she already had a key.

That memory was unbearable. He had thought escaping the basement was the end, but it turned out to be only the beginning of his torment.

That very night, Yan and Shihan had no intention of letting him go. They followed him home, scared him half to death, and he thought they were going to kill him again.

Using the girlfriend status he had promised them, they forced him to hand over the keys to his home.

This meant they had the right to come and go as they pleased.

Of course, Chen Lin did not want to give them that right. His argument was sound: even a girlfriend should not arbitrarily get a key to her boyfriend’s house.

But when Shihan and Yan were about to resort to violence, Chen Lin had no choice but to humbly hand over the spare keys, giving one to each of them, signing the first unequal treaty that ceded his sovereignty.

Yan used the spare key, so every morning for the past two days, she came to bring him breakfast.

Actually, Chen Lin suspected that even if he hadn’t given her the key, the twenty-year-old broken security lock on his door would not have stopped Yan and Shihan anyway. After all, the storage room downstairs had a higher-grade lock, and they had already opened that successfully.

After washing up, Chen Lin sat at the table and began to eat the breakfast Yan had brought.

He bit into the buns and found one was vegetable and the other meat. Paired with the hot soy milk, it was quite comforting to start the day.

While he ate, Yan sat beside him, watching him intently.

Frankly, being stared at while eating made him uncomfortable.

“What time did you get up today?” Chen Lin suddenly asked.

“Five,” Yan replied.

“That early?” Chen Lin was surprised.

“I had to prepare breakfast and bring it to you,” Yan explained.

“Isn’t that too tiring?” Chen Lin said.

“Not at all,” Yan immediately retorted.

“But… getting up that early must mean you lack sleep,” Chen Lin said.

Chen Lin made up his mind to persuade Yan to come less often in the morning. His motivation was not concern for her, but because he was stared at every morning under such high pressure, he automatically woke up scared. If this continued, he would lack sleep and his body would suffer.

“I don’t lack sleep at all. I have a nap period at school, and I catch up on weekends,” Yan quickly replied.

Chen Lin was determined to reduce her visits, so he immediately said, “How about this: you can come on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, and rest on Tuesday and Thursday.”

“Brother, do you hate me? Do you think I’m interfering with your life?” Yan acutely sensed his true intention.

Although Chen Lin wanted to say yes, that if she came every day he would get neurasthenia, he knew he couldn’t tell the truth given the special circumstances, so he had to lie.

“Of course I don’t hate you. I like you a lot. That’s why I can’t bear to see you so tired,” Chen Lin said gently, as if he truly cared.

Chen Lin didn’t know why, but he used to be someone who was easily caught lying. After several death loops, perhaps because he had been forced to lie more often, he had become much more skilled at it, even able to make up nonsense on the spot. A few weeks ago, he would have needed time to think before telling such a lie; he couldn’t have blurted it out.

Yan actually didn’t want to come only on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, but since Chen Lin put it that way, she couldn’t argue. After all, he had been so gentle with her. If she were too stubborn, wouldn’t she seem annoying? No one would like a girl who is stubborn and inflexible. So, although unwilling, she chose to accept it for Chen Lin to like her more.

“Yan has been so obedient. Won’t big brother give Yan a reward?” Yan said coquettishly, her voice soft and sweet.

Chen Lin knew exactly what the reward was. Sighing inwardly, he used his left hand to cover Yan’s eyes, then gently touched her lips with the index and middle fingers of his right hand.

Yan loved this substitute for a kiss and often asked for this ‘reward’. Chen Lin sometimes indulged her. Since Yan had been so obedient this time, he decided to grant it.

After breakfast, Chen Lin picked up the bento Yan had made for him and headed to school, while Yan went to school on her own.

Before, Chen Lin would have worried about her safety walking alone. But after being killed by her several times, he thought that concern was actually a very funny joke.

“Good morning, Mumu~” a familiar male voice came from behind Chen Lin.

He didn’t need to turn around to know it was his best friend, Jin Jie.

Jin Jie patted Chen Lin’s shoulder and looked at the bear-shaped insulated lunchbox in his hand.

“Your lunchbox is still so cute today, as always,” Jin Jie nodded.

“Is ‘as always’ really the right word? Except for the past few days, I’ve never brought such a lunchbox before,” Chen Lin immediately retorted to his friend without hesitation.
