Chapter 89 : How Unfortunate

Clinging to the ceiling, the dim light of the dungeon perfectly concealed her.

Waiting for them to leave was an option, but if they raised the alarm, escape would be impossible. The next move was risky.

As the two guards rushed to check on Lillian, Milly gently flapped her wings and silently moved to the dungeon gate. All she had to do was go up, cross a corridor, pass through a few rooms, and then exit through the cathedral.

It was the route she had taken last time. There were surely other exits, but she had no time to search.

Leaving now was the right choice.

As for how to survive outside, she couldn’t think about that now.

Freedom was within her grasp.

Staying in the cage would only lead to decay.

She flew up out of the dungeon. She had expected to be met with the darkness of night, a perfect cover.

But as she neared the exit, she saw light.

It was fine. Just the light of a lamp.

She told herself that, but when she flew out, she was met with the blinding sun.

“Damn it.”

She quickly pressed herself against the ceiling. Through the open window of the corridor, she could see a squad of paladins training in the courtyard, bathed in the morning sun.

If Lillian had left a few hours earlier, she could have escaped before dawn. She might have run into an early-rising nun, but at least she wouldn’t be facing a squad of knights.

If the guards in the dungeon raised the alarm, the paladins in the courtyard would swarm the cathedral, searching for her.

That would be the worst-case scenario. She could only hope that Lillian could hold them off.

Even if she escaped now, her appearance was too conspicuous. She had to find a disguise.

Just then, she heard voices from around the corner below. Two nuns were carrying a set of clothes.

Just what she needed.

She clung to the ceiling. The nuns didn’t look up.

The high ceilings of the cathedral, designed for beauty, now served her purpose.

The nuns entered a room she hadn’t been to before. This was the dangerous part.

As she followed, she passed by several nuns and priests. Each time, the two nuns would stop and greet them.

And each time, Milly had to press herself tightly against the ceiling. Whether it was luck or the fact that the Goddess hadn’t blessed her followers with the ability to look up, she remained undiscovered.

In the laundry room, she waited for the two nuns to start washing. Soon, they left to get more water.

Her chance. She quickly dropped to the floor, entered the room, and grabbed a nun’s habit, pulling it on over her wings.

It looked strange from the back, but it was better than nothing.

The long tail was a bigger problem, but the long skirt of the habit could just about hide it, as long as it behaved.

She put on the wimple, hiding her conspicuous white hair, and quickly left the laundry room.

She now looked like an ordinary nun. Mimicking the way the two nuns had walked, she headed back toward the cathedral.

“Sister,” a gentle voice came from behind. “Could you help me with these scrolls?”

Wrong time.

Running would be suspicious. She could only hope he was new and didn’t know everyone.

Forcing herself to stay calm, she turned and took some of the scrolls.

“Thank you so much. I couldn’t carry them all by myself.”

He thanked her, then looked at her face.

“Are you a new sister? I don’t think I’ve seen you before.”

Damn it.

Milly could only nod. “I… I just joined the Church today.”

“I see. Then come with me. These scrolls need to be taken to the archives. We have to finish before His Holiness the Pope returns.”

Wait, the Pope?

A bad feeling. If that old fool was coming back, every second she stayed here was a risk.

The nun had believed her for now, but if she ran into someone else, her lie would be exposed.

She had to get out.

A nun running in the street was strange, but better than a demon.

Once she was out, she would go to Stacy’s house. She was dead anyway. She would inherit her legacy and then find a way to leave Starlight City.

“I’m sorry, I don’t feel well.”

She put down the scrolls, clutched her stomach, and ran, leaving the nun confused. “If your stomach hurts, you should go the other way. You’re going the wrong way, sister.”

Ignoring him, she ran toward the cathedral. The morning prayer was over. Only two nuns were cleaning. They didn’t even look up as she passed.

She was almost there. Freedom was waving at her.

She burst out of the cathedral doors, the blinding sun making her squint. As her eyes adjusted, a golden carriage stopped in front of the cathedral.

Oswell, in his magnificent robes, was stepping out.

How unfortunate.

Milly quickly ran in the other direction. A commanding voice came from behind.

“Stop.”

Had she been recognized?

She tried to blend into the crowd. The Pope wouldn’t just attack indiscriminately, would he? He had to avoid hurting his followers.

So, goodbye.

She hadn’t taken two steps when a golden light, like a snake, wrapped around her ankle. She fell hard.

She looked back. Oswell was holding the other end of the light, which had solidified into a rope.

Damn it… if that old fool hadn’t sealed her powers, she would have summoned Broken and chopped him into pieces in front of everyone.

But now, she couldn’t break free.

“Go, bring her back.”

Two fully armed knights grabbed her, ignoring her struggles, and dragged her before the Pope.

At the same time, Lillian finally arrived.

Seeing the scene, a complicated expression flickered in her eyes. After a moment of thought, she approached Oswell.

“I’m sorry, I underestimated this demon. Even with her powers sealed, she still found a way to escape.”

Oswell glanced at her, seemingly uninterested in the details. As long as Milly was alive and hadn’t escaped, it was fine.

“Saintess, prepare the purification ritual.”

The moment she heard his command, Lillian froze, her pupils shaking.
