Chapter 174 : Just a Walk to Clear My Head

Why?

Her mind flashed with the memories she had seen.

When she entered, she was immediately given the identity of a revered hero. Her starting point was a church, a novice village, and a Saintess to guide her.

But her, Milly? She had been inexplicably thrown into this world, still unsure how she had even participated in the test. She hadn’t clicked any suspicious links. And she had appeared in a nearly broken file.

What greeted her was a fallen Saintess, a paranoid, insane virus desperate to escape the world. Her starting point wasn’t a novice village, but the final boss’s lair. No main quest, no side quests. The only key clue had to be obtained at the cost of her sanity.

Thinking of everything she had been through, only three words came to mind.

Why?

Why did the other players, the other participants, get to be heroes, starting in a novice village? And from the memories she had seen, their difficulty was low, a newbie level. While she had to face Hell mode.

In that moment, she felt a string in her mind about to snap. She looked at Stacy’s face, so close. If she just killed the guide right here…

She reached out, a faint tearing sensation in her palm.

Something was about to break through.

Stacy was startled by her look and took a few steps back, a hint of panic in her eyes. “Hero… no, Milly?”

She quickly calmed down. In her mind, Milly was still the hero chosen by the Goddess.

Although she didn’t know what was wrong with Milly, she probably wouldn’t do anything. And, in the face of the chosen hero, she shouldn’t have such emotions. It was a sign of distrust in the Goddess, a great sin.

The moment something was about to emerge from her palm, Milly pulled her hand back. The thing that was about to take form dissipated.

She had no reason, and no way, to attack this Stacy.

The purity in her eyes stung Milly. She couldn’t see the madness and danger she had seen in that person’s eyes. Now, all she could see was worry and confusion.

She still couldn’t connect the Saintess Stacy before her with the Fell God in her memory. And even the one who had fallen…

After Stacy had pushed her into the light screen, the figure that had blocked her had disappeared.

Her outstretched hand fell limply.

The moment she realized her situation, the strong sense of imbalance almost made her lose her mind. She was being too irrational.

“Pathetic.”

She cursed herself and turned to the closed door.

“Wait, hero…”

Stacy grabbed her hand.

“Milly, where are you going?”

Milly gently pulled her hand away. She didn’t look back. She just opened the door and said softly, “Just a walk to clear my head.”

With the sound of the door closing, Milly disappeared.

The hero just couldn’t accept her fate yet. She was worried about the uncertain future, so she was acting strangely. But she was the chosen hero. She would eventually walk her destined path.

And if she strayed, as a guide, she would lead her back to the right path.

So, she believed that with a little time, the hero would accept her destiny.

But, given Milly’s current unstable state, she had to follow her.

At the same time, as Milly left the prayer room, she saw Candice standing guard outside. The silver-armored girl’s eyes were still filled with caution. Since Milly had noticed her, she had never seen her take her hand off her sword hilt.

“Relax, I didn’t do anything to your Saintess.”

As Milly passed her, Candice opened her mouth to say something, but Stacy came out and put a hand on her shoulder.

“Hero, although there are some things you can’t accept right now…”

“The hero just asked a few questions.”

“But…”

“It’s nothing to be afraid of. She just wants to take a walk to clear her head.”

Although Candice didn’t say anything more, her eyes were still fixed on the distant figure, her hand still on her sword.

For her, her Saintess was too trusting. Although she also believed in the prophecy, the chosen hero hadn’t appeared with the summoning circle, but had fallen from the sky after it had faded.

Perhaps the real hero hadn’t appeared, and that person had just appeared by chance. In any case, whether she was really the chosen one still needed to be tested.

Although Candice had such thoughts, the Saintess beside her didn’t. She watched Milly’s back disappear around the corner, her eyes filled with worry.

“Candice, I’m still a little worried about the hero.”

With that, Stacy chased after her, as if to follow her secretly. Seeing this, Candice could only follow. After all, as the Saintess’s guard, her safety was the top priority. And she also wanted to take this opportunity to observe this chosen hero in secret.

“So bright.”

Leaving the cathedral, Milly looked up at the red sun. The last time she had been free in Starlight City was when she first escaped from Stacy.

Now, not only could she move freely in the city, but when she passed by the nuns, they would look at her with fanatical eyes.

“Look! It’s the hero! She’s here!”

Some would even kneel as she passed, their hands clasped in front of their chests, “Please, you must defeat the revived Demon King.”

Hearing these voices, a complex emotion welled up in Milly. But because of her own experiences, she felt more annoyed than anything else.

Oh.

Now she was a hero, not that person.

So she was getting all this. What if her identity was exposed? What if, as a hero, she had to protect these humans and reveal her demonic identity, just like that time? Would the result be the same?

Milly had the answer. Compared to that time, if she revealed her demonic identity now, it would only incite more hatred.

After all, it wasn’t just a simple demon sneaking in to cause trouble, but a damn demon pretending to be a hero, even staging various scenes of a hero defeating a demon to gain trust. If it came to that, even a hundred judgments on the stand wouldn’t be enough to quell the public’s anger.

She raised her hand to block her eyes. Through her fingers, she could see the red sun. Bathed in the dazzling sunlight, it didn’t suit her. And she couldn’t be a hero.

Milly wandered the city aimlessly, her feet taking her wherever they wanted. But a few questions kept popping up in her mind.

Why was this memory not just shown to her, but she was made to participate in it?

And why was this memory so different from the others? Whose sealed memory was it?

The old fool was afraid of her entering the Corridor of Memory. He must be afraid of her finding something. Milly could only guess that it was related to this sealed memory.

But for now, there were no clues. Although Milly didn’t want to be a hero, with no leads, she could only try to follow the main quest of this file and try her luck. Maybe after clearing it, she would get some key item, and that item was what the old fool was afraid of.

As she thought, the crimson countdown was still flickering in the corner of her vision. But the speed seemed to have slowed down a lot.

[50:09:12:29]

It had returned to its normal speed. That was the only good news so far.
