What… what was going on?
Did someone’s anatomy skeleton escape from a biology classroom? Oh wait, this was another world. Moving skeletons were probably normal here.
So, a necromancer had appeared, using Raise Dead on a human skeleton. Was the next step to revive the monster corpses?
The scene of the melting corpses flashed in her mind. If not to prepare for their revival, then it could only be for…
The next moment, the skeleton tripped over something—or maybe it just wasn’t used to its new body—and performed a textbook faceplant right in front of Milly.
Seriously?
When it first emerged from the fog, Milly had braced herself for a final boss battle. But now, watching the skeleton lie there, unmoving, she wondered if it had shattered on impact.
Forget it. She had rested enough. There was nothing stopping her from crossing the core now.
She closed her eyes and activated her God’s perspective. As the fog cleared, the map in her mind sharpened.
She was deep in the core. Ahead lay a lake—perfect for washing off the grime of battle. She would rest there for the night, then cross the rest of the forest tomorrow to reach the demon territory.
But as she scanned the terrain, Milly noticed a shadow on her mental map, like a blot of ink spreading.
She was sure it hadn’t been there before she noticed the lake. There was only one explanation.
She opened her eyes and looked at the fallen skeleton. The moment her gaze locked on it, her pupils trembled.
“W-What is that?”
The thick black liquid that had seeped into the ground was now surging back up, clinging to the pale bones like a living shadow. It wrapped around every inch of the skeleton.
Once covered, flesh began to grow, writhing and expanding over the bones. If she let it continue, the skeleton would be fully revived.
In that moment, Milly remembered the legends of the forest core. The Fallen God’s flesh and blood had seeped into the soil, birthing dangerous monsters.
Those monsters were dead, their remains melted into black water, returning to their progenitor.
If her guess was right, the thing covered in black water was the legendary Fallen God. It was using the deaths of its children to fuel its resurrection.
No wonder she had felt the energy absorption decrease with each kill. Most of it was being siphoned away, leaving only scraps for her.
And the battle had been too easy. The monsters had practically thrown themselves at her tentacle.
Watching the Fallen God reform its body, Milly realized the truth. It was using her to complete its resurrection.
As expected of a Fallen God. Milly summoned lightning to her fingertips. Before its body was complete, it was just a skeleton.
Sick? Take your medicine!
A blinding bolt of lightning exploded on the black water, sending droplets flying. But the liquid seemed alive, crawling back onto the skeleton, wrapping around it once more.
New flesh filled the gaps. Milly noticed the outermost layer of black water hardening, taking on a metallic sheen. As the fog cleared, it formed a shattered suit of black armor around the growing body.
“Damn it… useless…”
Milly gritted her teeth, gathering all her stored electricity in her palm. Her aura changed, blue lightning crackling around her. Her white hair floated in the static, and her red eyes glowed with violent energy.
“All in one shot.”
“Die!”
A dragon of lightning roared from her hands, slamming into the reforming skeleton. The shockwave cracked the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust that hid the creature from view.
As the lightning faded, a figure slowly emerged from the smoke.
It was covered in shattered black armor, the pieces held together by an unseen force, black blood oozing from the cracks. Beneath the armor, writhing flesh was visible, supporting the structure.
Black flames clung to the Fallen God’s body, burning with a heat that seemed to sear the soul.
Milly stared at the broken mask on its face. Beneath it was a mass of grotesque flesh. In the eye sockets, there were no eyeballs—only two balls of green fire.
“Guh…”
The green flames turned to Milly. A sound gurgled from its throat, like boiling liquid.
As the massive figure walked toward her, Milly used her appraisal skill, though she had little hope. The result made her break out in a cold sweat.
[???]
Three question marks. Nothing else.
Damn it…
She raised her hand, ignoring the tearing pain as a black tentacle shot out from her palm, aimed at the towering figure.
Even if she couldn’t win, she had to at least hurt it.
The tentacle flew like an arrow. But the moment it touched the black flames, her unbeatable weapon failed for the first time. The flames incinerated it instantly.
Milly retracted the remaining part of the tentacle, but some of the black fire clung to it, rushing toward her.
Bad…
It was too late. She watched the black fire race toward her. But the moment it touched her hand, it was blocked by an invisible barrier.
Lisa?
Milly turned to look for her, but a wave of heat hit her face.
She turned back too late. A wave of black fire swept toward her like a giant blade. Though only the edge grazed her, she was sent flying, slamming into a dead tree.
Thanks to the barrier, she wasn’t hurt, but she heard a cracking sound upon impact. She couldn’t bet on the barrier holding against another hit.
The Fallen God walked toward her, the black flames in its hand forming a massive sword, pointed at her throat.
Was this it?
Just as the blade fell, a slender figure flashed in front of her, blocking the strike.
“Lisa?”
No… it wasn’t her.
The girl’s flaxen hair was changing color from the roots, turning a familiar silver. As the hair transformed into moonlight silver, a familiar voice made Milly’s breath catch.
“You’ve done very well, Little Milly~” The voice was rare in its gentleness.
“Leave the rest to me.”
