Compared to the bustling streets of the day, the night was much quieter.
Homeless people wandered the streets, and occasionally, a drunken man would stumble out of an alley. Milly could only wrap her cloak tighter and carefully walk past them.
The cloak hid her inhuman features, but her restless tail always wanted to peek out. She had to keep a hand on it at all times. She would have to deal with it sooner or later.
The knights who were supposed to be hunting her had been drawn to the west of the city by Stacy’s decoy, along with many of the adventurers who had taken the commission. The distance was too great for her to see what was happening, but she could imagine it was quite lively.
But the quiet night did not mean she was safe. It was still full of dangers.
Most of the adventurers had been drawn to the west, but there were always those who didn’t play by the rules. Their minds worked differently. They wouldn’t follow the crowd. They would trust their instincts and try their luck elsewhere.
Their logic was simple. With so many people in the west, and the Church’s main force there, they wouldn’t get a piece of the pie. If they tried their luck elsewhere, they might just run into the fleeing Milly.
There were a few such people in every area. And Milly’s area was no exception.
Since last night, with her God’s perspective, she had noticed a few suspicious figures on the streets. Unlike the homeless or the drunkards, these people were armed. And whenever they passed a dark alley, they would always look inside.
It was a little troublesome, but there weren’t many of them. With her God’s perspective, she could easily avoid them.
And they were just searching blindly, relying on luck. With her appraisal skill, she could not only see their information, but also their current status.
Their patience was running out.
Tonight, if they still couldn’t find her, they would probably leave and try their luck elsewhere.
But with her near-cheating abilities, she was playing a game of hide-and-seek with her eyes wide open.
If nothing went wrong tonight, she could relax a little tomorrow.
But that’s life. You never know what will come first, tomorrow or an accident.
Just as she was thinking that, an accident happened.
She was using her God’s perspective to watch the adventurers. They had finally split up, making one last attempt. If one of them found her, the others would immediately come.
They were searching in different directions. She could easily avoid them. But the next moment, her vision went black.
She opened her eyes, the world spinning. She had to hold onto the wall to keep from falling.
She rubbed her throbbing temples. She had been using her ability too much. She needed to rest.
This was not good. Although she had several routes to choose from, the adventurers were constantly moving. She might run into them at the next corner.
“Just my luck.”
When her headache subsided, she let go of the wall. Without her God’s perspective, she could still sense the strange movements in the night, but the range was limited.
She would follow the route she had planned, and then rely on her hearing.
She crossed a street. As she was about to turn a corner, her foot slipped.
“Ugh…”
She stumbled forward, reaching for something to grab, but her foot landed on a loose brick.
Crack!
The sharp sound was piercing in the silent night. She froze, a cold sweat drenching her back. Before she could complain about the shoddy construction, she heard a noise.
Besides a few footsteps rushing toward her, she also heard voices.
“Go check it out.”
A rough male voice, accompanied by the sound of footsteps. She had to run. But she had forgotten about the broken brick. Her right foot was still on it. She fell flat on her face.
Ignoring the pain, she knew they were close.
She pushed herself up. She had to leave before they found her. She didn’t notice that her right shoe had come off, left behind on the ground.
When the adventurers arrived, she was gone. Only the small leather shoe remained.
“An unexpected find.”
The leader looked in the direction she had gone. A normal girl would have picked up her shoe. But she hadn’t. What did that mean?
“It seems the Goddess is on our side. After her. She can’t be far.”
As for the idiots in the west, they could just watch them collect the reward.
At the same time, in a narrow alley, Milly suddenly noticed her missing shoe. Her white sock was now filthy.
The footsteps were getting closer. It was only a matter of time before they found her. She had to lead them astray.
She took off her left shoe and placed it on the ground, making it look like she had lost another one in her haste.
She had seen their information. They were not the brightest. They would surely follow the trail she had created.
It wasn’t enough. She took off her left sock, scraped her foot on the ground, and left a bloody footprint in the opposite direction. Then she put her sock back on.
It was a new pair from Stacy’s closet.
Now, without shoes, she could only hope the socks were of good quality.
She found an empty can and threw it on the ground. The noise was enough to attract their attention.
She ran in the opposite direction of the bloody footprint. She didn’t have time to be picky. She crawled into a drainage pipe and held her breath in the stinking darkness.
The adventurers found her other shoe, and the bloody footprint.
“This way!”
“There’s blood!”
“After her! She can’t be far!”
The footsteps faded. When they were gone, she crawled out and ran in the opposite direction. She didn’t stop until dawn, when she had to find a new place to hide.
Two more days passed. That night, she reached the edge of the slums.
From what she had overheard, she knew there was a shortcut out of the city here. It would save her a night’s travel. She just had to find the secret passage.
With her recovered God’s perspective, it wouldn’t be difficult.
But the nights had become more dangerous. Since the news of her had spread two days ago, many adventurers had come, and she had even seen Church knights during the day. There might be a large-scale search tonight.
She shook her head, clearing her thoughts. She wrapped the tattered cloak around her. Night had fallen. It was time to go.
