Milly stared at her reflection, the text hovering before her eyes, a strange, painful sight. She rubbed her eyes, but the words remained. The information displayed was different from what she had seen for others. She had only seen question marks in the annotation section before, never for the main attribute name.
If the name “Milly” was displayed as “???” what did it mean? Did it suggest that her true identity was unknown, or that the name itself was meaningless?
Connecting this to her theory about the world’s true nature, Milly felt she had an answer. As for the next line, she could only guess it was related to her current abnormal state.
The night she was forced to sign the contract, she remembered unleashing all her stored electricity. When she almost lost control, a tentacle shot out from her palm. She had thought it was Stacy’s doing.
But if her current state was indeed abnormal, it could mean something else. Like Tifna, who had a black tentacle shoot out of her body, protecting her from a fatal blow.
The most logical guess was that Stacy had left something in her body. But all these guesses were based on her own interpretation of the question marks. She couldn’t confirm anything.
But her name being displayed as a question mark was strange. She had a memory of her mother calling her “Milly” in her dream. She wondered if she would still be called that if she returned home.
She shook her head. She had to focus on the countdown. She was a grown woman in a child’s body. How could she face her friends and family?
She slapped her face, trying to clear her head. She needed to verify her theory in the demon territory.
She took off her towel, ready for a bath. The water temperature was perfect. She saw a bucket of hot water beside the tub.
She had been in the holy water pool for days. The last time she had a proper bath was after Stacy found her in the rain.
The comfort of the warm water was overwhelming. Her eyes turned red, and her small wings and tail emerged. She was being too relaxed. If Lisa walked in now, she would be exposed.
As she soaked, she noticed a strange tingling on her wounds. She looked at her wings. The arrow wound was healing.
Had her healing ability recovered? No. She looked at the weak electricity in her palm. Her magic was still limited. And her healing couldn’t have recovered so quickly.
The final moment of her reflection on the water changed. Her body was healing, but a new line of text appeared.
[Bathwater with Healing Potion Added; Excellent Healing Effect]
Lisa had added a healing potion to the bathwater? A potion of that quality would be expensive. She was just a stranger.
She quickly thought of another possibility. If it was her doing, the appraisal skill would have been silent. Even though the potion was ordinary, it had awakened her self-healing ability.
“Milly, dinner is ready.”
Lisa’s voice came from outside. One question unanswered, another one appeared. She touched the thorn sigil on her collarbone. The sigil was glowing faintly, as if it had sensed something familiar.
She was almost sure. But she couldn’t say anything yet.
She got out of the tub and dressed. The clothes were coarse, but soft.
At the table, the porridge was steaming. The smell was familiar, the taste she had dreamed of in the dungeon.
She had deduced that the taste in her dreams was a reflection of reality.
Once was a coincidence. Twice was a pattern.
She swallowed her food, the warmth comforting her. Lisa smiled, seemingly unaware of the turmoil inside Milly.
“My room is upstairs. The door is open. You can go to sleep now. We have to leave early tomorrow.”
Lisa went to the kitchen. Milly quickly washed her mouth and went upstairs. The room was small, with a single wooden bed. She would have to share it with Lisa.
In the quiet of the night, she lay on the bed, back to Lisa. She was close to someone again.
She could hear Lisa’s steady breathing. She was still awake. To confirm her suspicion, she had to ask a direct question.
“Lisa…” she whispered. “Are you asleep?”
“Hmm?” Lisa’s drowsy response.
“Have you ever seen a demon?”
The bed trembled slightly. Lisa turned around. The moonlight shone on her green eyes.
“No. The village priest says they have wings and tails, and they eat children.” She chuckled. “But that’s just a story. They can’t all be bad, right? Like humans, they must have good and bad ones. There are kind people in the village, but there are also bandits.”
“If… if a demon was standing in front of you…”
“It depends. Did they steal my bread, or chase away a wild wolf? It makes a big difference. If they were cute, I would be friends with them.”
Milly heard a faint sigh, which was quickly suppressed.
“Time to sleep. We have an early start tomorrow.”
Lisa’s breathing soon became steady. Milly stared at the moon, her thoughts swirling.
If Lisa were just a stranger, she would have been happy to hear those words. But if her guess was right, Lisa’s words meant nothing.
She finally fell asleep, only to be woken up by a familiar sensation.
The next morning, she opened her eyes and found the source of the strange, stifling sensation.
The girl, who had no manners in her sleep, was sprawled across her, clinging to her like an octopus.
