Join the ServerHer fingers brushed through the styled hair at the back of her head, the chill from Stacy’s fingertips still lingering. It was as if cold data had been made manifest in that moment.
She had never had long hair before, and after transmigrating, she had always just let it hang loose, never bothering to style it. Having someone comb it for her was a novel experience, and Milly didn’t dislike it.
But for most of the process, Milly was pondering the problems laid out before her. If a mirror had been placed in front of her from the start, she might have had trouble concentrating.
She had expected a change of clothes after the hair styling. Although she had gotten used to the dress, the thought of being treated like a doll still made her resistant.
No, no… was there something wrong with her head?
Time was running out. Was this the time to be thinking about such things?
She followed Stacy downstairs. A pleasant aroma wafted through the air, the scent of toasted bread mixed with the sweetness of jam. On the dining table, several pieces of golden-brown toast were arranged on an exquisite plate, spread with the sweet-smelling jam.
Next to the toast was a perfectly fried egg, the edges crispy and lace-like, the yolk plump and round, promising a flow of golden liquid at the slightest touch of a fork. Milly preferred runny yolks to fully cooked ones.
The plate was garnished with cut fruit, and a glass of warm milk sat beside it. For a breakfast, it was quite lavish. At least for Milly, who hadn’t had many full meals.
The sumptuous breakfast left Milly stunned. Although she had eaten Lisa’s breakfast before, seeing this made it hard to believe it came from Stacy.
After all, the indescribable things Stacy had served before were enough to make one vomit.
“Not to your liking?”
Seeing Milly’s pale face, Stacy asked unconsciously.
“No… just remembered the previous ones.”
Looking at the food, Milly couldn’t help but recall the writhing, screaming meat, the hiding mushrooms… her stomach churned, and her face paled further.
Those memories were too vivid. If the Stacy back then could have served normal food like this, even if it tasted a little bad, Milly wouldn’t have cried over a piece of mediocre venison when she met Tifna.
That experience had started everything that followed.
If that hadn’t happened, perhaps she would have taken a completely different path. Even if the outcome remained the same, at least her impression of Stacy wouldn’t be so terrible, and the hatred in her heart would be a little less.
Of course, what happened couldn’t be changed, and regrets wouldn’t rewrite the past.
Clearing her mind, she knew she wouldn’t be able to eat if she kept thinking about it. There was work to do. She had to eat.
Milly picked up a piece of toast and put it in her mouth. After she spoke, a strange silence fell over the table, broken only by the sound of her chewing.
Stacy opposite her was probably remembering her dark cuisine. No… calling those abominations dark cuisine was an insult to the term. Those things were barely edible.
She had tasted them herself. Luckily, her taste buds weren’t so damaged that she couldn’t tell good from bad. She knew what she had made was problematic.
“I’m sorry…”
“Hmm?”
Stacy’s sudden apology made Milly stop chewing. Had she just apologized?
“I found the reason… my own body really can’t make normal food. Ridiculous, isn’t it?”
It sounded ridiculous. How could one body fail to make normal food while another could? But remembering that this was a virtual game world, the explanation made sense. It could be a setting, like Stacy being programmed to be unable to cook, resulting in abominations no matter what she tried.
“The same body, but before I fell, I could…”
“Hmm?”
Was Stacy muttering to herself? Fell? What did she mean? Becoming a Fell God?
This was key information. Milly had thought Stacy was given the title of Fell God the moment she was born as a virus. But it seemed the title was acquired later, which meant she became a virus later on.
From the beginning, Stacy had been a normal NPC, just like the citizens on the street. She didn’t know what had happened to turn a normal Stacy into a virus.
This piqued Milly’s interest. She downed the milk in one go, swallowed the bread, and looked at Stacy eagerly.
“It seems the Fell God has a hidden past.”
“Eh?”
Putting down her tea cup, Stacy hadn’t expected Milly to change her tone, or to bring this up.
“I don’t remember clearly,” she said, her gaze drifting to the street outside the window, her voice light as the wind. “It was too long ago. Those memories feel like they’re shrouded in eternal fog. I can’t see them clearly anymore.”
“Did she really forget, or does she not want to say?”
Milly leaned toward the latter. Everyone had a past they didn’t want to talk about. Since Stacy didn’t want to say, Milly didn’t press.
Neither spoke again. The only sound at the table was the clinking of cutlery. The silence lasted until breakfast was over.
After clearing the table, Stacy suddenly grabbed Milly’s right hand.
“Hmm?”
“Is it time to go? I haven’t seen it before. Are we finally going to see Stacy use teleportation magic?”
Things didn’t go as Milly expected. The book-shaped symbol on the back of her hand suddenly glowed.
“Wait, this is…”
