“I wonder who the bad actor is here.”
After pondering for a while, Milly reached out her hand to Stacy. She would give her five seconds. If she didn’t take it by then, she would retract her hand and forget about it.
Based on her interactions with Lisa, she expected Stacy to be momentarily stunned, exceeding the five seconds, giving Milly the chance to pull away.
But things didn’t go as planned. Stacy didn’t hesitate. She smiled and grabbed Milly’s hand.
“What, are you worried about me?”
“No,” Milly snatched her hand back, turning her head away as if burned. “I wouldn’t worry about a bastard who acts from beginning to end.”
Watching Milly’s fleeing back, Stacy licked her pale lips. “How cute, Little Milly~”
Although the little one’s words were harsh, her body was honest, revealing her true feelings.
“I never thought I would be worried about…”
Stacy placed her hand on her chest, feeling the unfamiliar emotion surging inside. She couldn’t describe it, but it wasn’t bad. It might even be addictive.
But… thinking of the battle with the Fallen God, she realized her strength had dropped terrifyingly low. Faking her death under the noses of those behind the scenes had come at a high price.
But it also gave her an opportunity. Those arrogant beings would never suspect that she, whose existence had been erased, would return. They believed their special weapon had wiped her out completely.
Now she was in the shadows, and they were gradually being exposed.
But to deal with them, this body was still not enough.
She was one step away from restoring her own body. Once she was back to her full power, she wouldn’t have to fear them or their methods.
No need to think about that for now. She looked at Milly in the distance. The little one had stopped, as if waiting for her.
Perhaps their relationship had thawed a little.
The shadow on her brow faded, replaced by a gentle smile. Compared to the smile she wore when watching her prey struggle, this one was much softer, her eyes filled with tenderness. She had changed without realizing it.
She caught up to Milly. The last rays of the sun had faded, and dusk swept over the forest core. The broken moonlight filtered through the charred branches, casting dappled shadows on the ground.
Milly led the way, knowing that Stacy was following two steps behind. She had expected Stacy to walk beside her, maybe even grab her hand. Knowing her, it would have been easy.
But she kept her distance, which was unusual. The burning gaze on her back made Milly uncomfortable.
Just a few days ago, their relationship had been tense. She remembered Stacy finding her in the rain, wanting to say something. Milly had refused to listen, leaving her with the words that she would never forgive her.
Until today, when she saw Lisa transform into Stacy. Although she had considered the possibility, seeing it with her own eyes still caused a stir in her heart.
In that moment, she couldn’t bring herself to hate her.
Stacy had hurt her deeply, the memories still etched in her soul. But since she started her escape, Milly had to admit that without Stacy’s help, she wouldn’t be here. She probably wouldn’t have found the truth in the demon territory before the countdown reached zero.
Thinking of Stacy now, Milly felt a complex mix of emotions. For a moment, she wasn’t sure what attitude she should have toward her.
A cold wind blew past, interrupting her thoughts. Unknowingly, she had reached the lake she had seen with her God’s perspective. The surface reflected the shattered starry sky, like a broken mirror.
“We’re here.”
Milly’s voice softened. According to her plan, they would rest by the lake for the night and set off for the demon territory in the morning.
The damp night wind brushed her face, but it couldn’t clear the confusion in her mind. What did Stacy mean to her?
The more she thought, the more confused she became. She walked to the lake, took off her shoes and stockings, and sat by the water, letting the cool wind wash over her.
Milly had always been on guard, afraid of accidents that would send her back to the cold cage.
But now, she felt an unprecedented sense of relaxation. She didn’t have to worry about accidents or being sent back to the dungeon.
The existence that had once been her nightmare now gave her a strange sense of security. As if with Stacy around, she wouldn’t be in danger, and even if she were, Stacy would solve it for her.
“Really…”
A bitter feeling welled up in Milly’s heart. This was the result she wanted to avoid the most. But unknowingly, such thoughts had taken root. If this continued, she would become completely dependent on Stacy.
Speaking of Stacy, a figure sat down beside her. Their reflections on the lake overlapped eerily, yet they maintained a subtle distance.
Looking at Stacy beside her, Milly suddenly felt a sense of unreality, as if she were in an absurd dream that had no end.
“What a surprise…”
The wind carried Milly’s voice away, tearing the unspoken words apart. Watching Milly’s trembling lips, Stacy seemed to understand what she hadn’t said.
