She looked up at the red sun high in the sky. It was still early. Before the knights came out on patrol, she had to find the direction to the demon territory.
Her small feet, clad in dirty white stockings, crunched a dry twig, the sound making her stop.
She… she had completely lost her way.
“Damn it, I went the wrong way…”
Milly grabbed her hair in frustration. To find a safer way out, she had gone to the opposite side of Starlight City.
She had spent two or three extra days in the city, and now she was completely off course.
“Damn it…”
She should have stuck to the north gate. But the north gate was heavily guarded.
If she had gone that way, it would have been more dangerous. Although she still had a trump card, she didn’t want to get involved with Stacy again.
She shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts. Compared to her old self, she was becoming too emotional.
The most important thing now was to find the right way. She crouched down and drew a rough map in the mud. Her original plan was to follow the trade route to the border forest.
She had overheard some talk about a secret passage in the south. At that time, she hadn’t signed the contract with Stacy, and she was vulnerable. She had to change her route.
She stood up, looking at the road ahead.
She only knew one way to the border forest. She had to go back to the north gate and find the trade route. Once she found it, she could find her way.
“I wish I had a map…”
She sighed. Her God’s perspective allowed her to see a map of the areas she had visited, but not the places she hadn’t.
“I guess I have to backtrack.”
She should have left through the main gate. But at that time, she only thought of escaping. Now, backtracking meant she might run into a patrol. She looked at the faint electricity in her palm. With her current strength, dealing with a small patrol should be easy.
She headed north. If she was right, she should reach the trade route by tomorrow.
On the way, she picked some leaves from a bush and put them in her mouth. She hadn’t seen any fruit in the woods. She had to eat leaves to satisfy her hunger.
Since she started running, she hadn’t had a single drop of water or food. She was starving.
“Grrr…”
She rubbed her empty stomach. She had been through so much. She had missed eighteen meals in six days.
She was the king of endurance.
She hadn’t even found the bread yesterday.
She shoved another handful of leaves into her mouth. No animals here. She had to wait until she reached the border forest. Then she could eat wild fruit, or even monsters. As a demon, eating a few monsters shouldn’t be a problem.
She imagined eating roasted monsters. The smell of meat filled her nostrils.
No, no, the more she thought about it, the hungrier she got. She couldn’t fly with her injured wings. She had to hurry.
She put a final handful of leaves in her mouth and quickened her pace, heading north.
It was noon.
The sun was hot. The sky was clear. The sun was particularly strong today.
Sweat beaded on her forehead. Her wet collar clung to her neck, making her uncomfortable. Her throat was dry and painful. But she found a dirt road with fresh carriage tracks.
The tracks were fresh. A carriage had passed this morning.
She had finally found a proper road. Following it, she should find the trade route.
She breathed a sigh of relief. She found a bush and lay down to rest. She would continue after she recovered.
A breeze blew past. Chewing on the leaves, she thought of her childhood. She had been lying on straw, chewing on grass. Now, she was wearing a dress, lying in the weeds, chewing on bitter leaves.
She had been in this world for only a month, but it felt like a lifetime. Her thoughts drifted.
A creaking sound of wheels. A carriage.
She held her breath, hiding in the bush. A cargo carriage was slowly approaching.
The driver was a girl with a long blonde braid, wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat. She was humming an off-key tune in a strange accent Milly had never heard before.
“Oh, damn, the old horse is slacking off again.” The girl jumped off the carriage, brushing imaginary dust from her skirt.
“How annoying. Why did it stop? Is it hungry? Then eat the grass here. It looks pretty good.”
Damn it. Didn’t she feed the horse before setting off?
She muttered under her breath, shrinking into the bush. Then she accidentally stepped on a twig.
Crack!
The sound was piercing in the silence. Milly froze.
“Who’s there?”
The girl was instantly alert. Her green eyes locked on the bush.
