The bell for class rang, and the lecture hall was already filled with students. Even as the bell chimed, many students were still rushing in, barely making it on time.
Gern was among them. He had been so engrossed in reading at the library that he completely lost track of time.
Had it not been for the gradual departure of students around him, he might never have recalled his afternoon class.
‘Fortunately, my speed had been sufficient, allowing me to arrive at the lecture hall barely a second before class began,’ he thought.
He hastily located an empty seat in the back of their classroom and settled in.
Gern panted, great gulps of air filling his lungs, as beads of sweat traced paths down his forehead.
The academy, in its lax approach, imposed virtually no penalties for tardy students, essentially allowing them to roam freely.
Yet Gern was unlike them; he possessed a clear understanding of his objectives and the paths he needed to pursue.
Furthermore, the knowledge imparted at Theoviga Academy represented the pinnacle of the world’s wisdom, making even a single second of tardiness an unbearable loss for him.
No sooner had Gern settled himself than a delicate, fragrant breeze wafted past him, before he could even open his magic textbook.
” ‘Hmm? This scent is remarkably familiar,’ ” he murmured.
Gern turned his head, his gaze falling upon a cascade of long, ash-grey hair.
!
Gern’s eyes slowly widened in disbelief. He rubbed them, then peered again at the person beside him.
” ‘Hello, classmate,’ ” a familiar voice greeted.
The familiar voice instantly froze Gern in place. He swallowed hard, his mind involuntarily replaying the morning’s encounter.
” ‘I… I’m not well. Please, stay a bit further away from me,’ ” Gern stammered.
” ‘Oh, alright,’ ” she responded.
Aivia, the grey-haired girl, nodded compliantly, then shifted her weight slightly to the side. To even call it a ‘shift’ felt like an overstatement; she barely moved an inch.
Gern’s mouth fell open. She had indeed moved further away, but only by the slightest margin.
He was at a loss for words. ‘If I couldn’t contend with her, surely I could at least avoid her entirely,’ he thought.
Gern decided to switch seats. The moment he rose, Aivia, sitting beside him, also stood.
” ‘Seriously, what exactly are you trying to pull?’ ”
” ‘Gern, you’re delicious. I want you,’ ” Aivia purred.
Gern’s mouth twitched. Utterly defeated, he sank back into his original seat.
Seeing this, Aivia mirrored his action, settling back down and even inching a fraction closer to Gern.
” ‘Stop!’ ”
” ‘Aivia, you mustn’t cross this line!’ ”
As he spoke, Gern extended his hand, using his battle qi to draw a visible line, unequivocally separating the two of them.
Aivia blinked her large, blood-red eyes, then nodded obediently. Seeing her apparent compliance, Gern immediately let out a sigh of relief.
‘Surely, there wouldn’t be any more trouble now? Probably…?’ Gern thought, a flicker of hope in his mind.
Unseen by Gern, a delicate little knife danced playfully between Aivia’s fingers.
A faint, unsettling smile played on her lips, a grimace that was both eerie and terrifying.
” ‘Gern, it won’t hurt, I promise,’ ” Aivia mused internally.
As she thought this, Aivia slowly began to lean her body closer to him.
Bang!
At that precise moment, a resounding bang echoed through the hall, immediately followed by a girl’s voice.
” ‘Forgive me, Teacher, I’m late,’ ” the voice apologized.
Startled by the abrupt disturbance, Aivia quickly recoiled, but it was already too late.
The blonde-haired girl, who had just entered through the back door, had witnessed the entire scene unfold.
” ‘Are they…?’ ” she wondered.
A dark cloud slowly overshadowed the aqua-blue depths of her eyes.
Oblivious to the girl’s unusual demeanor, the teacher on the podium simply nodded.
” ‘Alright, find a seat. Just try not to be so late next time,’ ” he instructed.
” ‘Understood, Teacher,’ ” she replied.
The girl offered a slight bow, a silent apology to her instructor. Her gaze, however, involuntarily drifted back to Gern and Aivia.
By then, Aivia had straightened herself, appearing as though nothing out of the ordinary had occurred.
Yet from Lilia’s vantage point, their prior actions had seemed undeniably intimate, and her eyes suddenly sharpened with an icy glare.
Gern, engrossed in his magic textbook a few rows ahead, felt a sudden chill penetrate him to the bone.
He turned his head, his eyes locking with a pair of piercing aqua-blue ones.
The moment he met Lilia’s gaze, devoid of all light and warmth, Gern felt a peculiar numbness spread through him.
That look was chillingly familiar — an undeniable harbinger of her intent to kill.
” ‘Oh no, it’s the yandere version of Lilia,’ ” Gern thought, a wave of despair washing over him. ” ‘I’m utterly doomed.’ ”
Gern felt an overwhelming urge to cry, wondering what cosmic torment he had stumbled into. A sudden pang of regret struck him for returning so early.
Had he only returned a little later, he wouldn’t be caught in this predicament. Perhaps he might even have had a sweet, innocent encounter with Lilia.
” ‘Wait, why am I even entertaining such dangerous thoughts?’ ”
Gern slapped his own muddled head. To still be dwelling on such frivolous notions, he truly must have been warped by Lilia’s influence.
” ‘Teacher, may I be excused for a moment?’ ” Gern asked, raising his hand tentatively.
Gern weakly raised his hand, hoping to escape the escalating tension through this simple request. However, the teacher on the podium merely glanced at him, then spoke in a chilling tone.
” ‘Class has just begun. Hold it,’ ” he commanded curtly.
That brief, dismissive sentence shattered all of Gern’s desperate hopes. He offered an awkward chuckle, glancing between the two girls whose gazes were fixed on him, and stammered incoherently.
” ‘The weather is truly splendid, isn’t it? I really feel like taking a stroll,’ ” he blurted out.
” ‘No need to run. I want to be with you,’ ” Aivia declared.
Aivia instantly latched onto Gern’s arm, completely oblivious to the piercing gaze fixed upon them from behind.
Upon witnessing their current embrace, the light in Lilia’s eyes dimmed even further. She slowly approached the seat behind them, settling down as she spoke, each word punctuated with chilling precision.
” ‘Are you… two… very… happy?’ ”
” ‘Ah, well, I’m not happy at all, Lilia, please don’t…’ ”
Gern’s words were abruptly cut short as Aivia clamped a hand over his mouth, silencing him completely.
Lilia’s gaze then shifted to Aivia, the chilling intensity in her eyes solidifying even further.
” ‘Release him!’ ”
” ‘No, I won’t. I like him too much; I can’t let go,’ ” Aivia retorted defiantly.
” ‘So, you like him, do you?’ ” Lilia’s voice was dangerously soft.
” ‘Fine then,’ ” Lilia finished.
Lilia offered a breathtakingly beautiful smile, yet her usually vibrant aqua-blue eyes were utterly devoid of light, resembling two abyssal black holes.
” ‘Aivia, you can go straight to hell!’ ”
Boom!
Somewhere on the exterior of the classically Western-styled academy building, scorching flames suddenly erupted.
The colossal sound drew the attention of every student, teacher, and even Witch Guild member in the vicinity of the building.
From the heavens above, a phoenix’s cry resounded, followed by a woman’s piercing, mournful shriek.
Inside the lecture hall, Gern’s eyes were wide as saucers, utterly unable to comprehend the events that had just transpired.
His terror of Lilia had, at this moment, reached an unprecedented and absolute peak. He had never witnessed her in such a state; it was even more horrifying than the time she had ended his life in his previous existence.
Gern instinctively recoiled, desiring to distance himself from Lilia, only to see her face now adorned with a gentle, almost serene smile.
” ‘I… I didn’t scare you, did I?’ ” Lilia asked softly.
Gern frantically shook his head, as if he were a bobblehead doll.
” ‘That’s good then,’ ” she murmured.
Lilia let out a profound sigh of relief, as if a monumental burden had been lifted. The flames that had engulfed her body vanished entirely, and then, in a swift motion, she flung herself into Gern’s embrace.
Gone was the terrifying figure from moments ago; she was now utterly transformed, resembling nothing more than a sweet, innocent girl from next door, eager to play.
Gern’s expression remained utterly blank, his mind struggling to reconcile the terrifying entity from moments ago with the seemingly innocent girl now clinging to him.
In a daze, he thought he heard the girl whisper something into his ear.
” ‘My little Luoya, you are mine. No one, absolutely no one, will ever take you away from me,’ ” she breathed.
