Chapter 140: The Divine King’s Blessing

Gern observed the spot where the figure had vanished, lost in thought for a long time.

He felt a mix of lament and astonishment at Bape’s unwavering resolve.

Many profound words swirled within him, yet ultimately, they condensed into a single sigh.

“He was a true man.”

His gaze fell upon the longsword on the ground, then shifted apologetically towards Lilia as he recalled the blade Bape had shattered with a single thrust.

“Um… Lilia, I’m sorry, the sword you gave me broke.”

Gern scratched his head, a flush of embarrassment coloring his cheeks. He had grown quite fond of that sword.

Its materials and runic enchantments were of the highest caliber.

At market value, such a treasure would easily fetch over a dozen gold coins.

He had always been reluctant to use it for fear of damage, never imagining it would meet its end here today.

Yet, there was nothing he could have done. He had been facing a being at the peak of the sixth tier.

With just one more step, they could have ascended to the seventh tier, far surpassing Gern’s own power in his previous life.

‘What a pity for such a fine sword,’ Gern sighed inwardly, his eyes fixed on the broken blade in his hand.

Lilia observed Gern’s forlorn expression, then gently patted his shoulder.

“It’s just a sword. When we get back, I’ll forge you another.”

“Cough, that would be… quite expensive, wouldn’t it?”

Lilia offered a radiant smile.

“But compared to you, this sword is truly nothing at all.”

“Hmm?” Gern paused, taken aback. Lilia’s words deeply stirred something within him, leaving a sweet sensation in his heart.

‘Oh no, am I truly being ‘conquered’ by Lilia? This feeling… it’s not bad at all.’

“Wait! What am I even thinking?!”

Gern lightly struck his own head, convinced his brain had malfunctioned to entertain such wild thoughts recently.

He struggled to regain control, forcing his attention back to the longsword lying on the ground.

Gern bent down and picked up the longsword, its surface covered in intricate black patterns. The blade felt chilling to the touch, imbued with a potent aura of Chaos power.

He weighed it in his hand. While its weight and balance were far inferior to the sword Lilia had given him, its material seemed exceptionally unique.

It had withstood prolonged erosion within the Chaos, remaining intact—undoubtedly an extraordinary artifact.

Just then, Rex and Black approached, leading the remaining members of their expedition team.

They had witnessed the preceding events with perfect clarity, and the ability to resurrect from such a state could only be described as a divine miracle.

With profound reverence, they glanced at the spot where Bape had vanished, offering a solemn bow. Their eyes then settled on the sword in Gern’s hand.

“This is…?”

Black scrutinized the longsword in Gern’s grasp, a growing sense of familiarity stirring within him.

Suddenly, a flash of insight ignited in his mind; he realized where he had seen this sword before.

It was depicted in the murals and ancient texts of the Olga Kingdom—the very sword that formed the objective of their current expedition.

“Captain, quick, take a look! Isn’t this the sword we’ve been searching for?”

Rex stepped forward, meticulously examining the sword in Gern’s hand. A sharp glint briefly flickered in his eyes.

However, he immediately let out a sigh and spoke.

“It’s ‘Annihilation.’ But it has been thoroughly corrupted by Chaos. An ordinary person who touches it would likely have their mind immediately eroded.”

He turned to Gern, stating with a hint of solemnity.

“Mister Gern, since you are unaffected by it, perhaps this treasured sword should remain with you for now.”

Gern nodded, offering no refusal. His own weapon had been destroyed during the recent battle.

This sword would perfectly compensate for the drop in his combat effectiveness. Moreover, he sensed that the blade had been completely corrupted by Chaos power, allowing him to freely unleash its chaotic energies at will.

This meant he wouldn’t need to rely on his own Vitality to fight. Instead, he could directly draw upon the surrounding Chaos power, which was boundless here—a resource too abundant to waste.

The other divine weapon, however, showed minimal signs of corruption, likely due to the special materials used in its creation.

Even someone without a Holy Light Charm could wield that long spear without suffering significant adverse effects.

This fact brought considerable relief to Rex and his companions. They intended to retrieve the long spear and return it to the Olga Kingdom.

However, since Gern and Lilia had jointly bought time and ultimately defeated Bape, Rex knew he needed to consult Gern before claiming the spear.

“Mister Gern, may we please take the Meteorite Spear? It belonged to an elder of the Olga Kingdom.”

Gern, never one for pretense, simply nodded.

He then casually sheathed ‘Annihilation’ at his waist, where his own sword had once rested.

Several Olga Kingdom team members stepped forward, their expressions solemn, to carefully lift the ‘Meteorite Spear’ which still stood upright. They handled it with utmost caution, as if it were a sacred relic.

Rex and his group composed themselves and inquired about the exact events that had transpired. Gern, unwilling to hide anything, revealed that he possessed the Divine King’s blessing.

Upon hearing this news, they were all profoundly shocked.

It was the blessing of the Divine King, who represented an object of unwavering faith for every person in the Olga Kingdom.

With the Divine King’s miracle manifesting before their very eyes, how could they not be moved to excitement?

Rex, in particular, who led the group, was so overcome with emotion that tears welled in his eyes.

“Lord Gern, is what you say truly real?”

Even the tone of his voice had grown respectful.

Gern nodded, acknowledging Rex’s question.

Thump…

In an instant, every member from the Olga Kingdom dropped to one knee, their faces etched with profound solemnity.

“By the Divine King above! We shall fulfill our duties to the Olga Kingdom!”

The sudden surge of reverence from the group momentarily startled Gern. He thought to help them up, but saw them all rise to their feet.

“Lord Gern, since you have received the Divine King’s blessing, a place of honor will surely await you in the Olga Kingdom’s future.”

“Huh?” Gern scratched his head. Though surprised, he found the situation within the realm of his understanding.

He had heard that the Divine King held a status in the Olga Kingdom akin to that of the Holy Light Goddess within the Holy Light Church.

Therefore, the reaction of these individuals was, in fact, quite normal.

“Lord Gern, what are your plans next?”

Being addressed as ‘Lord Gern’ so suddenly made Gern feel a little unaccustomed and somewhat distant.

“Rex, just call me as you did before. I’m not quite used to this.”

“This…” Rex appeared troubled. After all, this was a custom established by the kingdom long ago, and he couldn’t simply disregard it.

Seeing that he couldn’t persuade him, Gern simply gave up. ‘Let them call me whatever they wish.’

“Rex, I’m heading to the east of the city to find something very important. Will you all come with me?”

“Of course.”

“We shall protect Lord Gern with our lives.”

Gern nodded silently, unsure whether revealing his divine blessing had been the right decision.

He sensed the changes within the Kindling in his body. There was a distinct resonance between Kindlings, and the direction of the next one indeed pointed eastward.
