Chapter 86: The Phoenix and the Blizzards

The arena possessed an inherent hidden function, one that prevented onlookers from observing the events unfolding within. Aware of Gern’s desire to conceal their true identity, Lilia thoughtfully activated this feature.

“Alright, Little Luoya,” Lilia chirped, her eyes narrowed playfully and brimming with an eager glint. “Now there’s no one else here, is there? Ready to practice with me?”

Gern felt a shiver of apprehension. Yet, for the sake of honing her magic… she resolved to push through!

The next moment, a white light enveloped Gern. Her body began to shrink rapidly, quickly settling into the appearance of a young girl. Gern, in her dragon girl form, had grown considerably compared to before, now showing a clear trend towards a more mature, ‘older sister’ aesthetic.

The unfamiliar sensation in her chest, coupled with the startling emptiness between her legs, left Gern feeling distinctly unsettled. Her cheeks flushed with a faint blush. Taking several deep breaths, she managed to compose herself slightly.

“Hmm? Little Luoya is truly adorable, isn’t she? Little Luoya, how about you don’t turn back into a boy from now on?”

“Ah? No way!”

“Then… what’s the reason Little Luoya insists on turning into a boy?”

“Uh, well, ahem…”

Gern coughed awkwardly, stiffly changing the subject. “Miss Lilia, perhaps we should begin our training now.”

“Alright, alright.” Lilia pouted with a hint of disappointment. If Little Luoya wasn’t willing to share, she wouldn’t press the matter, lest she upset her.

“Are you ready?”

“Yes.”

Gern nodded, already assuming a fighting stance.

“Hmph, then… here I come!”

Lilia let out a melodious chuckle, and a fireball hurtled directly towards Gern’s face.

Gern’s eyes narrowed slightly. Recalling the knowledge her teacher had imparted in class, her hands instinctively began to shift. A current of energy seemed to course through her body, ultimately converging in her palms. Then, Gern raised her hand and launched an ice bullet. The two collided, dissipating into the air.

“Oh? Not bad at all.”

Lilia smiled. That fireball had been roughly half her power. Seeing Gern neutralize it with such ease, she decided to intensify her assault.

Her mana rapidly coalesced, and a multitude of raindrops formed around her. Faintly, the rumble of thunder could be heard. These seemingly innocuous raindrops were not to be underestimated, for each one pulsed with lightning magic.

Gern had suffered greatly from this particular spell in her past life, naturally knowing the destructive power contained within these droplets. It was worth noting that this was a magic Lilia had created herself, and later refined considerably, showcasing her truly terrifying magical talent.

“Go!”

At her command, the water droplets encircling Lilia shot towards Gern’s face. Gern’s mind raced, desperate to find a way to counter this move.

‘I’ve got it!’

‘Ice magic!’

To rely on a single, potent strategy was Gern’s current mindset. No matter how formidable the magical energy contained within these droplets, she would simply freeze them all, rendering even the most powerful mana inert. Indeed, the tactic proved remarkably effective; the water droplets froze mid-air, then shattered as they fell onto the arena floor.

Subsequently, the two continuously probed the limits of each other’s power. Perhaps it was due to the exceptionally high magical talent of Gern’s current body, or perhaps Lilia was intentionally holding back, but Gern subtly gained the upper hand.

After several rounds of exchange, Lilia’s gaze upon Gern sharpened with recognition of her burgeoning power. Gern was learning incredibly fast in this engagement. Because she was a dragon by nature, her strength had already reached the level of a Third-tier Mage. Even if Gern didn’t cultivate, the mana within her body would naturally break through. This was the terrifying inherent power of dragons. At this point, Gern was essentially a Third-tier Mage, lacking only in magical experience.

Having undergone Lilia’s sparring, she had now nearly achieved complete mastery over this power. Now, even Lilia felt considerable pressure fighting Gern; she began to take the fight more seriously.

The golden-haired girl rapidly formed hand seals, her lips parting softly.

“A hundred birds pay homage to the phoenix, myriad feathers return to their origin, scorching karmic flames, consume… this body, rise!”

No sooner had she spoken than Lilia’s entire body erupted in roaring flames. Behind her, something seemed to shatter the void to emerge. A colossal shadow gradually materialized from the void behind Lilia. It was a magnificent firebird, constructed entirely of flames, its immense size engulfing Lilia entirely.

Gern’s eyes widened abruptly. Memories from her past life began to merge with her current reality. She swallowed hard, her body trembling involuntarily. She distinctly remembered a time in her past life when, just as she was about to cripple Lilia, Lilia had unleashed this very move, instantly turning the tide of battle. Had it not been for the inherently peculiar cultivation techniques of the Heretic God Cult, she would have been slain by Lilia then.

Now, facing Lilia’s deadly technique once more, fear was an inevitable reaction for Gern. In reality, Lilia had held back somewhat with this move, as she couldn’t truly harm her beloved Little Luoya. But even so, the sheer force was still terrifying. Under such pressure, Gern forced herself to calm down.

She wasn’t without a countermeasure, however. The Boundless Wind and Snow technique she had previously comprehended had yet to be used. Now was the perfect opportunity to test its power.

Gern’s eyes narrowed slightly, already recalling the sensations she had experienced when comprehending Boundless Wind and Snow. She felt as if she had appeared upon an endless expanse of snow, where biting cold winds whipped against her cheeks. She seemed to merge with the entire snowfield. The next moment, the silver-haired girl’s eyes snapped open, a flicker of light sparking within her golden eyes.

Wind and snow howled, painting the entire arena in a pristine white.

Lilia paused, her gaze sweeping over her surroundings, a faint, solitary smile curving her lips. “It seems my Little Luoya has mastered the power of a domain. Well, I can’t afford to show weakness, can I?”

As Lilia thought this, the phoenix behind her soared skyward. It then collided with the barrier-covered ceiling, and the entire bird plummeted like a kite with a severed string, crashing to the ground.

Seeing this, both Lilia’s and Gern’s eyelids twitched in unison, uncertain how to describe the current scene.

“Ahem, so… perhaps you should try again?”

“N-no, it’s fine.”

Lilia’s cheeks flushed with embarrassment. She had forgotten that this was an enclosed space, making her skill difficult to fully unleash. Fortunately, she still had ample magical reserves, sufficient to handle any subsequent developments. Lilia then stepped forward with one foot, and the phoenix on the ground instantly vanished, reappearing behind her.

With the phoenix’s return, a scorching wave swept across the entire arena. Flames began to spread from Lilia’s feet, contending with Gern’s power of ice and snow. Each of them occupied half of the arena, and the atmosphere on the field had reached a fever pitch.
