Chapter 159: A Confrontation and a Troubling Dream

In a flash of lightning, a longsword suddenly appeared, held before Aivia. Feeling the lethal intent emanating from the blade’s edge, she abruptly halted, her gaze fixed on Lilia with a puzzled expression.

“Mr. Gern, what is the meaning of this—”

“Enough idle talk! Behold my sword!”

*Swish*

The longsword lunged fiercely towards Aivia. Her reflexes proved equally swift; a subtle flutter of the wings on her back propelled her several yards away.

Lilia watched the grey-haired Young Woman soaring in the sky, letting out a disdainful ‘tsk’. She made no further attempt to pursue.

After all, Aivia was her classmate, and while their emotions might run high, neither would genuinely seek the other’s life. However, some things simply had to be done, like thoroughly discouraging Aivia.

She looked up at Aivia in the sky, pointing her longsword in the Young Woman’s direction, and spoke coldly.

“From now on, if I ever see you pestering Ger— *cough*, I’ll flay you alive!”

As Lilia’s voice faded, the aura of her Fourth-tier cultivation surged forth.

Aivia was startled by Gern’s rapid progress, but she also detected a subtle oddity in ‘Gern’s’ words. ‘Was it merely a delusion?’

It didn’t quite feel like one. Aivia’s heart was filled with doubt; today’s Gern truly seemed different, though she couldn’t quite articulate how.

Yet, with her current cultivation inferior to ‘Gern’s’, her only recourse for obtaining that sweet, delectable blood was through underhanded tactics. For now, it was best to retreat and await the opportune moment.

Aivia felt a profound reluctance, but there was no other choice at present.

“Mr. Gern, I shall take my leave now. That medicine will replenish your vitality; it will be very useful for you in your current state.”

Aivia cast one last look at the three figures atop the city wall, a bitter pang in her heart. ‘If only I were Xiao Ying, I could approach Gern without restraint and lavish him with affection.’

‘But now… alas.’ Aivia let out a long sigh. Suddenly, she remembered something: some simple items sold at the academy. She had indeed prepared a few before, but the problem now was that she wasn’t of the Serpent race, making it impossible to replicate Xiao Ying’s appearance.

“Ugh, this is so annoying. Never mind, I’ll think about it later.” Aivia shook her head, her mood exceedingly irritated. With a slight movement of the blood-red wings on her back, she vanished into the distance.

Lilia and Gern, observing the situation from the city wall, exchanged glances.

Both saw the amusement in the other’s eyes.

“Hmm? What are you two older sisters laughing about?”

Xiao Ying innocently tilted her head, looking up at the two inexplicably smiling women.

“Alright, little one, don’t trouble yourself with such things.”

Gern couldn’t help but step forward and gently stroke Xiao Ying’s head, only to be met with a fierce glare from Lilia.

“*Cough*, Lilia, are you even jealous of a child? You know I harbor no ill intentions towards her.”

“Hmph, what if I am jealous? I like being jealous. In the future, you’d best stay far away from those disreputable women.”

Gern’s mouth twitched, and she muttered softly to herself. ‘What is this? We haven’t even confirmed our relationship yet…’

“Hm?”

“Let’s go, we’re returning to the Klett Kingdom right now to get our marriage certificate. I’ll personally swear my vows in the cathedral before the entire nation!”

“Eh!? Wait, wait, wait, Lilia, you—”

“Hmph, once a soul contract is signed, we can never be separated in this lifetime. Don’t even think about backing out!”

Gern gazed at Lilia, who was acting like a petulant young woman, a mix of exasperation and amusement on her face. This broke Gern’s preconceived notions of Lilia, finding her both adorable and novel in this state.

Time passed quickly. Because Xiao Ying clung to Lilia so persistently, the two women had no choice but to sleep separately. Lilia took Gern’s room, and Gern went to Lilia’s room. Lilia even deliberately transformed into her Dragonwoman form, as she found it more comfortable to sleep that way.

Night always felt long. Lilia, feeling a little bored, began to inquire with Xiao Ying about past events.

“Big Sister Gern, it was thanks to Big Sister Aivia back then. Otherwise, I would have died when the city fell.”

As Xiao Ying recounted the events, a trace of fear still lingered on her face. Clearly, she had been quite terrified at the time.

Fortunately, Aivia had helped her, leading Xiao Ying through the encirclement of Chaos creatures, which allowed Xiao Ying to survive.

Upon hearing this, Lilia’s opinion of Aivia softened slightly. The woman might be infuriating, but when it truly mattered, she stepped up, upholding Theoviga Academy’s honor.

Gern, too, secretly pricked up her ears, silently approving of Aivia’s actions in her heart.

“No approving.”

“Uh…”

Gern helplessly rubbed her forehead. This damned soul contract truly was her undoing.

Meanwhile, Xiao Ying continued her story to Lilia.

“Big Sister Gern, I noticed that Big Sister Aivia’s state seemed a bit off then.”

“Oh? Off? How so?”

Lilia’s curiosity was piqued, and she pressed for details.

“Well… I just felt like, at that time, Big Sister Aivia was very wild, a bit…”

Here, Xiao Ying faltered, stammering as if struggling to find the right words to describe Aivia’s state, or perhaps deliberating whether to reveal the situation to ‘Gern’.

“A bit what? Don’t always leave your sentences unfinished, *whine*…”

After much hesitation, Xiao Ying finally decided to disclose what had happened.

“At the time, I thought Big Sister Aivia looked just like those terrifying monsters.”

“It scared me terribly. It wasn’t until these past two days, away from those monsters, that Big Sister Aivia started to recover quite a bit.”

“Is that so…”

Lilia nodded, wondering if Aivia had been contaminated by some Heretic God corruption, which would explain her previous condition. Gern shared the same view.

She had seen many such cases before, but for some reason, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Aivia’s situation wasn’t so simple. Unable to pinpoint the problem immediately, Gern stopped dwelling on the topic.

Subsequently, Lilia and Xiao Ying continued their desultory chat. As Gern listened, a wave of drowsiness gradually washed over her, and her consciousness slowly faded.

In the darkness, Gern walked onward. Slowly, she forgot herself, forgot everything, her consciousness completely returning to chaos.

She saw herself as a female infant, born into a very wealthy family. Her family was happy and complete. Her father was the King of the Kingdom, and her mother was the Queen.

She also had an older brother, and the entire family doted on this new little life. Her childhood was like being steeped in a honey pot, full and utterly sweet.

Gradually, she grew older, surrounded by many playmates. She was happy, sharing her toys with them, but she didn’t know when it started, these playmates around her suddenly began to distance themselves from her.

At first, she was puzzled and wanted to question these children, but they avoided her as if she were a plague god.

She cried and went to her mother, but her mother told her… “Those children, you shouldn’t associate with them anymore.”

She was bewildered and lost, but she nodded and agreed to her mother’s words. She had no playmates, no one to talk to.

Her older brother, she didn’t know when, was never seen again, and she never saw her parents’ smiles anymore. As time continued to flow, she became less lively, instead growing rather withdrawn.

Until that day, she witnessed a scene that would forever be etched in her memory.
