Chapter 151: A Tense Welcome and Lingering Aches

A few days later, the group finally arrived at the Fox race’s border.

From a distance, the Chaos Land had already spread to the Fox race’s border pass, only a few kilometers away.

Gern had initially feared that the Fox race’s border had fallen. However, as they drew closer, he saw the Fox race’s banners fluttering atop the city walls and their soldiers patrolling the surrounding area.

Everything here appeared orderly, bearing no resemblance to a region ravaged by disaster.

Just then, a squad of Fox race soldiers, responsible for outer perimeter security, spotted them and cautiously encircled them.

However, as their eyes fell upon the tattered remnants of Olga Kingdom’s standard-issue equipment worn by Rex and the others, their expressions shifted.

More specifically, upon sensing the dangerous aura emanating from Gern—an aura indistinguishable from that of Chaos creatures—their vigilance turned to startled suspicion.

“Who are you?!”

The patrol squad leader shouted, his spear held firmly before him, wary of any further mishap.

“We are an exploration team from the Olga Kingdom. As for…”

Rex stepped forward, his voice weary yet resolute.

“As for these two, they are the brave warriors who dealt with the Chaos core. Without them, we would not have been able to destroy the core, and this disaster would never have ended.”

The squad leader eyed Gern and the others with suspicion, finding it difficult to believe.

Behind him, several Fox race soldiers exchanged glances, their eyes reflecting a mix of shock, awe, and disbelief.

Although these soldiers were unaware of the Chaos Crystal’s true resilience, they could surmise that the Chaos Crystal at the core of the disaster could not have been easily destroyed.

Harboring a sliver of doubt, they swiftly dispatched someone to report back.

Not long after, the urgent sound of hooves echoed through the air.

Adorned in silver light armor stained with dirt and soot, Mina herself rode swiftly, flanked by her escorts.

The moment she saw Gern and the others, especially Gern’s conspicuous black arm and the gruesome battle scars adorning everyone, she dismounted immediately and hurried towards them.

“Gern! Lilia! Captain Rex! How are you all…”

Mina’s voice was thick with uncontrollable joy and a catch of emotion.

She meticulously checked each person for injuries. As her gaze fell upon Gern and Lilia’s intimate closeness, her heart inexplicably twinged with pain.

It felt as though something vital had been snatched from the depths of her soul by Gern.

Mina shook her head, convinced that her recent hardships must have been causing her to hallucinate.

“Thank you. We owe it all to you.”

Her gaze swept over the battle-worn team, noting the exhaustion and sorrow etched in their eyes.

“You have endured much. On behalf of the Fox race, I thank you!”

Mina bowed deeply, and behind her, all the Fox race soldiers saluted in unison.

Gern shook his head, intending to speak, but a wave of dizziness washed over him, making his body sway. Lilia quickly steadied him.

“Gern…?”

“I… I’m fine…”

Gern shook his head again, a faint ache reverberating through his arm.

‘This must be a lingering side effect,’ he thought.

“Gern, perhaps we should return to the academy first.”

“It’s fine. As long as I don’t use the Primordial Chaos Art, I’ll be alright for now.”

“Hmm, alright then.”

Lilia knew Gern spoke the truth and refrained from pressing the matter further.

The degree of Chaos power corruption Gern suffered currently had no complete cure. Even if the Pope of the Holy Light Church were to intervene, the only solution they could offer Gern would be amputation.

This method was indeed viable; possessing the Kindling, he could allow the injured area to slowly recover, provided he avoided using his male form.

At this thought, Gern’s expression crumpled once more.

If he chose this path, it meant he would have to present himself as a female for a considerable period.

His demeanor already leaned towards femininity. If he truly followed this method, wouldn’t he become completely feminized once his body healed?

‘Hiss… No!’

‘This won’t do, absolutely not!’

Secretly listening to Gern’s inner thoughts, a smile never ceased to play on Lilia’s lips.

‘Gern, wouldn’t it be nice to become a girl? That way, I could always call you Little Luoya from now on.’

“Not little! I’m not little!”

‘Mm-hmm, our Luoya is the biggest.’

‘Gern… is something wrong with you, or is something wrong with me?’

Observing the increasingly radiant, almost eerie smile on Lilia’s face, Gern felt a chill creep down his spine.

Subconsciously, he tried to distance himself from Lilia. The moment he shifted his foot back, Lilia immediately pressed close, her arm naturally hooking into his uninjured right arm with an unyielding grip.

“Gern~ What are you so afraid of?”

Lilia tilted her face up, her blue eyes shimmering with a dangerous yet captivating light, her voice sickly sweet.

“Don’t forget, our souls are linked now. I can feel everything you’re thinking.”

Watching Gern’s pallid face, Lilia chuckled softly with satisfaction. She leaned in close to his ear, whispering in a breathy voice audible only to the two of them.

“Rest assured, Gern… no matter what you become, I’ll love you the most. Whether in our past lives or this one, this expression of wanting to escape but being unable to is the most~ adorable~.”

The warm breath caressed his ear, yet Gern felt as though a venomous snake’s tongue had licked him, sending shivers down his spine.

“Cough, cough!”

Mina, observing the overly “intimate” and strangely tense interaction between the two, couldn’t help but clear her throat, disrupting the alluring yet perilous atmosphere.

Although she couldn’t discern Lilia’s exact words, she clearly saw Gern’s expression, which screamed, ‘I wish to perish right here.’

“Mister Gern appears to be in need of rest. Your accommodations are prepared; please follow me.”

Mina strove to maintain her princely composure, yet as her gaze flickered to Lilia’s arm tightly entwined with Gern’s, that inexplicable pang of bitterness resurfaced within her.

Forcing her eyes away, she turned and led the way.

Lilia watched Mina walk away, a seed of doubt sprouting in her mind. ‘Were those scenes from Gern’s memories truly real?’ she wondered.

Ever since she had formed a contract with Gern, she had been able to glimpse fragments of his memories, from both his past life and his current one.

Similarly, Gern could also see her memories, though he didn’t fully comprehend the soul contract yet.

At this moment, the others had not yet fully recovered from the recent battle, and Gern, naturally, was in no mood to concern himself with such matters.

Nearby, Rex, Black, and the others exchanged knowing glances. Tactfully, they fell back a few paces, creating space for the three individuals whose interactions were steeped in a subtle tension.

Black even mouthed something silently to Rex.

“A love triangle?”

Rex shrugged helplessly, responding with his eyes.

“Young people’s affairs, best not to interfere.”
