Chapter 161: A King’s Fury and a Fateful Invitation

She saw a pair of filthy hands reaching for her. The speed was terrifying, allowing no time to react.

In that critical moment, a streak of light shot forth from the distance.

With a whoosh, a surge of wild energy instantly ripped the roof off the study, scattering bookshelves across the floor.

A tall man, as if materializing from thin air, swiftly intercepted the young man’s demonic grasp.

Stunned, she stared at the figure standing before her, her face a mask of astonishment.

“Father King?”

“Little Lilia, hide behind me!”

The tall man spoke coldly, his body wreathed in roaring flames, a sure sign of his readiness for battle.

She gazed intently at the figure before her, a flicker of longing appearing in her cerulean eyes.

“Philip! You unfilial son! Prepare to die!”

The tall man raised his longsword, and though the fierce flames scorched Philip’s body, his expression remained utterly unchanged.

“Father, you’ve grown old.”

“Hmph!”

The tall man let out a cold snort, plunging his longsword into Philip’s chest, yet not a single drop of blood fell.

Only black mist, continuously rising, was visible.

Philip’s expression slowly began to contort. With the longsword still impaled in his chest, he met the tall man’s gaze.

“Father King, this world needs a new order. Chaos… might not be such a bad path after all.”

“Nonsense! Philip, look at yourself now, look at what you just did.”

“That was your Queen Mother!”

“There was no other way. If I hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t have been able to draw you out, Father King. Besides, isn’t Queen Mother standing perfectly fine right there?”

He pointed to the Queen, who stood like a marionette, the sickly smile on his lips growing more pronounced.

“You! You!”

“Beast!”

His chest heaved with rage. With a surge of power, the hand holding the sword cleaved Philip directly in two.

“Hahahaha, Father King, you’re still as arrogant as ever. Chaos is the future; will you remain so stubbornly blind?”

“Beast! I have no son like you!”

“Oh dear, it seems our discussion has broken down then.”

Philip’s voice echoed as the surrounding black mist surged and reformed.

Soon, a complete Philip stood once again before the tall man.

“Father King, I am truly disappointed by your decision.”

“You’ve seen it yourself. My perfect body is capable of resisting the calamities that come with the advent of Chaos.”

“Don’t you understand?”

“Madman… madman! Philip, truly look at yourself. Is this the path you’ve chosen? To turn yourself into this monstrous form? Are you even truly yourself anymore!”

“Ah, well, I had originally hoped to use this opportunity to reminisce with you, Father. Very well, then, we shall meet again another day.”

“I hope to see the day you embrace Chaos.”

“Queen Mother, let us go.”

A thick fog materialized, and the tall man reacted with extreme swiftness, reaching out to shield her.

Once the black mist dissipated, only the two of them remained in the study, surrounded by scattered books.

She hugged her knees, feeling the surrounding temperature turn chillingly cold.

Icy rain splattered on her cheeks, mercilessly stealing her body heat.

One morning, Gern jolted awake from her sleep, sitting upright and gasping for air.

Her heart pounded fiercely from the intense emotions, and the clothes on her back and the bedding were already drenched in cold sweat.

A single tear slowly traced a path down her cheek.

‘This is… Lilia’s memory?’

Gern pressed her hand to her forehead, the overwhelming emotional impact leaving her unable to fully recover from the recent dream.

“Gern… are you alright?”

Lilia had just woken up herself.

“I’m fine, Lilia, those were…”

“Oh, just some childhood memories.”

Lilia clearly didn’t wish to speak of it, so Gern didn’t press further.

For a moment, both fell silent, a mutual understanding passing between them as they refrained from dwelling on anything.

Several days later, Lilia and Gern stood atop a high platform, with Xiao Ying and Aivia beside them.

It had been some time since they left the academy, and now it was time to return.

Xiao Ying tugged at Gern’s sleeve, appearing somewhat fearful and worried.

“Sister Gern, are we really leaving the Beastman Tribe?”

The unknown outside world filled her with a hint of fear.

She didn’t want to leave this place, nor did she want Gern to leave.

Gern knelt down, affectionately stroking Xiao Ying’s head as she offered comfort.

“Xiao Ying, big sis… *cough*, I mean, big brother came from the outside. Now that things are done, it’s time to go back.”

“Mmm…”

She pursed her lips, her body trembling slightly. She looked up, a glimmer of tears in her eyes, yet her gaze met Gern’s with unwavering determination.

“Sister Gern, I’ll go with you.”

“Alright, then let’s go…”

Gern once again patted Xiao Ying’s head. As an exceptional individual, she naturally understood that Xiao Ying would not have good prospects remaining in the Beastman Tribe.

It would be better to take her back to Theoviga Academy, especially since she wouldn’t have to pay tuition there.

“Hold it, four of you!”

Just as the four prepared to depart, the sound of hooves echoed from a distance. Soon, a warrior on a warhorse blocked their path.

Dressed in standard Fox race knight armor, the heavy plating highlighted the status and position of the person before them.

“May I ask who you are?”

“Oh, I am a subordinate of Her Highness. She specifically sent me to invite you to the upcoming celebration banquet.”

‘A celebration banquet?’

The group exchanged glances, a little confused. At present, the Chaos creatures hadn’t been fully cleared, and the threat from the Chaos Land still loomed.

‘Holding a celebration banquet now felt a little like popping champagne halfway through a battle.’

“Sir, we have urgent matters to attend to and cannot linger here.”

Gern politely declined, yet noticed the knight’s troubled expression.

“If you were to leave, I wouldn’t be able to report back to Her Highness. How about this: you come with me for a short while? It won’t take much time.”

“Hmm… what do you all think?”

Gern and Lilia exchanged glances, both seeing a hint of resignation in the other’s eyes.

They had originally intended to return to the academy as quickly as possible to address the issue with Gern’s left arm and report the details of their mission.

However, Mina’s warm invitation, coupled with the news that a branch of the Holy Light Church wanted to examine her body, made it impossible for them to refuse immediately.

After all, destroying the Chaos Crystal was a significant feat, and it was understandable for the Fox race to want to express their gratitude. Moreover, the Holy Light Church truly possessed unique expertise in purifying Chaos corruption.

“I have no objections.”

“None…”

Lilia and Aivia shrugged, indicating that they would defer to Gern’s decision.

“Very well, then. We’ll go with you for now.”

“Excellent, thank you, Sir Gern.”

The knight cast a grateful glance at Gern, then promptly led the way for the group.
