Chapter 143: The Agony of Kindling and Lilia’s Twisted Schemes

Hoo~ Hoo~

It hurt so much.

I can’t take it anymore.

Gern’s voice trembled, her body involuntarily emitting sounds that could easily be misinterpreted.

The two Kindling powers within her waged an incessant war, a torment far worse than anything Lilia had ever inflicted upon her.

It felt as if her stomach had been hollowed out, then fed into a meat grinder, every cell of her being shredded into mincemeat.

Ah—!

Gern was disoriented by the pain, yet she forced herself to muster a sliver of consciousness, sinking her teeth into her own smooth forearm.

Her pristine teeth instantly pierced her flesh, and blood gushed forth, staining them crimson.

Drip.

Drip.

A deathly silence enveloped her, broken only by Gern’s faint whimpers and the rhythmic *drip-drip* of blood echoing on the ground.

Gradually, Gern felt her eyelids grow impossibly heavy, as if weighed down by a thousand pounds.

The battle between the two Kindling powers within her had not yet ceased. After an unknown duration, her consciousness began to wane.

‘No—hiss, I can’t—I mustn’t—hiss, I mustn’t sleep…’

If she were to fall asleep now, she didn’t know if she would ever wake up again.

Should her consciousness completely fade, with no one to suppress the Kindling within her, she would risk exploding from within.

At that point, not only would resurrection be impossible, but the Kindling itself would be scattered into countless fragments.

Fortunately, the last remaining Divine King’s blessing within her activated. A sacred radiance enveloped the two Kindling powers, causing their rampant energies to gradually subside, finally allowing Gern a moment’s respite.

The pain slowly receded, and the most agonizing period finally passed. What had felt like an eternity had, in reality, lasted less than ten minutes.

Gern exhaled softly. The mouthful of foul blood she had coughed up earlier had now been completely corroded by Chaos power, reducing it to a pile of black stains. On her forearm, a clear row of teeth marks stood out prominently. The horrifying bite marks were chilling to behold.

Had Gern applied a little more force, she likely would have bitten off a chunk of her own flesh.

Such a minor injury didn’t warrant the use of a healing scroll; that would be far too wasteful.

Fortunately, Gern had the foresight to stock up on numerous survival supplies before setting out, allowing her to treat simple wounds herself.

After tending to her wound, a flash of white light enveloped Gern, and the silver-haired girl transformed back into the black-haired Gern.

“What? You’re asking why he didn’t transform back immediately?”

While the Kindling’s various forms could indeed recover on their own when not in use, their recovery speed was incredibly slow.

Her Serpentwoman form was a prime example; due to severe injuries, Gern had been forced to wait for it to recover naturally.

However, if Gern applied certain treatments, he could significantly accelerate the healing process.

The Dragon Girl form was Gern’s most powerful combat state, and he certainly didn’t want it to fail him at a crucial moment.

Stepping out of the room alone, Gern found all eyes fixed upon him, everyone curious about what had transpired between the two.

At the front of the crowd, Lilia’s gaze swept behind Gern, but she failed to spot the fiery red fox.

“Gern, what happened? Where is Miss Sherry?”

“Alas, Miss Sherry…”

Gern’s words trailed off, a reluctance to speak of the recent events evident in his tone.

As if sensing his feelings, Lilia nodded and reached out, pulling Gern into an embrace.

“That expression… let me guess, something happened to Miss Sherry, didn’t it?”

“Mm…”

Though it was impolite, Lilia felt a slight wave of relief at his answer. Aivia alone was already troublesome enough; she certainly didn’t want another rival.

She patted Gern’s back, continuing her soothing words.

“It’s alright, it’s alright. Miss Sherry has held on for so long; let her rest.”

Gern nodded silently. Though it was his first encounter with Miss Sherry, she had left an exceptionally profound impression on him.

It was an impression etched deep into his very being.

He gently pulled away from Lilia’s embrace, needing a moment to compose himself. Lilia didn’t follow, remaining rooted to her spot as she watched Gern walk away.

A shadow, however, fell over her gaze.

She could feel that Gern’s aura had grown stronger, likely having inherited Miss Sherry’s legacy.

If this continued, Gern’s achievements would undoubtedly soar, and she would have to strive to keep pace with him.

Alternatively, she could find an opportunity to imprison Gern and mold him completely into her own image. That way, no matter how outstanding he became, he would never escape her grasp.

‘Hmm… how exactly can I make Gern completely mine?’

‘I’ve got it!’

She suddenly recalled the potion she had stumbled upon in Gern’s dormitory courtyard some time ago.

Lilia still remembered the potency of that item.

If she ever got another chance, she’d acquire another bottle. Then, she’d simply pin Gern against the wall and implant commands in him, making him love only her.

A triumphant curve graced Lilia’s lips at the thought.

Right, that item seemed to originate from the Heretic God Cult. It appeared she would need to clear out more of their strongholds in the future.

Lilia secretly resolved in her heart that once the academy vacation began, she would ferret out all the Heretic God Cult’s dens within the kingdom.

She would procure at least ten or eight hypnosis potions to keep Gern in a constant hypnotic state.

Then, she would engrave commands of obedience and exclusive affection for her into his consciousness, branding him as her own…

‘Hehehe, that’s what I’ll do when we get back!’

Gern remained utterly oblivious to Lilia’s peculiar behavior, still lost in the recent memories.

He gazed up at the dark sky, a sense of uncertainty weighing on his heart.

Miss Sherry’s strength was immense; Gern had sensed it even during their initial interactions.

Yet, if such a powerful individual—or rather, an entire group—had failed in their rebellion against Chaos, could he truly succeed?

He stared at his own hands, standing in silence for a long while.

It wasn’t until Rex and the others approached, curious about the situation, that Gern finally snapped out of his reverie.

“Lord Gern, what’s wrong? And where is Miss Sherry?”

“Brother, haven’t I told you not to call me ‘Lord’?”

Rex chuckled helplessly, promising to correct himself next time.

“So, what exactly happened? You look so troubled. Did you run into some difficulty? Tell us; we can all think of a solution together.”

“It’s nothing, brother. You’re overthinking it.”

Gern waved his hand with a smile, assuring them he was perfectly fine.

“Well then, if you say so. Since you have received the Divine King’s blessing, you are an eternal friend of our Olga Kingdom. Feel free to speak boldly about anything; we will support you with all our might.”

“Yes, alright.”

Gern readily agreed, and as he looked at the Olga squad’s valiant members, a warmth bloomed in his heart.

‘Their camaraderie truly is wonderful…’

He mused with genuine emotion.
