Chapter 146: The Chaos Godchild’s Core

‘Chaos Crystal?!’

Gern’s eyes widened. “Lilia, where did you find this?”

“Right where you first saw that monster,” she replied. “I took a quick look and found this.”

Gern stared at the fragment, his eyes wide. It was undeniably a piece of a Chaos Crystal, yet he was certain he hadn’t seen one earlier.

‘Wait!’

‘There’s another possibility…’

“Lilia, this thing… it couldn’t have fallen from that monster, could it?”

“Yes, it must be,” Lilia confirmed. “I saw this and a pile of black blood there. Its corruption is incredibly potent; my Holy Light nearly vanished the first time I touched it.”

Hearing Lilia’s explanation, Gern finally confirmed the outlandish thought that had been stirring within him.

Chaos Crystals were the very core of the Chaos Land, and their mission was to seek out this source of corruption.

When a Chaos Crystal fused with a human or another creature, a so-called Chaos Godchild was born.

This meant the monster that had just attacked them was, in fact, the Chaos Godchild of this small world.

Gern had initially dismissed his idea as unrealistic because he knew Chaos Godchildren too well.

Which Chaos Godchild would ever engage in tactics? They typically charged head-on, for these creatures possessed no true intellect and were incapable of complex thought.

Thus, when Gern first observed the monster’s cautious, self-preserving behavior, he hadn’t considered it a Chaos Godchild.

Now that he had confirmed this creature was a Chaos Godchild, the situation suddenly became much simpler.

A faint smile finally touched Gern’s lips, and the heavy burden on his heart lifted.

Recalling the secret art used to control Chaos Godchildren, he began to form hand seals, muttering incantations under his breath.

Lilia, observing Gern’s strange demeanor, curiously waved a hand before his eyes.

“What’s gotten into you?”

“Don’t disturb me,” Gern replied firmly. “I have a way to deal with this fellow.”

Lilia’s expression darkened. ‘Since when did he become so assertive?’

‘Hmph, just you wait until we get back.’

She grumbled softly in her mind but said nothing further aloud.

In the distance, the Chaos Godchild, which had been rampaging through the crowd, seemed to sense something.

It turned its attention towards Gern.

“ROAR!”

With a furious bellow, the monster dropped the corpse it held and charged directly at Gern.

The others saw its actions, but it was already too late to intervene. The monster’s speed was simply astonishing.

As the creature rapidly closed the distance, beads of sweat began to form on Gern’s forehead.

“Go!”

Just as the monster’s claw was about to strike Gern, a ball of light plunged into its body.

The charging monster abruptly froze, standing perfectly still.

It stood there, motionless, like a lifeless puppet.

Seeing this, Gern let out a small sigh of relief. Despite the Heretic God Cult’s sinister deeds, their secret arts were undeniably reliable.

Upon witnessing this sight, the others immediately erupted in cheers.

The immense stone that had weighed heavily on everyone’s hearts had finally been lifted.

Gern wiped the cold sweat from his forehead, just about to catch his breath, when a sharp pain shot through his head.

The monster’s consciousness was actively resisting his control.

This discovery profoundly shocked Gern.

The monster’s mental assault was exceptionally fierce. Gern clutched his head, struggling to suppress its relentless advance.

It was at this moment that fragmented memories began to flood into his mind.

These were its memories from after it had transformed into a Chaos Godchild.

The contents were extremely scattered and lacked any coherence, yet Gern could ascertain one thing: this monster must have existed for a very long time.

Gradually, the vast, fragmented memories threatened to overwhelm Gern’s entire mind.

He felt himself nearing his breaking point.

Even with the experience of two lifetimes, he could not withstand the monster’s torrent of memories.

If he failed to take immediate action, this immense sea of memories would surely turn him into an imbecile.

“Gern, what’s wrong?”

Lilia frowned, sensing that their ordeal was far from over.

“Don’t… don’t come closer!” Gern struggled to say, one hand clutching his head while the other reached toward the monster’s chest. “I might lose control of it. Everyone, stay alert!”

‘It’s not here…’

He forcefully maintained his will, searching the monster’s body for the Chaos Crystal.

Suddenly, he recalled striking its tail earlier.

Gern reached for its tail, and as if sensing his intent, the monster resisted with even greater ferocity.

Caught off guard, Gern stumbled, nearly losing his footing.

Fortunately, Lilia was nearby, preventing him from falling completely.

Gern endured the intense pain and memory onslaught in his mind, seizing the monster’s dark, scaly tail.

The next moment, a bizarre sight unfolded: Gern’s palm passed directly through the monster’s body, reaching for the Chaos Crystal within.

The instant Gern’s hand made contact with the Chaos Crystal, an incredibly potent surge of Chaos power flooded into his body.

Gern gritted his teeth, exerting every ounce of his strength to extract the crystal.

As the Chaos Crystal shifted, it began to emit a dazzling violet glow.

Immediately afterward, the monster’s body began to rapidly wither. The Chaos Crystal was the very core of the Chaos Godchild.

Once removed, the creature before them would be nothing more than a large, inert monster.

Knowing the fate that awaited it, the monster struggled desperately, its large hands flailing, attempting to swat Gern away.

It let out a furious roar.

“Stop!”

The monster’s hands instantly froze, unable to move even an inch.

Everyone watched the scene unfolding before them, no one daring to speak. They knew there was nothing they could do to help, only wait in silence.

One minute passed. Two minutes.

Then three… A full ten minutes elapsed, yet Gern still hadn’t managed to extract the Chaos Crystal.

Consequently, the Chaos power continued to surge into his body. The delicate balance of the three forces within him was once again shattered, and Gern’s hand began to blacken.

Gradually, a tendril of black energy crept up his hand, a trend that became increasingly pronounced.

Before long, Gern’s entire left forearm had turned an ominous, glossy black.

There was no pain, no discomfort, as if this was its natural state.

Gern took a deep breath, and the strength in his grip intensified once more.

“Gern!”

Lilia stood anxiously nearby, wanting to step forward and help, but Gern’s other hand stopped her.

“Lilia, don’t come closer,” he warned. “Only I can handle this.”

“Gern, stop spouting nonsense!” Lilia retorted. “This is no time for heroics.”

With that, Lilia disregarded his words, grabbing Gern’s arm and pulling with him.

Gern opened his mouth, intending to tell Lilia to let go, but the words died on his tongue, replaced by a sigh.

‘Fine, let her pull if she wants,’ he thought. ‘The Chaos power won’t fully corrupt my body just yet.’

‘Lilia should be safe touching it for now…’

Gern mused inwardly.
