Chapter 121: The Price of Loss and a Glimmer of Hope

Lilia rushed to Gern’s side, her gaze falling upon Gern’s torn heart. In disbelief, she pulled out the pendant from Gern’s chest, tears streaming down her face.

Even though she struggled to accept it, this person before her was indeed the Gern she had been desperately searching for all this time.

Though Lilia couldn’t comprehend why Gern had transformed in such a way, the familiar pendant and the unwavering look in Gern’s eyes remained, unmistakably hers.

In that fleeting moment, Gern’s fading consciousness still registered Lilia’s tear-streaked face. Her heart, or what was left of it, constricted sharply.

‘No, I have no heart now,’ Gern thought, yet she felt an overwhelming sense that Lilia, in this moment, was exceptionally ‘beautiful.’ She yearned to surrender everything she possessed to her.

Her lips parted, but no words escaped. Gern’s gray-white eyes slowly dimmed, and her life ebbed away.

“Gern!”

Lilia’s piercing shriek echoed through the heavens, audible throughout the entire manor.

Aivia, arriving just a step too late, witnessed the scene unfold before her. Her own heart clenched in response.

The tantalizing scent of blood beckoned, an instinctive urge to taste it. Aivia, however, resisted this primal call, redirecting her gaze towards the woman who lay sprawled, her face having met the door.

“That’s my blood s*ave! What have you done to her!”

Aivia’s fury was palpable, a blood-red scythe materializing in her hand.

Upon seeing the two women, Evelyn sneered contemptuously.

“You two… you know her?”

“Enough talk! Die!”

Truly enraged, Aivia launched a deadly assault. Countless streaks of blood-red light shot skyward, then fractured into a myriad of fine crimson threads, all hurtling towards Evelyn’s vital points.

Evelyn, rising with difficulty, betrayed no emotion. With a mere wave of her hand, the approaching blood-red light was intercepted by an invisible surge of fighting spirit.

“Hmph, a mere third-rank knight dares to cause trouble here!”

Evelyn’s eyes blazed, and a potent aura instantly sent Aivia flying. Fortunately, her wings provided a cushion, allowing her to quickly stabilize herself mid-air.

Aivia’s brow beaded with sweat. This opponent was clearly beyond her capabilities.

Lilia remained lost in a daze on the ground, as if her soul had departed with Gern’s.

“Lilia! How long will you stare blankly? Avenge Gern!”

Lilia’s body jolted, her soul finally returning to her. She looked up at Evelyn, her face contorted with rage.

“I demand your life for hers!”

Lilia slowly rose, her body engulfed in such vibrant flames that even Aivia flinched in surprise.

Seeing Lilia’s renewed resolve, Aivia moved to stand beside her.

These two, once sworn enemies, had forged a temporary alliance. Though facing a fifth-rank opponent together was challenging, it was not an impossible fight.

Just as they prepared to attack, footsteps suddenly echoed from the doorway.

Aivia, still seething with anger, swiftly regained her composure. She turned to see a group of soldiers rushing towards them.

Things were looking grim. They were already at a disadvantage against Evelyn, and now with so many additional enemies, they might very well perish here.

“Lilia, we can’t stay here. Let’s go.”

“I want her to pay for Gern’s life!”

Aivia frowned. Lilia’s stubbornness made things difficult, but as more people gathered, she had no choice but to pull Lilia away.

“Lilia, we are no match for her right now. We need to leave and strategize! Don’t you want to avenge Gern?”

At Aivia’s words, Lilia finally regained some clarity. She looked at Gern’s body lying on the ground, her lips pressed into a thin line.

“Take her with us.”

She couldn’t abandon Gern’s body here; even in death, Gern belonged to her.

“Alright!”

Aivia didn’t argue, but before she could act, Lilia had already hoisted Gern onto her back.

Aivia felt a pang of guilt. She glanced around, noticing a storage ring resting silently on a nearby table.

“You… you won’t!”

Evelyn attempted to block their escape, but before she could move, Lilia turned, unleashing a fiery phoenix that completely sealed Evelyn’s path of approach.

Lilia’s flames were incredibly potent. Evelyn sensed the terrifying power within them and, for a moment, dared not underestimate them, cautiously probing the fiery barrier.

By the time she finally broke free from the wall of fire, the two women had vanished without a trace.

“Damn it!”

Evelyn cursed under her breath, wanting to pursue them but finding no sign of their whereabouts.

Outside the Serpent race’s capital city, two figures fled at breakneck speed towards the surrounding mountains.

Along the way, Lilia ran, tears flowing freely as if they cost nothing.

Deep within her sapphire-like eyes, boundless rage and resentment simmered.

Though her vision blurred with tears, her speed never wavered.

“Lilia, Lilia…”

Aivia, close behind, periodically glanced back to check for pursuers. Seeing no one, she called out again.

But Lilia seemed not to hear, pushing forward relentlessly.

“Lilia!”

Lilia irritably turned her head, her eyes blazing with an anger that threatened to erupt.

“Shut up! If it weren’t for you, how could Gern have ended up like this?”

“I…”

Aivia tried to retort, but the words caught in her throat. She couldn’t utter a single one.

She lowered her head in shame, her eyes rimmed with red.

“I’m… I’m sorry.”

Aivia finally relented to Lilia, a moment that should have brought joy, but Lilia felt no happiness at all.

She wanted to shout curses at Aivia, yet when she opened her mouth, only a sob escaped.

Lilia struggled to compose herself, but the more she tried, the greater the surge of grievance within her.

She first remembered Gern’s sudden departure, then the myriad hardships and dangers she had faced while tracking Gern’s whereabouts.

She had anticipated completing the academy’s mission and returning with Gern, never imagining such a tragedy would strike.

‘Gern… Little Luoya, I was too late, too late…’

Lilia gently laid Gern’s body on the ground and knelt beside her, her emotions completely shattered.

Aivia stood silently beside her. She discreetly bent down, sniffing the dried blood.

Though it was utterly inappropriate at the moment, she found herself yearning to bite into Gern’s wound.

Just as Aivia leaned in, intending to quickly drink some of Gern’s warm blood, a golden light burst forth.

‘Hm?!’

The golden light emanated from Gern’s body, illuminating the area with dazzling brilliance.

For a moment, Aivia was thoroughly startled by the spectacle. Believing her actions had angered something, she instinctively recoiled.

Lilia’s expression froze, and she forgot her tears, staring blankly at the intense light erupting from Gern.

Cough… cough…

The light enveloped every part of Gern’s body, and beneath its glow, Gern’s form gradually began to change.

As the golden light receded, a silver-haired girl lay there, life having returned to her.

“Gern!”

Lilia’s eyes widened to their fullest. The sudden, overwhelming joy made her forget to question Gern’s condition; she simply embraced her, bursting into tears.

“Cough, Lil… Lilia, I… I can’t breathe.”
