Join the ServerThe journey pressed onward. Along the path, newly transformed Chaos creatures continuously emerged.
These monstrosities could be anything: reanimated corpses, tiny animals burrowed beneath the sand, or even the very plants that clung to life in the vast desert.
The relentless assaults from these grotesque beings began to wear down everyone’s spirits, leaving them utterly drained.
Yet, despite such a perilous environment, their ability to maintain their combat effectiveness spoke volumes about the sheer strength of their small team.
As the group navigated past the desolate ruins of an ancient battlefield, a sight that made their blood run cold instantly greeted them.
Just ahead, a terrifying panorama unfolded: an immense, dense mass of grotesquely twisted monsters. They formed a dark, oppressive expanse, resembling a vast, ominous shadow cast across the heavens.
These creatures directly obstructed their path forward, plunging the morale of the entire group into the depths of despair.
Rex raised a clenched fist, a silent command for the entire team to halt their advance.
“How much ammunition do we have left?”
Rex turned to Count, the team’s machine gunner. Count, in turn, cast a quick glance at the ten rings adorning his fingers before responding.
“Captain, we still have two storage rings filled with Holy Light bullets. That should be sufficient to eliminate these creatures.”
Upon hearing this, Rex’s brow furrowed even deeper in concern.
As the team leader, he possessed a profound understanding of the devastation Chaos power inflicted upon the world. The monstrous horde before them represented merely the tip of an iceberg, a fraction of the contaminated land.
“We’ll circle around them,” he stated, his voice low. “Do not alert them.”
“Understood, Captain!”
Every team member raised their firearm, their dark muzzles unwavering from the monstrous horde. Each nerve in their bodies was stretched taut, pushed to its absolute limit.
“Slower,” Rex murmured, his voice barely a whisper. “Even slower…”
Rex took the lead, positioning himself at the very front to guide the entire squad.
The distant Chaos creatures remained oblivious to their presence, merely roaming within their designated area. However, Rex observed a disturbing trend: they were slowly beginning to spread outwards.
Witnessing this, Rex’s expression darkened considerably. These creatures wouldn’t have congregated there without cause. The only plausible explanation was that they were spreading outwards from the secret realm’s entrance.
The realization sent a chilling dread through Rex, his spirits plummeting instantly.
He clung to a desperate shred of hope, circling widely in a futile attempt to deny the terrifying conclusion forming in his mind.
Yet, the deeper they ventured, the denser the concentration of monsters became. The grim reality confirmed his worst fears.
Observing this horrifying spectacle, the squad members grew increasingly uneasy. Nevertheless, their ingrained soldier’s discipline prevented any spoken discussion at such a critical juncture.
Instead, they communicated through silent glances, each gaze reflecting a shared mixture of shock and profound fear.
Rex had no choice but to command a full halt. He needed to reassess their situation and re-devise their operational plan.
“You’ve all witnessed the situation here,” Rex began, his voice firm. “I understand the apprehension and unease stirring within you.”
“However, the dangers of Chaos power are something we, of the Olga Kingdom, understand better than anyone. I’m giving you ten seconds to compose yourselves.”
At Rex’s command, the team members remained silent. The various negative emotions that had clouded their faces slowly, but surely, receded under a disciplined will.
“Good,” Rex declared, his gaze sweeping over them. “It appears you’ve all regained your composure. Now, I shall assign your individual tasks.”
“Nosa, you will lead the reconnaissance team. Maintain vigilance for any Chaos creatures that might assault us from the flanks.”
“Understood, Captain.”
“Black, you are responsible for securing our rear.”
“Alright, mate.”
“Count, when the time comes, take your light machine gun and blast a bloody path through them for us.”
“Understood, Captain.”
With each assignment distributed, Rex gave the signal, and the squad resumed their advance.
This time, there would be no more circling. They moved with the precision of a sharpened blade, poised to plunge directly into the oppressive mass of Chaos creatures ahead.
Rex had initially intended to approach the Chaos creatures stealthily before launching a surprise assault. However, to their dismay, they hadn’t even reached the designated combat zone before some of the creatures detected their presence.
“Roar!”
“Howl!”
A cacophony of grotesque roars and howls instantly ripped through the air, shattering the eerie silence. The previously desolate Chaos Land suddenly erupted into a furious maelstrom of activity.
The monsters’ cries seemed to flip a switch, as the surrounding darkness began to writhe and churn. Waves of Chaos power relentlessly slammed against the protective shields of the team.
The Holy Light protecting them flickered erratically, waxing and waning, casting a pall of dread over everyone’s hearts.
Could their meager Holy Light truly withstand such terrifying, overwhelming Chaos power?
No one would provide them an answer, for the battle had already begun in earnest.
*Crackling sounds echoed.*
Wielding his heavy firepower, Count swiftly set up his light machine gun, unleashing a scorching barrage of bullets.
The faintly glowing bullets struck a Chaos creature with precision. Yet, these particular Chaos creatures were clearly far more resilient than those encountered on the outskirts. Even the Holy Light bullets, designed for such foes, failed to deliver a fatal blow.
This was a grave problem. Their only means of inflicting damage upon the Chaos creatures were these specialized Holy Light bullets and a few select items.
Should their ammunition be depleted, their only recourse would be to engage these monsters in brutal close-quarters combat.
However, a squad lacking even third-tier combat capabilities engaging such a horde in melee was tantamount to a death sentence.
With no other viable option, Rex steeled himself and charged, leading the vanguard.
The rifle clutched in his hands already began to emit faint wisps of smoke from its rapid firing.
He cycled through magazine after magazine, yet the tide of Chaos creatures seemed only to swell, not recede.
Then, a far more ominous report arrived: Chaos creatures had been sighted on both their flanks and to their rear, steadily converging to encircle them.
“Damn it!”
Rex cursed under his breath, then took a quick step back. In the brief moment he swapped magazines, he let out a thunderous roar.
“Bulgar!”
“Understood!”
A similarly desperate cry tore through the air, followed by the sight of a massive cannonball slamming directly into the horde of Chaos creatures ahead.
*A resounding crackle and pop filled the air.*
The power of Holy Light instantly surged forth, erupting into a dazzling brilliance that engulfed the creatures. For a moment, no Chaos creatures emerged from the blinding light, offering Rex a fleeting sense of relief.
Beside him, Count ceased his relentless firing. The barrel of his light machine gun, once a dull black, now glowed with an ominous, faint red hue from the intense heat.
Just as he reached to swap out the overheated barrel, a piercing, guttural shriek pierced the din of battle.
*A sickening squelch.*
Count’s head was violently severed, sent spiraling high into the air. From that dizzying height, he witnessed his own body slowly collapsing, and the desperate struggle of his teammates below.
Darkness swiftly consumed his vision. He tried to utter a final word, but the encroaching shadows utterly enveloped him. His severed head, completely tainted by Chaos power, warped beyond all recognition.
Then, a pair of crimson eyes slowly slit open within the grotesque mass. Innumerable tentacles erupted from what was once Count’s head, lashing out violently towards his former comrades.
Witnessing this horrific transformation, Rex’s eyes widened in stunned horror. He instinctively glanced skyward, where a bizarre, entirely black, monstrous bird hovered ominously.
It was this very creature that had descended from above, striking Count with such brutal efficiency.
