Chapter 139: Echoes of a Thousand Years

Lilia pondered this, yet the spear never struck. Turning her head once more, she witnessed a scene that utterly astonished her.

A radiant light was visibly mending Gern’s body, leaving her utterly dumbfounded. She scoured her memories, finding no power capable of such a feat save for a miracle from the Holy Light Goddess.

Yet, Lilia was certain the energy emanating from Gern was not of the Holy Light.

“Gern!” Lilia called out softly, a tentative whisper. Gern’s body stirred a few times in response.

Deep within Gern’s consciousness, a translucent figure radiated a sacred glow. The figure slowly turned, gazing at Gern with a faint smile.

“It’s been a while, little one reborn.” This, of course, was Kaled, the Divine King from his previous dream.

“You…” Gern began, but Kaled silenced him with a gesture.

“Shh, don’t speak yet. Let me guess, you’re currently within the Chaos Land, aren’t you?” Gern nodded obediently. Kaled closed his eyes, sensing carefully, then sighed faintly. “So it’s General Bape. I never expected his remnants to still be holding this place.”

“Hmm?” Gern was utterly bewildered, unable to grasp Kaled’s words.

Kaled, naturally aware of Gern’s confusion, approached him. He extended a hand and touched Gern’s forehead, immediately triggering a flood of memories from a thousand years ago.

The individual they had just fought was none other than General Bape, the Imperial Guard Commander of the Olga Kingdom, a core member of their royal court.

At that time, Kaled had ordered General Bape to defend Kaox, with strict instructions to hold out for five months. This was to buy the Olga Kingdom time to mobilize its entire populace.

General Bape, accompanied by the Imperial Guard who had always served Kaled, journeyed to this ancient city.

The ancient city had once been a towering metropolis, its outer walls reaching into the clouds. Gern was utterly speechless, shocked by the sight of the skyscrapers in the vision.

What chilled him even more was the realization that this magnificent fortress, now a ruin within the secret realm, had ultimately fallen to Chaos creatures.

The mental images concluded there, for Kaled himself had no knowledge of what transpired afterward.

Back then, Chaos power had erupted from various regions of the Olga Kingdom. Kaled simply had no time to attend to this particular area.

With their forces severely limited, many core members of the Olga Kingdom were scattered, fighting fires on all fronts.

However, the invasion of Chaos power was horrifyingly relentless. It was as if the world’s will had detected its presence; for every core of Chaos power they eradicated, another would emerge.

Consequently, the entire Olga Kingdom was engulfed in conflict, eventually succumbing entirely to the Chaos power.

Gradually, all the images faded into darkness. Kaled once again stood before Gern.

“My power is limited,” Kaled explained. “I can only give you a general overview of the situation back then.”

“The martial art General Bape employed, the Leaping Dragon Spear, was one I personally created in my early years,” Kaled continued. “Its power is incredibly potent. Even with the Kindling’s augmentation, this body of yours won’t be able to continue functioning for long.”

Abruptly, Kaled’s tone shifted. “I can sustain your life force and deal with the internal energy that has invaded your body. The rest, however, will be up to you.”

As he spoke, Kaled’s form gradually dissipated, fully transforming into an external avatar for Gern. A stream of light enveloped Gern’s entire body.

Gern felt a warm current course through him, and the agonizing, tearing pain throughout his body slowly receded.

He finally opened his eyes, meeting Lilia’s anxious gaze.

“Lilia, I’m back,” Gern whispered.

“Gern, don’t speak,” Lilia urged.

Lilia’s eyes were red-rimmed. She swiftly pulled out a healing scroll and placed it over Gern’s wounds.

In mere moments, he had recovered completely. A faint ache lingered at the site of the wounds, but it was well within Gern’s tolerance.

His internal injuries, however, were quite severe, meaning he would need to find some minor monsters to slay later to fully recuperate.

As the light around him faded, all the residual internal energy within Gern was transformed, fully integrating into his body.

The sudden surge of battle qi loosened his Knight realm. He suppressed the urge to break through immediately, instead slowly rising to his feet and looking forward.

There, the massive black knight remained, frozen in the posture of thrusting its spear, as if time had stopped for its entire body.

Gern looked at Lilia, a question forming in his eyes, intending to ask what had happened. However, Kaled’s voice suddenly resonated in his ear.

“His soul hasn’t been completely corrupted yet. Help him.”

Gern’s expression stiffened at the instruction, a flicker of doubt in his eyes. The knight was completely consumed by Chaos.

From Gern’s perspective, even if a sliver of consciousness remained, there was no point in saving him. He was no stranger to Chaos power; in his previous life, he had dealt with it for almost an eternity. In this state, even if ‘saved,’ the knight would never be his former self.

“Hurry!” Kaled’s voice was urgent.

“Just touch him. Your old man… no, *I* will figure out the method!”

Gern’s mouth twitched. Despite his lingering doubts, he decided to trust Kaled just this once.

Gern extended his hand, gently touching General Bape’s armor. Dazzling white light gathered at his fingertips, slowly transferring to General Bape’s form.

The black miasma gradually receded, replaced by battered armor gleaming with a silvery sheen.

The face, previously obscured by black energy, slowly revealed itself. It belonged to a middle-aged man, whose appearance did not match the knight depicted standing behind Kaled in the murals.

Though the Chaos power had been temporarily dispelled from him, his eyes held no human emotion. Only a profound stillness remained.

“Lord Kaled?! Lord Kaled, all Imperial Guardsmen… did not retreat.”

“Kaox still stands, we still stand… Lord… the Imperial Guard has fully… completed… its mission…”

As the general’s final words fell, his spear clattered to the ground. He himself sank to one knee, on the verge of fading away.

Suddenly, the light in Gern’s hand intensified, holding the teetering General Bape in place.

In a daze, Gern seemed to glimpse a shadow whispering into General Bape’s ear. The general’s chaotic eyes abruptly sparked with a glimmer of clarity, and as if in a final, dying surge, he spoke.

“The Kindling… is in the east of the city, the Chaos Crystal… is… is far away…”

Before he could finish, his entire body collapsed with a thud. His final obsession had vanished.

A swirl of black energy rose, and General Bape’s body dissolved into a wisp of dark mist, utterly vanishing. Where he had fallen, a longsword, corroded by Chaos power, remained.
