“The world… belongs to Chaos…”
Gern’s face began to contort, his mind reeling from a tremendous impact. He could no longer discern illusion from reality.
His eyes were now entirely shrouded in black energy, crimson light erupting from their depths. Whispers echoed ceaselessly in his ears, attempting to merge completely with Gern.
Yet, for reasons unknown, the source of these whispers failed to fully succeed, managing only to drag Gern’s soul into the black mist.
Concurrently, in the external world, Gern’s body became fully enveloped in Chaos power. His strength surged, steadily stabilizing at the level of a Sixth-rank Knight.
The creature riding Gern tilted its head in confusion at this sight. The next instant, its head exploded.
Shrouded in black energy, Gern swayed as he rose. His crimson eyes gleamed with a mix of mockery and madness.
His current demeanor bore a striking resemblance to a certain individual in a fit of rage.
The wounds on his body rapidly healed. In no time, the injuries left by the monster vanished without a trace.
The squad members, still unaware of Gern’s true state, remained vigilant of their surroundings, positioning Lilia safely at their center.
Within the mist, a dark figure materialized. The dim light obscured its identity, pushing everyone’s guard to its absolute peak.
“Fire!”
At Rex’s command, everyone unleashed a concentrated volley of attacks towards Gern.
Due to the poor light and his body being completely covered in black energy, no one realized this monster was Gern.
Of course, some among them sensed something amiss, feeling that the creature seemed off in an undefinable way, but they gave it no further thought.
Holy Light bullets, imbued with immense power, struck Gern’s form, yet failed to even breach the black energy surrounding him.
Gern’s crimson eyes turned towards them. He opened his mouth in a furious roar that ripped through the air in all directions.
The sound rattled the squad, almost causing them to drop their weapons.
They had expected the monster to attack them in that moment.
Instead, the creature began to pound its own head, as if in immense pain, causing everyone present to halt their gaze.
“What’s happening?”
Black asked, perplexed, his weapon still aimed at the distant monster.
Rex was equally bewildered, his confusion no less than Black’s.
Moreover, he felt that this monster’s appearance had changed, stirring an inexplicable sense of familiarity within him.
“Everyone, stay alert. Let’s observe for now.”
“Yes.”
A deathly silence descended upon the area. No one dared to disturb Gern as he struggled in the distance.
“Roar…!”
Unnatural, inhuman roars continuously echoed. Three points of light flickered within Gern’s body—the Kindling power of three distinct races.
He struggled, he roared, and then he charged towards the squad.
“Scatter! Quickly, scatter!”
Having learned from their previous encounter with the monster, Rex ordered his squad members to split into several smaller groups.
It was at this moment that Lilia clearly saw the figure rushing towards them.
“Gern!?”
Her startled cry silenced the entire area.
She trembled, staring ahead, scarcely believing her own eyes.
‘This creature’s build and stature are undeniably Gern’s. Even if Gern were reduced to ash, she would recognize him.’
‘But why had things come to this?’
As Lilia pondered, the monster that was Gern charged into the squad.
Whether intentional or not, Gern’s attacks did not land on Lilia but instead struck down the teammates beside her.
Lilia felt no fear. Her eyes, filled with stubborn defiance, fixed on Gern.
“Gern! Don’t you recognize us?”
Gern’s movements halted. The several points of light in his dantian grew increasingly brilliant.
He began to strike his own head, emitting sounds of profound agony.
Seeing that her call had an effect, Lilia’s eyes brightened slightly.
“Quick! Gern is reacting; his consciousness hasn’t been completely corrupted yet.”
At Lilia’s urging, the others snapped to attention. They cautiously approached Gern and, finding that he truly wasn’t attacking them, finally believed Lilia’s words.
“Brother Gern, wake up! It’s Rex!”
“Gern, it’s Black…”
“Gern…”
Their calls had some effect, but Gern showed no signs of improvement.
In fact, his reactions to their voices grew weaker, causing Lilia immense anxiety.
“Gern, hold on! I’ll definitely find a way.”
Tears welled in her eyes as she racked her brain, trying to recall anything that could help Gern.
‘Chaos power invading the body is essentially akin to the primary method of control used by Heretic God contamination: an attack on a person’s spirit.’
With this realization, Lilia’s eyes suddenly lit up. She did indeed know a secret art related to the spirit.
It was the soul contract she had so diligently sought within the academy.
This required mutual consent to establish a bridge between souls.
Those who signed the contract could communicate telepathically, know everything about each other, and even combine their strengths.
This combination wasn’t as simple as a Fourth-rank adding to a Fifth-rank; rather, it meant sharing a single health bar and mana pool, while also augmenting the power of both parties to a certain extent.
However, one crucial point to note was that Heretic God contamination could also be transmitted through the contract.
This meant that if Lilia were to sign a contract with Gern in his current state, she too would risk being assimilated by the Heretic God.
‘No matter. Gern, wait for me. Just a moment.’
Without a hint of hesitation, Lilia immediately recalled the contents she had previously seen.
Her hands began to form seals, and soon, a surge of power, the very essence of the contract, gathered at her fingertips.
The challenge now was how to make Gern willingly sign the soul contract.
Lilia mused that a forced soul contract would require her cultivation realm to be stronger than Gern’s, thereby negating the need for his consent.
However, Gern, having received a dual boost from Sherry and the Chaos Crystal, now possessed strength far exceeding hers.
Thus, only an equal soul contract remained as an option…
Lilia took a deep breath, and the white light at her fingertips, guided by her will, flew towards Gern’s glabella. The white light then completely vanished into his body.
Gern, who had been struggling moments before, suddenly froze, rigid in place.
Immediately, Lilia felt an agonizing throbbing in her brain; something was attempting to attack the soul contract.
She gritted her teeth, forcefully maintaining the contract’s existence. This was her sole hope of saving Gern, and she could not afford to fail now.
