Join the ServerLed by Mina, the group arrived at one of the city’s most bustling streets.
Despite its reputation for prosperity, the street saw few pedestrians. The entire city remained shrouded in the shadow of war, and bitter sorrow was etched upon the faces of those who passed by.
Upon reaching the lodging Mina had arranged, Gern finally released a long, slow breath. The tension that had gripped his nerves for days instantly dissipated.
He felt an overwhelming mental fatigue, his body utterly drained and devoid of strength.
He collapsed onto the soft bed, gazing up at the pristine white ceiling, lost in a daze.
His mind was a maelstrom of thoughts: General Bape, Sherry, and even that peculiar clown nose that had appeared at the end.
Gern sensed that the situation was spiraling into deeper chaos, and a faint suspicion grew within him that these deities might be engaged in a grand, intricate game.
Yet, the more he pondered these complex matters, the more exhausted his mind became.
‘Perhaps I should rest first,’ he thought.
Gern closed his eyes slowly, his heart heavy with weariness. The room Mina had prepared for him was secluded and remarkably quiet.
Whether by her design or for some other reason, her room and Lilia’s were situated far apart.
‘This is for the best,’ he mused, ‘less disturbance from Lilia.’

Suddenly, Lilia’s slightly displeased voice echoed in his mind.
Gern was startled by the unexpected sound, feeling as if Lilia were whispering right beside his ear.
“Lilia, you—”
“Alright, just focus on recovering. Mina will arrange for someone to examine us shortly. You should rest for now; I’ll call you when it’s time.”
Gern’s heart warmed at her words, and just as he was about to express his gratitude, Lilia continued.
“Hmm, I think I heard someone’s heart beating quite rapidly, you know.”
The faint stir of emotion Gern had felt instantly vanished, replaced by a predicament that made him want to laugh and cry simultaneously. Lilia pressed on.
Instead, he was overcome by the awkwardness of having his thoughts exposed and a hint of indignant frustration.
“Who… who’s heart was racing? I… I was injured!”
He retorted, yet his innermost thoughts had already betrayed his true feelings.
“Oh, yes, our Gern is just injured, aren’t they~”
Lilia’s voice, laced with amusement, resonated in his mind, her tone brimming with teasing.
Faintly, Gern also seemed to perceive Lilia’s current emotions from the other end of their contract.
‘Hmm… how should I describe it? It feels very warm, very sweet, and it’s directed at me…’ he thought.
Gern shivered violently. ‘This feeling must be love. It must be.’
Recalling fragmented scenes from his previous life, particularly Lilia’s interactions with Mina, sent a chill down his spine.
On the other end, Lilia, who had been about to check on the situation, suddenly felt Gern’s surging emotions.
Lilia frowned, closing her eyes as she delved into the depths of her consciousness.
There, she saw herself engaging in some… very strange actions with Miss Mina.
“What are these images?”
“Ah?!”
‘Oh no!’ Gern realized, horrified. He had forgotten that his soul was linked to Lilia’s; any thought in his mind would instantly be known to her.
“Ugh… I’m doomed, completely doomed…”
Gern desperately tried to calm himself, silently cursing the damned soul contract while attempting to divert his attention with other thoughts.
However, the more he tried, the more those images flooded his mind, utterly beyond his control.
Flashes of images kept appearing before Lilia’s eyes, depicting moments between her and Mina, as well as her past self relentlessly hunting Gern through a sea of blood and corpses.
Lilia’s confusion deepened as the memories replayed in Gern’s mind were mostly fragmented.
Based solely on these fragments, Lilia couldn’t discern much.
Thus, her consciousness delved deeper into the sea of consciousness, passing through the soul contract and entering Gern’s body.
Lilia waited for a while in Gern’s sea of consciousness. Gern felt something enter him, and before he could react, a wave of dizziness washed over him.
Lilia located the repository of memories in Gern’s mind and extended her hand to extract their contents.
She witnessed Gern’s past life, how he was tormented by the members of the Chaos Heretic Cult, and his eventual, reluctant induction into their ranks.
She then saw herself from that era, and because she was viewing Gern’s memories, she could empathize with what the past Gern had felt.
The scenes flashed rapidly before her eyes. Gradually, Lilia saw Gern’s true attitude and evaluation of her, her eyes slowly losing focus as she spoke with an ethereal voice.
“Gern, what… what are these memories?”
Gern’s mind buzzed, instantly becoming a blank.
‘It’s over! It’s completely over!’
Gern felt a profound despair. His greatest secret, the most crucial memories of his life, were slowly being unveiled by Lilia.
He tried to forcefully sever the accursed mental link, or at least block his thoughts.
But the soul contract was like the most tenacious thread, tightly binding their souls. The more he panicked, the clearer those images from his past life appeared before Lilia’s eyes.
Lilia stood rooted, her body swaying slightly. Her once vivid blue eyes were now unfocused, as if peering through the present reality into phantoms of another time.
She saw herself in intimate moments with Mina, then saw herself wielding a sharp blade, her eyes cold and crazed, relentlessly pursuing a desperate, fleeing Gern through mountains of corpses and seas of blood. The hatred and obsession were so intense they almost solidified into reality.
These scenes appeared incredibly real, stored within Gern’s memories.
“What… is this?”
Lilia’s voice was light and airy, carrying a hint of imperceptible tremor. “Gern, what exactly is all of this?”
“No… I… I don’t know.”
Gern curled up, and even though he couldn’t see Lilia’s current expression, he could feel an intense wave of emotion emanating from her.
‘She… she’s going to kill me.’
Gern felt his sanity beginning to fray. Despite his current strength far surpassing Lilia’s, a deep-seated fear, etched into his very instincts, prevented him from even contemplating resistance.
Lilia, sensing Gern’s emotions deep within herself, moved her body step by step, leaving the room.
She intended to confront Gern face-to-face, demanding an explanation for everything she had seen.
Gern felt every action Lilia took with chilling clarity.
Lilia was approaching him; she was coming to question him directly.
‘Haha… haha…’ Gern’s mind, under the intense emotional turmoil, was already fracturing. He stared blankly towards the doorway, where Lilia now stood, equally stunned, looking at him.
“Li… Lilia, you’re here. Haha.”
Gern’s expression was utterly broken. He huddled in the corner, his eyes warily fixed on Lilia.
Gern’s appearance was like a sharp sword, piercing Lilia’s heart.
As she slowly stepped forward, Gern recoiled further.
“Don’t… don’t come any closer, Lilia. I… I know I lied to you, deceived you for so long, and… and deep down, I never truly considered you a friend.”
“This… this is all my fault. Do with me as you please. Please… please be gentle; I’m afraid of pain.”
Gern whispered, knowing that whether he spoke or not, Lilia would already know his thoughts. His death was inevitable.
